Just a couple of Brits on a journey to renovating our off grid home and yoga business in Portugal. Join us as we plan, build and restore our abandoned farm house, into our home and business in Portugal - while still living and working in the UK to fund our project!

We are Jamie and Candy. In July 2024, we purchased our beautiful stone farmhouse, which we later discovered is over 300 years old! The house has been home to generations of one family and was abandoned around 20 years ago.
Our plan is to continue living and working in the UK to fund this project. Once completed, we will have a stunning granite stone home with lots of history and charm. Alongside this, we plan to create a relaxing and peaceful retreat for our yoga and meditation guests to enjoy.
Yoga and meditation are Candy's passions, while running is Jamie's biggest hobby. Candy runs yoga classes and meditation sessions online and in person alongside her full-time job. Jamie organises a weekly running club, is the head chef at home, and works full-time too.

Yes are you right. Every bit of wood will need to be removed. No point risking a failure later on. Strip back to walls, repair walls and then build back up. Simple right? 😮 Lol. But definitely a lot of work as you say. Once the wood is out and you can inspect it properly you might be able to reclaim some and reuse it for various DIY projects like stable doors, shelves or work benches etc. Good Luck 🤞

You are a master of understatement. I saw the first version of the Trifids as an adolescent, came home from my friends and had to run across the road in the dark. Dad had cut down a tree fern in my absence, and propped it against a fence . Absolutely nightmare material.

Although Portugal is a very safe place, you might be better off making friends with a neighbour who would be willing to store your items for you. Just incase there is the unexpected flood or problem with parts of the building collapsing during times when you are not around.

Might be better hiding it in the ivy at this point. In England it would definitely go missing but in the middle of nowhere in Portugal hopefully it will be fine.

I Watch many Portuguese TH-camrs, your house is a great size. They are usualy small houses or barns that are converted. you have neighbours which is nice to have.
Just a tip. I would try not to wave your camera about x

Welcome to the climbing Everest/creative world of turning these old stone buildings into a lovely home. Just started work on my village house with various buildings and the only advice is don’t try to renovate without checking for termites and don’t be afraid to demolish. Smaller can be better. All the best.

Wow that is a massive amount of work needed, great long term project, how are you going live during the build? We have just come back from Portugal last week looking for a property, still in the early stages of planning.

Hi, thanks for the comment. So the Red Socks hat is from when I was traveling when I was younger. Spent a couple of weeks in Boston (& loved it). I watched the Bruins & Celtic’s (wrong time of the year for baseball). Follow them all now when I check on US sport. Like the Red Socks cap, its the second one I’ve owned as the first got worn out 😁

Congratulations. I bought a property with stone buildings in a village near Tondela 25 years ago. The permits for restoration take at least 6 months and without the legalities (visits from building inspectors, clear intentions of work to be done for council scrutiny, connection to services), you might fight an uphill battle. The key words are resilience and vision. But the Beira is a magnificent place and I wish you all the best on your journey.

Hi. we bought a ruin and land about 10 minutes from the village but higher up.. also need a new roof..probably go for sandwich panel...if its allowed by the camera...(we still commuting from South Africa..) good luck with your build ..looks great!

@@thispasithealife Yes, would be good..the local hardware store - on the corner down from the mini -preco is good for odds and sods..their son .Pedro speaks English..they also have a big builders yard further down on the way to the river. We have amazing neighbours ..can't wait to get back.. struggling to sell some property here in SA. I'm sure we will meet up some time.
What amenities, ie water, power, sewage, do you have access to? There appears to be no trees on the property, that i could see. I would want to get some started for shade. Was the building close to the house yours, also.
We are completely off grid, and intend to stay that way. We can connect to electricity if we need to, but will exhaust every option before having to do so ☺️

Probably because it’s horrible in there, it will take many frustrating years to repair this barn as well as dealing with the constant weeds.
