What’s up man I just subbed
@user-xm8sq1mu1c yo, right on! More vids coming soon, took a short break revamping my setup a bit lately. Thanks for subbing!!
At the end of the video you said that for C-log3 (and other log footage) it would be better to change the tone mapping to none, which i did in the CST Out-node but it turned my otherwise correct looking footage into highly overexposed mess. Using the luminance mapping with custom max input looked fine to me. Any ideas why this could be and is it something I´m doing wrong?
Tone mapping may be better for you camera, what did you shoot with? With no tone mapping, try turning the highlights knob to -100, ( as far as it will go) and see how much more detail you have in the highlights vs tone mapping. This is the highlights knob in primaries, not log highlights nor gain. Also, mess with tone mapping level to find what looks best, most people max it out which is not always best, but usually works ok. With b raw footage tone mapping looks great - with clog3 sometimes tone mapping is ok but often sacrifices a ton of highlight detail. It really depends on the clip, too - bight clips may need tone mapping while darker shots might not.
@@Jeff_Lathrop Thanks for the anwser, I shot it with Canon R8
@EvylBeats i have a cannon r8, too. Its a great cam! Try the highlight adjustment, the one on the primaries that goes to -100, and see how it works.
Just subbed. What reference monitor are you using and what do you recommend in three levels of budget?
I like Dell u2723 QE and u3223 QE for budget, i also have a really cheap AOC 4k monitor that calibrates really well - almost any modern IPS panel will be good for SDR. The dells monitors have "hardware calibration" just like some of the LG monitors,, but it stores the profile in an ICC profile rather than the monitor, so it is very similar to the software that is included with any colorimeter. So - color management on the windows or mac side seems hugely more important than the monitor itself! I do not have experience with more expensive monitors, but EIZO and of course flanders seems pretty good. I don't think i would spend more than $1k for a monitor as a hobbyist, and I have been very pleased with my setup.
This looks so weird. What is the point or goal here?
Really just a first test with the film look creator node on some vibrant footage to see what happens. First half of the video is a vibrant grade and the 2nd half is just with film look creator slapped on top - very simple and fast comparison test. What looks weird about it to you?
I think the film look creator is great and it will only get better, I’ll soon be releasing some ready made presents for easy drag and drop!
It's already drag and drop!!
Yes, what I meant is that I’m developing a few nice presents as power grades so you can drag and drop and all settings are already tweaked from the get go or at least it gets you a bit closer depending your original footage.
@DavinciResolveTipsTricks that's great. Everyone should be making their own power grades and timeline presets, a huge time saver! I have a video on how to make custom thumbnails for powegrades, too - check it out!
what camera?

Hi brother i really liked ur video May i know the settings of ur CST in ?
@@KaranSingh-fl5ts check out my video on color management, and the one on saturation secrets has it also. What camera are you using?
@@Jeff_Lathrop yes i just found out amazing, i mostly use SonyFx3/Fx6 , on S Gamut Cine 3 and slog 3
@KaranSingh-fl5ts nice!! I'll do another video on CSTs soon, and I Will mention slog 3 along with some things I've learned about canon clog3 compared to braw.
@@Jeff_Lathrop great!! I also purchased micro panel, have u tried User button on it ? I dont know how to make that work, and can u share ur insta or any social media where we can talk more about it, i am also a video director/editor/colorist working from 8 years
@KaranSingh-fl5ts the user button is not functional yet, but hopefully will.be available for custom user set actions - hopefully once resolve 19 is out of beta. I do not use Instagram right now but I am on Facebook. The panel rocks!
loving the color grade! would you be able to make a tutorial for this?
@@AlbieJr_ yea, totally!!
What did you find good in this color grade? I am interesting in what details you pointed your attention because for me its a regular image with just greens shifted a bit to blues
Check out the breakdown here : th-cam.com/users/liveQ5LGAJMZp_A?si=AEp_aE5QYHUlNGzt
Nice video! I want to make one correction. The Color Space transform is included with the free version.
@KonaVisualzz oh great, thanks for the info! I thought it was studio only when I got my license last year, maybe not. Either way that is definitely good to know, and makes free resolve such an insane tool!
That's all cool!
Thanks bro, I think so too!
Well NICE!!!
Thanks! Looking back this is not very filmic, but I did use the film look creator tool to adjust the 2nd clip!
Thanks for the video. Can the panel edit curves? For example adding points and shifting the position?
I will have to double check on that. There is a cursor button that allows you to select a part of the image from the viewer with the right most trackball, which will create a point in the curves. I am not quite sure how to adjust the point or switch between the different curves - I do not think it full curve functionality, but I will have to follow up on that!
nice! thanks for the tips!!!
You bet!
Thank you for showing this! Very interesting! But Why do you place the 2nd CST on the 3rd group and not on the 4th? What is the difference between those?
The last button affects the entire timeline. When using groups, the 3rd button affects the entire group but not the timeline. With pre and post group clips levels you just get additional group controls before and after the clip level and before the timeline level. When using groups, you get 1: Group pre clip level - adjust entire group 2: Clip level - adjust selected clip only 3. Group post clip level - adjust entire group 4. Timeline level - adjust entire timeline. Hope this is helpful! Super handy when grouping scenes or different cameras. Say sony cameras are all 1 group and canon is another group, I can make adjustments to each group before adjusting everything at once with the timeline level. Your clips will need to be shot matched, and then groups might each have their on look once the clips are all matched at the clip level.
@@Jeff_Lathrop Excellent! I do understand now, thank you so very much! Looking forward to more videos from you!
@@RobertWildling Right on! I'll have a few more out this week!

@@NeelamTalkies108 thanks! Such a beautiful area :)
Resolve 19 was announced in April… We’re halfway through July and it’s still in beta? What is taking so long?
@2424rocket I've noticed it's a bit more resourde heavy and rendering slightly slower, maybe just taking extra time get it dialed in. Additional support for h.264 doesn't really seem faster so far, but who knows. I'm not sure if there is any official timeline either.
I'm a beginner to color grading but really want to become an export in the future. Is this panel worth for a newbie like me?
@KyleFilms it's definitely a luxury item. It is very fun to use and intuitive but not necessary at all. I love it and am keeping it, but just remember there are people color grading on laptops with a trackpad doing better results than some full on colorists!
@@Jeff_Lathrop thank you so much!
@@KyleFilms you bet! Are you working on any projects at the moment? How do you like grading so far?
@Jeff_Lathrop basic maximum 5 nodes, but I want to get better. I will get my hand on the new micro. I do use loupedeck for my editing, so I believe I will adapt fast with the panel.
@KyleFilms it is not the numbers of nodes used, but how they are used! 5 is plenty:) you'll love the panel.
They finally added FLAC
Resolve is really great, and the updates are legit!
