    indys cars schedule is holding it back as a series. you have three races and then a half month break; its super inconstant. Also the series needs more races, nascar has 33 races f1 has 23 indy has like 17!! we need at least 20 races.

    Sean Wrona/racermetrics from the Platform Formerly Known as Twitter. I've interacted with both of you before but this is the first full episode I've watched since I've been more focused on my book research. I'm a lot older than you guys as I'm an early millennial and I think both you guys are early zoomers. I've been watching since the mid-'90s. My first race was the 1994 Pepsi 400 (the race where Jimmy Spencer won and got away with an illegal intake manifold), and the first IndyCar race I watched was the 1995 Indy 500. I was a much bigger NASCAR fan as a kid, but I vastly preferred IndyCar for most of the 2010s so I can see both sides of it here. Like you, I was a big Newgarden fan for a while (in his Ed Carpenter/early Penske years) but I admittedly fell off a few years ago as it seemed like he was becoming more and more of an egotistical blowhard (stuffing Grosjean into the wall at Nashville and saying "welcome to IndyCar" was a total Joey Logano move that pretty much turned me off from supporting him) but I have no problem with you being fans of him. I imagine I was one of the specific people who Zack was annoyed by because Malukas became my favorite driver at Gateway 2022 and I admit I said a lot of pissy stuff when Malukas was fired. Looking back, I still think that was a pretty rare situation historically. I can't even think of a case in any form of racing since I started watching 30 years ago where someone was fired after being hired and injured before even starting a race. That WAS rare and I think worthy of the social media backlash it got and trust me, it wasn't just kids who've only been watching two years who were pissed. If anything, the fact that my job got automated two years ago and I haven't had a day job besides some writing gigs ever since made me more willing to be empathetic. In retrospect, once it was revealed throughout the season that McLaren had become racing's biggest Firing Squad, I'm glad he's out of there. I know you'll argue I'm being hypocritical, but I think the Blomqvist firing was fair. He was fired for poor performance and because he was on pace to fall out of the Leader's Circle, while we don't know that Malukas would have had poor performances after coming back from his injury (and indeed, he hasn't and has been immediately faster than Blomqvist), and since they dumped Pourchaire for that nobody at around the same time Malukas came back, it stung even more. I never even liked Alexander Rossi, but I definitely don't think he should have been fired either (especially keeping Siegel). I knew Blomqvist would fail before it happened and I predicted it last year (racermetrics.com/top-200-drivers-of-2023-drivers-90-to-81.php). The Morris Schuring entry also aged nicely. I think I'm old enough and I've been around long enough to look at it dispassionately and say, yes: this is the worst IndyCar has been since 2010. The competition is nowhere near as good as people argue it is as it's pretty much become an upset whenever Palou doesn't win a road/street race and Newgarden doesn't win an oval race. Penske/Ganassi have basically just as much of a stranglehold over the series as they did then. While the overall field is probably better now, it doesn't help that there are so many drivers with questionable credentials in the top cars (the 3 ride-buyer Ganassi team is really galling me; I'd honestly rather see them just drop down to the #9 and #10 again and free up those cars for other teams). The Thermal Club was a real kick in the teeth to working class fans. Maybe it's a good marketing opportunity but it really made a lot of older fans feel unwelcome. The loss of Texas (which I didn't even care for much, but it was the best races last year) was reprehensible as it was the third-biggest tradition. The racing has just been dull every single week except for Indy and that didn't use to be the case, even prior to the hybrids. The increasing reliance on doubleheader events to make it look like there are more tracks on the schedule than there are makes it look cheap. I don't really like Penske owning the series while also owning a team, but there have been those conflicts of interest for freaking ever. The entire IndyCar split was about USAC/IRL wanting a series centered around Indy for which all other tracks were ancillary vs. CART who wanted all races to have equal promotion. Since CART lost, it's obvious why we're back here. What's strange about it is that Penske is one of the co-founders of CART and yet he's continuing to run the track like the Hulman-George family. I did not expect that. (1/2)

    • @arenasnow
      @arenasnow 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I will admit I'm probably overstating it because the 2010s was the first time I liked IndyCar more than NASCAR, and it feels like since Jim France took over for Brian that NASCAR has gotten its mojo back while IndyCar has grown sterile. I know you guys hate the Next Gen car, but I actually really like it and it seems this has been a major divide between millennial and zoomer NASCAR fans, as it seems like the people who started watching in the 2010s hate it and the people still around from the 1990s/2000s like it. I think it has helped spur competition back to 2000s levels after a major competitive decline in the late 2010s. And more to the point, NASCAR finally started adjusting the schedule rather than running the same 36 races in the same order with no variations to the point it got sterile. Their willingness to shake things up in all sorts of ways like adding a bunch of new tracks and the rain tires on ovals have brought back an element of surprise that has been badly missing for years. There was energy and excitement again and there hasn't been in IndyCar in years. And they've definitely been treading on IndyCar's turf once they started adding so many road courses: the percentage of road/street courses on the Cup schedule isn't far off the percentage of ovals on the IndyCar schedule (particularly if you only count the doubleheaders as one event), so can IndyCar even claim it has the most diverse drivers anymore? And it's clear IndyCar drivers aren't as good as Cup drivers on ovals or the top F1 drivers on road courses. The racing isn't even close to being as exciting as Formula E either, though few people seem to care about that series. I think IndyCar just looks so much worse to me because for many years I was touting how it was better than NASCAR and I can't say that anymore. That's not even mentioning all the social media bullshit. Sure, I contributed to the anti-McLaren hate earlier in the year, but all the Canapino stuff really made the series look like a joke and the Ferrucci stuff as well. Ferrucci is frustrating me because even though I certainly can't stand him, I also tend to be annoyed by all the people who want to run him out of the series for being immoral. He's a good driver and I want him in the series but I just don't want them to promote him, yet it seems like they are choosing to promote him like no other driver. Um, he's good but he's not that good, guys. Can he still be in the series with some kind of promotional blackout? Apparently not because outrage is what gets good ratings/media attention/clicks. I was a fan of Robin Miller, but I think he was wrong that "hate is good". If the racing is good, maybe all this sort of off-track bullshit would be more ignorable, but it HASN'T been good so that stuff has made it additionally insufferable, and I don't think it's just you being Newgarden fans that makes you feel this way. It really is worse, but maybe I'm just judging it against Cup's improvement. (Of course you probably don't feel like Cup is improved 'cause I know you're Next Gen haters and I'm a defender...) And the last driver to win the title and Indy 500 in the same season was Franchitti in the aforementioned 2010. All but one of the Indy 500 winners from 2005-10 went on to win the title and it's weird that all five years it's happened since the split began were in such a short period, but maybe it does say something about the shittiness of that era. That's the one thing I will say about this era over that one: much better Indy racing right now, but if that gets ruined by the hybrids, boy howdy... I also get what you're saying about FOX. As someone who goes back to Bob Jenkins-era ESPN, I thought even early FOX paled and I didn't even like their supposed classic period in the 2000s. DW was really pandering to rednecks in a way the '80s and '90s broadcasts didn't. I found boogity boogity boogity cringe from day one. And the post-9/11 jingoism didn't help. As someone who was against the Iraq War before it started, watching the increasingly bombastic pre-race military displays egging us on to war got quickly insufferable and I stopped watching NASCAR and even racing entirely in 2003/early 2004. I was going off to college and a highly prestigious one and it would have reflected poorly on my reputation if it came out that I was a NASCAR fan when NASCAR was the symbol of all sorts of neocon bullshittery. Then after I was completely and entirely rejected in college, I rebelled by getting back into it again. But it did seem like the switch to FOX for NASCAR even from the start set NASCAR back twenty years culturally and I didn't even like the "Have you ever"/"No I've never" era. The '90s CBS and ESPN booths did not treat the fans like idiots but FOX did from day one. (You win some, you lose some though. I was excited when TNN lost its coverage because Eli Gold was the worst play-by-play guy in NASCAR history.) So do I see them rednecking up the IndyCar broadcasts in the same way? It's hard for me to imagine them being more redneck than they already were honestly after Cheever/Goodyear and Tracy/Bell. Robin Miller isn't around anymore to pick the booth selections and he was the only reason Tracy was hired to begin with, so I don't think you have to worry about that. I also think the TV booths have somewhat moved away from courting controversy while all that has mostly moved into the social media space, so I expect the broadcasts to be more milquetoast. I do love the idea for Hildebrand in the booth though. Dude's a genius and one of the most intellectually gifted drivers while also not being full of himself like too many IndyCar drivers are now. Bestwick/Hildebrand/Hinchcliffe. Let's go. (2/2)

    NBC didn't even mention during the nascar race at least two pit road penalties, they didn't mention Hocevar's penalty, there's a penalty from a couple weeks ago they never mentioned... I don't miss Fox's cameras, but I do miss them actually talking about nascar. NBC seems to forget to do that. Wrt indycar's hybrids, have you considered that they need less fuel? That's great for both the environment and pit stops, isn't it? /gen What I don't understand is you complained about NBC not having driver tires on the pylon for nascar, but you're complaining about them showing when indycar drivers were using the new electric component? Would you have known every driver was using it on the straightaways if they hadn't done that? Would you have gotten the sense that it _is_ everyone, and not just most? I think another part of the reason the nascar EV looks weird is that it was a partnership with toyota, ford, _and_ chevy as well. Also, the article I read the day before they debuted it had nascar saying very clearly that they were just seeing if they could, that there were no plans to implement it or anything like it, and they weren't planning a separate series for it. And then NBC made it sound like it will eventually be a nascar vehicle and i'm so confused. That said, i'd love an electric nascar series, because then I could actually maybe go to a race - I am super sensitive to sound and vibration (as well as smell) so it's easily a no currently. Wrt them needing to charge during the race, they could swap batteries out. That'd bring a new and interesting component into racing. All that said, for nascar, going hybrid is def the way to go. It'll save fuel while also still being loud af for people afraid of change. Did y'all see Bowman's interview in NASCAR's presspass thing on their site? It rocked, he was so cute! And Bob Pocrass was so mean! (But also he apparently lost a bet to Bowman lol)

    I like the intro music and how all three of you appeared, even if Zack stumbled on the intro, still fun! Jackson Todd had a great point on the "fake street course" we see at Formula 1 or Formula E and how NASCAR in Chicago is right there in a tourist destination. I loved Jackson's description of the PA announcer and I have to ask, did they ask fans to do the "Macarena"?

    Idk, I love the unlimited restarts. Not only was it a blast, but it means the ending is never set in stone. I def agree that nascar running so many caution laps was really weird though. My best guess is that they were trying to make the people who were about to run out of fuel do so during caution to avoid yet another caution. Also shout out to my boy Hemric for getting his third ninth place! It was so fun to watch him creep up from 18th during the restarts ^^ The Logano hornyposters on tumblr _definitely_ knew he won. There's like. Three of them? (given how active a nascar fandom there is on tumblr, that's like. A quarter of us) Shoutout to the headphone users with that shout, I was watching it on my tv and I still jumped 😂 I get two pride months! This month is disability pride month :D (well, I kinda get three with autism acceptance month, but I also have to deal with Autism Moms and "ABA is great! My kid doesn't cry when I force rough clothes on them [(which physically hurts them)] and they say 'I love you' and let me hug them!" -- a recent study showed it's all of 15% effective and within 4 weeks over 50% of autistics put through it qualify for a PTSD diagnosis. But anyways. This is gay racing not autistic ranting) I had such a fun time listening to this, and am sad it's over, although my wrist is certainly glad (I color while listening to turn my brain off). I hope y'all have a lovely week! EDIT: you also had 5 attempts to finish your picks. A+ XD

    The unlimited overtime rule reminds me of the rule(s) the NHL has around shootouts to end ice hockey games. By and large, the team that controlled play throughout regulation time will win in the shootout, but every so often an opposing goalie can steal a W for their side, despite their team getting outplayed otherwise. The Logano win yesterday feels awfully similar to a goalie willing their team to a W by doing just enough to get to the shootout and then have some bounces go their way to turn the tide as a part of the game within a game. Zack may not like me saying this, but I was pulling for Hamlin to get the win yesterday after Bell crashed out. He'd had a great run and if not for the silliness of 5 Overtimes, probably wins it with the best car still on the track. As much fun as NASCAR may see 5 OTs as with the 'You never gonna know what'll happen!!1!', as a new fan (thanks to y'all), having to switch from a TV broadcast to an online stream of the race because NBC decided to cut the feed partway through the OTs to show USA Olympic trials makes me wonder how much credibility the brand has if track and field gets broadcasting priority. Sure, it's maybe unfair to characterize it like that given the rain delay likely eating up the majority of the buffer time in the TV schedule, but I feel that my point about broadcasting priority still holds. Appreciate y'all walking me through this whole car turn left deal. I assume the podcast name is back to The Racing Podcast now that June's over. Much love and stay safe through these crazy times we're goin' through <3

      The switch is because it's the _US Olympic trials_ -- of course it'd take precedence over a nascar race! It also has to do with how the tv slots work. I don't fully understand it, but they lose money when they overtake another broadcast. And for something like Law & Order -- a rerun of course (which is the channel it switched to) -- that's like. Nothing. Whereas something as big as olympic trials is not only live, but also a country-wide thing that the country comes together for. It makes sense if you ask me (clearly). And welcome to nascar!! If you haven't already, nascar's website has a pretty robust nascar 101 section. There's also a lot of people who know a lot (if you go to tumblr and ignore the thirst-posting, there's a handful of people on there who know their stuff and are happy to answer questions. If you're on there you may want to blacklist Dale Jr though. There's someone who posts many times a day about wanting him)

    It's so funny when people make up reasons to hate a driver. Like. You can just dislike a driver. (I dislike Larson as a nascar driver, but not as a person, or a driver in other series. Just the nascar ones. No clue why. He's not a bad driver, he's not overly aggressive, he's not an ass on or off the track... I just don't like him. And that's fine. You don't have to make up a reason :"D) Also, the F1 fandom on tumblr? hm. you should check it out. I'd thought Briscoe was doing better than Gragson, but I wasn't sure, so I checked, and Briscoe is 16th while Gragson is 25th (Briscoe is ahead by 108 points). That's a pretty substantial difference. In that past Briscoe certainly wasn't better, but he's been steadily improving. (Yes I _did_ realize that I can type a comment and then resume listening and just not submit the comment until the episode is over!) (edited because I forgot to erase part of my comment after looking up the stats)

    ...i'm a distressed Daniel Hemric fan (well. I was entirely unsurprised. I went "awwww" and then moved on and went back to rooting for Bell, because Hemric needs some more practice lol, Denny said Hemric is the most hardworking driver so I have faith he'll improve. I mean, he got two 9th places so far this year!)

    15min practice for 36 cars for 36 races (38 if you include non-points races) adds up to a _fuckton_ of fuel, not to mention the time they have to pay people for being on the clock for it. If I did my math right, that's 324 _hours_ of practice. That is a significant number.

While you won't alienate me, you will alienate a large portion of your prospective audience without them ever clicking the thumbnail to give you a chance. I don't just mean people who dislike gay people, I mean people who are more focused on Nascar than...whatever else is being presented. You're both talented, you have good talking points and are good presenters and obviously know the racing world. Let your talent and personalities and knowledge lead the way and guide your product. You're more than your sexuality. Good luck guys.

    I definitely enjoy a lot of the Fox commentary, and the camerawork itself is excellent, and they're great about getting good angles. I don't mind them looking at the crowd, either. It's a matter of _when_ they do it. Earlier in the broadcast they explained flipping the stages, too, and the fact that there wasn't really any strategy because they hadn't raced enough yet to know what to plan for. ...I think. That last one might have been during the xfinity race. My major gripe with Fox, besides being Fox and having nationalist propaganda, is the interviews. How often do we not get interviews? Saturday we got an interview with first place and _fifth_ but screw the guy who just got second for a _ninth time,_ the guy who's been racing roadcourses his whole life, and the rookie who got fourth in his third race. Let's play the Cup practice from earlier today! 🙄 And then with Cup, we got what, first and fourth? This isn't terribly uncommon either. If there's something happening then yeah, sure, but do the interview anyways and put it online! But if it's just a replay of practice and nascar already has the time, interview them! It's ridiculous. I do really think that Harvick has improved the broadcasts tremendously though. He brings a lot into it that nobody else has, and I love it.
