First take: LG LDPH5554S dishwasher
My 18-year old dishwasher broke in the spring. I waited for 2024 Black Friday sales to buy a new one. I read Consumer Reports, scoured online reviews and lurked in appliance stores all over the Tampa Bay area before settling on the LG LDPH5554S.
CAUTION: Similar looking models such as the LG LDTS5552S have different features and score lower in CR.
WHAT ABOUT BOSCH? Go into some stores and play with their rack system. It seems clunky for such a pricey machine. Also, their nerdtronics are disappointing. Bosch machines shine a light on the floor when they're running, but that's it. Most (all?) do not even have a "clean" indicator, much less an external "time remaining" display. The 500 series pops open the door for air drying, which is a hint. The 800 series uses volcanic rocks to capture heat during the wash cycle and re-emit it for drying (without a heating element). However, the LG LDPH5554S still scores 5 for drying in CR, whereas all the Bosch models score 4. Both score 4 for washing.
RETAILERS: Best Buy, Home Depot and Lowe's all had similar Black Friday deals. However, when I added delivery, installation, install kit and removal to my cart, BB won by about $100. Also, they had next day delivery & installation in my area.
BACKWASH PREVENTION: I bought a "dishwasher air gap" at Lowe's since it wasn't included in the kit. It's a drain hose loop with a little vent thingy protruding from a round hole at the back of your kitchen sink (which some people use for a dispenser instead). It prevents stuff from backing up into the dishwasher from the disposer, causing nasty odors. Predictably, the installers were clueless and said they could not install it since it requires an extra length of hose. So, I'll have a plumber do it. Here's the Lowe's link:
www.lowes.com/pl/plumbing-parts-repair/sink-parts-repair/air-gaps/dishwasher/4000658938-4174890601
COMPARISON SPREADSHEET: The spreadsheet below compares models I evaluated. The BF prices may be out of date by the time you read this:
docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Q6kWwD8tVI1XOxvzn8Mkb8BqZB4YMqsRYgSJ-8q8MlA/edit?usp=sharing
RUN TIME: It was 3 hours because it was set to the "Heavy" cycle. CR says the run time for "Auto" is 1:52, which roughly agrees with what I saw when I subsequently did an "Auto" load . The time probably varies based on the dirtiness of the water detected by the turbidity sensor.
APP: The LG ThinQ app is better than many consumer device apps which seem to be little more than an afterthought. Here's a screenshot:
photos.app.goo.gl/ReZPJXAfZeLoT3ZM9
I also use the same app with the LG washer/dryers in our building laundry room to check time remaining for my clothes. Since I'm on the HOA board, I set up the app for those machines too, "inviting" residents who have the LG app (including myself) to view devices owned by the building user I created. Thus, they can see their own devices in addition to any that they've been invited to.

Window treatments in DTSP condo
มุมมอง 2111 หลายเดือนก่อน
After 7 years I finally got window treatments for the 3 windows in my 600 sq ft condo in downtown St Petersburg, FL. Thanks to Chris at Budget Blinds of North St Pete for the excellent work! Not only did he bring samples and measure, but he also performed the installation, and came back for some adjustments afterwards. This is the way to do it!
Sleep nerd review of Google Nest Hub (2nd gen)
มุมมอง 197ปีที่แล้ว
I always buy Google stuff from store.google.com during their annual Black Friday event, which lasts a few weeks. I wanted a smart display in my bedroom, and the 2nd gen Nest Hub is perfect since it has no camera, and the display can be set to go completely dark when it detects the lights have been turned off. It also has sleep tracking features, which I reviewed here. Google says they'll start ...

Clint's Google Home morning routine
มุมมอง 13ปีที่แล้ว
Clint's morning routine, as configured in the Google Home app. Note on thermostat: At night I manually set the fan to On for white noise. Unfortunately there isn't a way to tell the thermostat to set it back to Auto in a routine. You can only change the setpoint and the mode, e.g. Cool or Heat. You can't change the fan from On to Auto. Note on News: Instead of playing Google's fixed News choice...
Nerd bathroom remodel
มุมมอง 602 ปีที่แล้ว
I'm fine with the "dated" granite and other stuff that came with the condo I bought in 2017. But I do appreciate a few gadgets and functional upgrades. The cabinet is from a company called Decadom. It's cheaper than similar high-end cabinets you'd find in a fancy bathroom store, and it has more features: www.amazon.com/Decadom-Bathroom-Mirror-Cabinet-Light/dp/B08VX4N6NN The open shelf that sits...
Candlewood Suites in Chester, PA

Finally made it to my summer 2022 digs near Philly. Here's a 5-minute video showing the hotel & surroundings in Chester, a somewhat sketchy industrial town SW of Philly. To my surprise, it turns into a nice suburban area with rolling hills and winding streets just 5 minutes north. Went to a great diner this morning (passed on the scrapple, thanks). Looking forward to many more. The neighborhood...
A technician from the A/C company (Kron & West) identified this as an issue with the "motor module". He knew as soon as he heard the thunking sound. He said it's fairly common, and sometimes referred to as "hunting" due to the motor repeatedly trying to start, almost as if it can't decide which way to turn. He says a power surge can cause this. We experienced several here in the Tampa Bay area as Duke Energy was restoring power following hurricane Helene. I should have turned the A/C off during that period. Luckily, the part was under warranty since it was only 4 years old. However, I did have to pay for labor, which came to $615 with tax.
Notice the light fixture extends beyond the vanity to cover all available wall space. Having as much bright, white (5000K) light as possible in a bathroom is ideal, especially to start your circadian rhythm "timer" first thing in the morning (which is what counts the most). It's also nice during the day, but you want to use dim light at night that's warm (2700 or even 2500K). I wanted the light to be dimmable, but didn't get a color tunable one since I think it's best to use a dedicated white light that can go super bright, and use a separate switch attached to warm lights for nighttime ambiance. Then you don't have to mess with an annoying app to change the color temperature. I follow a convention throughout my place that the first switch is the "warm" light and the second is the bright white light (so as not to catch anyone by surprise). I had the fan switch moved closer to the potty & shower for convenience, and to avoid too many confusing switches next to the door. I found myself always using the bath towel to "save" the hand towel for guests. But I think guests appreciate paper towels more. Also, I use them myself for cleaning (once a year, at least). I like the aluminum shelf on top for stuff that can be wet and is used often. That's better than putting it in a medicine cabinet, especially if your hands are wet. Who cares if people see that stuff? What would I change...? In retrospect I think the age-old advice about getting as large a vanity mirror as possible is best. But if you achieve that with a medicine cabinet the doors are going to be too big & heavy. Also, you end up with a seam. I'd instead look for a big mirror that is backlit all around, ideally with a dimmer, color tenability and a clock. (Don't get a built-in TV screen since that will become obsolete too fast). Storage doesn't have to be in the mirror. I'd use mostly open storage elsewhere (such as on the side). For the few things you really don't want people to see I'd either use the vanity cabinet or reclaim more space in the walls with sunken cabinets. Speaking of a screen, I had an outlet installed on the right side of the vanity so the power cord for the Google Home sitting on the back of the toilet didn't have to snake across the counter.
I like the multitude of light settings in the space
It was a pleasure installing this cabinet first time I've ever done anything like this. Not to forget we did it during a tropical storm in Florida
Looks really high tech...the fan's quietness is very nice...as is the timer, so it doesn't get forgotten, running too long. Great job by Cliff!
Looks nice!!
