I used to listen to this song when I was a teen. I don't want to be 16 never again, but the passion that comes from anger and the willingness to fall completely in love with no fear holding me back makes me want to find some of the wildness that I lost.

I told my wife, "I'm going to play you a song, then I'm going to cry, and then we can talk about it. That is what exactly what happened. The verse about being broken is a punch in the soul. I was a mariner most of my life and as a result of that, and a tumultuous childhood, I have a lot of deep seeded emotional baggage. I don't feel like I was a great husband or father and am of the age where men didn't discuss their feelings. The devil will get his due and all of that stuff will bubble to the surface in one way or the other. This song is a release valve I never knew I needed. To me, the song is the ballad of an empty nester, with regrets. Though I'm sure other people see themselves in the song for other reasons.

What a beautiful song, she has such a soothing voice, like a soft blanket that keeps you warm and cozy and protected ❤

Everyone has such a sad feeling from this - I get the opposite it reminds me of how hard everything is but to keep going it reminds me of a snowstorm- so hard , cold, and time consuming to walk through but once you finally get to the destination you can relax.

My personal perspective of this song is about how during the day, one would hang onto the stress of their responsibilities and worry about meeting expectations, whether they're from someone you know or society as a whole. However, during the night, you can let go of that stress. You won't have to meet expectations, and you can get a chance to calm down and 'breathe'. So when the moon rises, you know that you are now able to be free of whatever problems you had earlier on for just that small portion of time. Some lines make me think that this could also be about traumatic memories. Anyways, here's a few of my interpretations: "Days pull you down just like a sinking ship, floating is getting harder" - The stress of day pulling you down, and that making it harder to keep going "But tread the water child, and know that meanwhile, rises the moon" - Knowing that you will be able to let go of that stress once the day is over "Days pull you up just like a daffodil, uprooted from it's garden" - Feeling unprepared for what will come of the day, as if it just came so suddenly "They'll tell you what you owe" - Them, whoever they are, adding onto your stress. Maybe by pressuring you into doing something you aren't ready for, or really just doing anything that gives you the feeling of wanting to leave to a safe place. "You'll be visited by sleep" - Either referencing sleep deprivation, or for a deeper meaning, that you'll be visited by peace during the night so that you can seek refuge from the emotions you feel during the day. "I promise you that soon the autumn comes to steal away each dream you keep" - Perhaps letting go of traumatic memories, which is probably what "memories swim and haunt you" is referencing. The way this is sung makes me believe that the singer is calming down a stressed/traumatized person, with the promise of peace and calm ahead of them, and that despite what the day brings and how difficult it'll be for them to push through it, they'll be rewarded with tranquility.
