This was my first time at Perry Hill which is home to some gnarly enduro trails. Rode everything I came across except for one feature! I checked out Small Axe, Six Flags, Disneyland and S'Mores. Definitely ride here if you have not before!

Thank for the video. Is it me or for what this bike is it’s on the heavy side.
very thorough overview of the new Gen 4 and nice comparison with the previous model. Thank you for doing this!
Would you say a gen 3 marigold red purple essentially brand new for 2400 is worth it?
@@logankesler3421 depends on the spec, but more than likely yeah! Go for it
@DCDean it's the full carbon 9.8 setup mostly stock with the eagle AXS basically everything it came with brand new when it was 6k+
@@logankesler3421 great deal!
My front brakes seemed to be glazed on delivery of my 2022 Top fuel 8. When i upgraded rotor size to 220 later on i inspected the pads and they had a sheen to them. Bit of sanding and rebedding and i can stand the thing on its nose now!
9,8 gen 4 now come with aluminium wheel, that just insane bad value imo
WAS GOING FAST DOWN TRAIL DESCENDING, WENT OVER ROCKS FLEW IN THE AIR AND CAME DOWN LANDED ON THE BAR CRUSHED MY BALLS AND CRASHED INTO THICKET OF THORN BUSHES. MY RIDING BUDDY WAS GOING OVER SAME ROCKS, SEAT CAME OFF AND LANDED ON THE SEAT POST UP HIS BUTT. RUINED HIS PANTS AND OUR DAY. BOTH BIKES WERE TOTALED.
Great video! I have the Top Fuel 9.8 XT ProjectOne color variation as well. I havent made any changes to the bike and I'm considering upgrading to a 130 fork. I ride it on drops and jumps and I've taken this bike to the bike park. I was wondering what upgrades have you made to your Gen 3 Top Fuel? Also, did you paint the door to the internal storage?
It's a great bike! Definitely go 130, just makes it that much more capable. At this point my Top Fuel is pretty much fully custom. Only stock items are handlebars, rear shock body (not the air sleeve) and bottom bracket. Trek sells the storage cover painted various colors and I snagged the matching one.
@ Yea, I think I’ll upgrade the fork to a 130. Thanks so much!
I narrowed it down between frame only top fuel or the transition spur!! also would be frame only built to my spec
@@davewallace9048 both would be great! I have not ridden the spur but would love to try one.
Do you know what the bike weighed?

The derailleur attack @ 3:43
Could you drop some trail names? I don’t recognize any of them. I did catch black bear though. I’m wondering where the first set with the drops was.
Just added timestamps! Those drops at the beginning are at the very start of Moose Deuce.

Always a great day with the crew!
Gen 3 looks better for sure. I think this applies to most Trek bikes imo. I have gen 5 Slash 9.8 XT and it looks better than gen 6 imo and i also have Gen 4 Rail 9.8 Gx and it looks better than upcomming gen 5 rail imo. Idk but i think Trek did one step back with the bike looks when it comes to 2022-23 models compared to 24-25. 1 thing i think they did right is the specs on next gen bikes. Next gen Trek rail 9-8 xt at 10k price comes with ultimate shock rear and front which is big up compared to previous that came with select+
Nice video, my friend. Keep it up.
✌
How tall are you and inseam?? Im a m/l but thinking about going medium
@@aaronphillips2728 6ft. 32 inch inseam
@DCDean im 5 10 with 32 inseam but my slash feels a lil to big. Looking into top fuel meduim frame for playful feeling
@@aaronphillips2728 I think m/l top fuel would still be the move for you. It's a tighter bike overall compared to the slash. But if you really want a super flickable bike at the expense of higher speed stability and possibly overall fit, medium would still be rideable.
@DCDean thanks for the advice . Going to try to find one at the local dealer
How fall are you ? And did the medium large fit you ok ? Thanks
@@davedoesabit 6ft but proportionally shorter limbs. M/L felt great
@@DCDean am 5.10 just ordered a medium Ave got short lets it was on sale but am thinking will it be to small
Thanks for the review. I've been considering one of these to replace my old Fuel EX. The new EX is just too much bike for most of my riding. This seems more line with what the EX used to be.
What size bike was this and how tall are you?
@@re7qi M/L and I'm 6ft tall but with shorter limbs
@@DCDean Would you say M/L or L fits you better? I'm a similar height, looking at Top Fuels but not sure on sizing and can't try them in-person
@@re7qi having now ridden both, I prefer the M/L. Keep in mind I have slightly shorter legs/arms which factors in. The M/L felt like it turned more naturally.
Really good review!
Thanks for the review... super thorough. I've been thinking about getting into mountain biking and the Trek site recommends the Top Fuel for me. I got an old 7.5FX that keeps on trucking but looking for more outdoor adventure. I appreciate your skills, in addition your input. Ride safe.
I love these flowy green warm-up trails.

That's a fast bike!
What is your opinion on the gen 4 model5?
Good entry into the Top Fuel frame, but in my opinion the suspension would be holding back the bike. It's a shame there's no TF7 gen 4 available as an option. I would suggest trying to find a Top Fuel 7 or even 8 Gen 3 for the price of the Gen 4 Top Fuel 5.
Love me some Hillfarmer!! Thanks for sharing
Heading to Bear Brook soon to enjoy the trails on my still new 17 Fuel EX. Great bike and more in line with the recent Top Fuel!
Trek should offer a raw alloy frame it looks badass with all black. Nice blade though.
I took my fat bike to cape cod and biked on the beach too. I biked 40 mins trying to get to the furthest lighthouse and found a bunch of naked people on the beach.
Oh dude we missed this?!
Great video. There are some good deals on the gen 3s now and I’m thinking of going that direction with an XT build. I live in CO so there’s often a long climb with techy bits to start a ride. Do you think the gen 4 is worth it for the improvements to climbing capability? Thinking of Hunt Race Wide alloy wheels as a light wheelset upgrade since the OEM wheels are garbage. Thanks again for the well put together review and comparison.
Both are great technical climbers. Gen 3 is ever so slightly more active generating traction, and the Gen 4 made up for the stiffer platform by having a slightly longer chainstay length to generate grip. If you find a good deal on the Gen 3 it's probably worth going that route still.
Im happy they brought the integrated bar and stem to the top fuel even though i dont like it. But fact is the resale value on those bars are great cuz they always sold out.
great to see an East Coast review
12:25 Are you sure this is not because the older bike has a top-end wheelset? Other than geo making a bike lighter should make it more willing to fly. And weight is the most important at the wheels on a bike.
To me it felt more like a timing issue. I also have a comparatively heavy Trek Slash so I'm familiar with trying to hop heavy bikes 😁
The Bontrager dropper is tragically bad as well. A BikeYoke or OneUp is a big upgrade!
That place looks awesome
Trek seems to have an issue with overpricing compared to build specs. The components are always lesser than but they will always premium price. Don.t get me wrong, I love Trek bikes. I own one myself along with several other brands but yeaaah, they need to chill with the Bontrager components on higher model bikes.
Right now pretty much everything but this Gen 4 is on sale. I can pick up a Gen 6 EX 8 for $2800 (MSRP $4300). I would expect to see this on sale next year.
Just picked up a gen 3 carbon xt 9.8 top fuel for 3800 at my lbs it rips!! I love it for xc/trail riding. Def adds alot of value to my fleet!!
@@Eddie65001 killer deal!
