The financial reality of modern versus historical homesteading
มุมมอง 20ปีที่แล้ว
Just a real quick unlimited overview of the difference between homestead and today versus back in the eighteen sixties and a reality check about the necessity of having an income. You don't have to agree with me. And this is mostly geared towards the people who are really thinking about jumping into homesteading. My views on this don't mean that you can't do it, but you need to know what it rea...
Compost isn't complicated!!!
มุมมอง 36ปีที่แล้ว
Creating good compost doesn't require intricate scientific methodology or overcomplicated formulae. Just get your greens and browns in there, do a bit of very occasional maintenance, and let it cook. Overthinking is NOT required or going to help.
Simple hog panel hoophouse build 2023
มุมมอง 15ปีที่แล้ว
Building one of these hog panel hoophouses isn't complicated and doesn't require an engineering degree. Just remember that simple doesn't mean easy! Extend your growing season, overwinter perennials like peppers, grow winter lettuce, or just have a quiet space to enjoy your coffee. Find the link for this video on our Ank Homestead Facebook page and share a picture of your hog panel hoophouse!

Marcescent Fall? Will our trees be okay?

Learned new things about trees and weather & had to share. I hope my 100 year old fruit trees bounce back!
Keep your chickens alive in subzero temperatures
มุมมอง 712 ปีที่แล้ว
A lot of people ask about protecting their flock when we have extreme colds. The trick is not what you think it is probably. Heat lamps burn down dozens if not hundreds of coops and barns every year, killing entire flocks. Here's the key!
Homesteading isn't easy; there's always have-to's

You will always find that there is something that has to be done no matter what your mood is or what the weather's like when you're on a Homestead.

man I must've pulled out 500 kg of these white roots out of neglected yard, trying to convert to garden put mulch down and they are already popping up shoots, I'm organic so guess only option is to part the mulch and dig em out while they are early

Yeah, it's an ongoing battle unless you cover the whole yard with 5 layers of heavy cardboard for 3 or 4 years. :/ Good luck!

I dug some ground over preparing for a new raised bed. I only dug an area about 2m x 1m and must have pulled out 100m of couch grass roots. Alot went deeper than 1 forks depth too

Best video on this topic so far. Thank you. So no feeding until it's growing season right? I'm on the Oregon Coast so it doesn't get super cold. It January right now. The nursery here has some Black Lace and is gonna get another variety in a couple weeks. So I'll pick up another then too. I don't want to miss out by waiting till they're all sold out. What do u recommend when in super sandy soil?

We have gone through this ourselves wondering about the heat lamp. We did it last year but didn’t this year and all the chickens were fine through that arctic blast. We hit -15 up here. Our chickens stopped laying for awhile there. We are just starting to get an egg or two a day now but not the 12+ we use to.

The short daylight hours cause the primary slowdown but the cold makes it worse due to the energy they expend staying warm. We tried high protein feeds in the coldest weeks but the results weren't consistent.

Thanks for the insight. I'm not a fan of chemicals but this is one grass weed I think needs a systemic method. Digging can help but can also make it worse. Attacking the plant at the cell level with multiple strikes seems like the only option.

We have couch grass in stony heavy clay soil. Impossible to remove effectively because the ground is so difficult to work with. It keeps invading garden beds and strangling everything. Creeps and covers over pavements and driveways and up fences. Even gets into pot plants via drainage holes and pierces through weed mats. Crazy stuff!

That’s good to know, does this typically for around concrete pads as well?

    • @ankhhomestead
      @ankhhomestead 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Depends on what you want next to the pad, and does the grass need to be kept away.
