A Weekend at my Mountain Town Home || Gardening, Cleaning, Baking, Sewing, & Furniture
A crunchy outdoors girl forces herself to do housework for a weekend and actually enjoys it. Every spring I find myself stuck in this little weird space between the desert heating up and the alpine thawing out that there is little to do (I mean endless mountain biking in town but less available longer adventures). I forced myself to stay in and check things off my to do list to help with my anxiety and overwhelm and I'm really dang happy I did

Solo Backpacking the Trans Catalina Trail
มุมมอง 5603 หลายเดือนก่อน
This April, I spent two days solo hiking this beautiful trail. This is a very low energy edit of my trip but honestly, the hike speaks for itself. After getting off the ferry in Avalon, I camped at Hermit Gulch. Day one was a 17ish mile hike over to Little Harbor Campground. Day two was a 22ish mile hike to Parsons Campground and back to Two Harbor Campground. To hike the Catalina trail, you mu...

My pup Indy joined me on the Colorado trail and before we started I STRUGGLED to find any resources about bringing a dog on the Colorado Trail. A short little video on how I planned out my food and resupplies on the Colorado Trail last summer and tips on what I would do differently next time around. As a vegan with a dog, I went for resupply boxes but for the CT, it isn't necessary! There's plenty of towns to pick up food if you plan your hike well. It saved me a lot of money to mail ahead of time though. 0:36 Cook System 2:20 Resupply...

It was also filled with a lot of complex and beautiful emotions that I'm still processing more than two years after leaving this same vall...

    I’m not a fan of taking dogs on the CT. It just seems like I met tons of people who have had to have their dog picked up or take multiple zero days to let them recover. Having said that, I think you covered some good prep tips. You mentioned going earlier in the year, but (depending on the year), I think later in the year is actually better. Less heat, less thunderstorms, and less snowfields.

      @wildjules วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's totally fair! I've meant plenty who have finished it and plenty who had to bail. It definitely is a huge difference in hiking style and stress honestly. The timing also is so year dependent. Right now, we're having endless thunderstorms and the first snow fall of the year in the San Juans but in late May and June, the weather was lovely, the snow helps cool off my dog, and monsoons don't typically start till August but they definitely started mid-July this year. Versus last year when I hiked, June would've been a really difficult snow trek through the collegiates and san juans. It's definitely easier to just not bring the dog but for me at least, I didn't have people I could leave him with for that long

    Congrats on your first big thru hike, and the excellent video. Great cinematography and a meaningful voice over. Really enjoyed it. For others considering bringing their dog on the CT, please consider it very carefully. Ensure your dog is in excellent shape and that they communicate well to you. I’d say dog shoes that they are comfortable in are a must because so much of the trail is rocky. And if you can’t carry your dog in an emergency, you should probably just leave them home. - Rocketman (Colorado Trail south 2017; Collegiate Loop clockwise 2019)

      Of course! I did West first from Twin Lakes, hiked for 3 days and spent a night at the Butterfly house before circling back and heading on Collegiate East. My partner at the time shuttled me back to Monarch after I reached Twin Lakes again. You have to repeat a couple miles but I'm really glad I did both

      @@wildjules Thanks so much. I'm planning to do the same. However, since I don't know anyone there to give me a ride, I might have to hike the west again. There are worse things I suppose!🍊

      @@atrailoforangeslices3506 Hitching into Buena Vista and then back to wherever you want to rejoin the trail usually isn’t too bad. (You will not want to hike the East twice because it isn’t the best part of the trail. And re-hiking the West will be more daunting than paying for an Uber.)

    I did just an overnight on the PCT near Markleeville with my pup a few summers ago and her paws blistered and burst on the first day! I think it was a combination of the heat and the rough granite. It was only our second backpacking trip together. I had to make some makeshift booties out of human socks, gauze pads, surgical gloves, and medical tape. It was so sad, she had to limp back to the trailhead because I wasn't able to carry her. Things I've added to my kit since then (many that you recommended here): booties (I got the RuffWear ones), vet wrap (lots of it), paw balm (either Musher's Secret or Natural Dog Company Pawtection), and a Garmin In Reach in the event that she got badly injured and needed an evacuation. I previously thru-hiked the Tahoe Rim Trail with another dog and we strategically timed our zero day in Truckee where there is a good doggy daycare if we needed it. He totally bonked and we ended up having to leave him there, but since it was part of our contingency plan we didn't have to scramble to make adjustments. Backpacking with a dog certainly adds some complexity and challenges, but it's so worth it!

    Oh my gosh, I know exactly how you felt that day on Section 6. I took my dog on Section 3 last September and he got so worn out - it was hot and a long day. He just kept looking up at me like "Can we stop now?". We stopped at every creek and I let him chill out as long as he wanted to, and I gave him all of my beef jerky as "treats". I felt so guilty. I really want him to hike more of the trail with me, but I don't want to put him through something like that again. He's hiked all over Colorado with me, but usually just day trips with lots of breaks. He's in good shape for a 10+ year old dog but...he's just getting older. 😞

  • @dbm1productions
    @dbm1productions 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I agree 100% that you hike at the pace your dog wants to go. I took my Golden-Doodle Tebow with me for Section 3 of the CT last fall (day hike) and I felt like that was pretty much his limit. He's done a lot of hiking with me, but he's getting older (he's almost 11 now) and I don't think he's up for many multi-day hikes. I'm hoping to bring him for Section 7 this summer (day hike again) but I'm worried that it might be too much for him. Musher's Secret is the best BTW. It help him so much! Anyway, thanks for all of the good advice. I'm going to try to find one of those packs that you have - haven't had much luck finding one that fits him but he is similar size to your Indy.
