Thirston Howell The Bird is a Congo African Grey parrot born August 14th, 2005. He was hand raised from an egg and because of this he thinks I'm his mom. Thirston makes only human sounds and can speak over 1000 words, phrases and sounds. He can express very specific wants or needs for food items by name. When he is sleepy he’ll say, "I want to go nite nite" or if he wants music he will say, “I want some music" when he wants me to turn on the stereo. Parrots are the smartest and most intuitive birds on the planet. So many are adopted and then surrendered due to their special need for both attention and food. He’s very loving and helps play with rescue kittens and cats to give them lots of love until they find their furrever homes.

Thirston has decided he does not want to eat his food if it’s in a bowl. He will get so angry that he won’t touch his food and he threatens to bite me and he will bite me. I wanted to get his antics on video. These parrots are so smart and have likes and dislikes just like people.

Brand new rescue babies. They look like little tiny panthers. They are so cute. The mom was a feral who was trapped when she was pregnant and she has now had her babies and they are three weeks old.

Thirston loves his little beta fish friend. He likes to watch the mice and watch TV and every night I go to the bookshelf and pick a book for him so I can read to him and now he knows when he’s ready for bed to walk over to the bookshelves. That’s his signal that he wants mommy to read him a bedtime story. Parrots are adorable and so smart.

They are still such little babies and sometimes when they want to play but they are literally too sleepy to get up they will play laying down. They are around eight weeks old but only the size of five week old kittens so they are still tiny, tiny for their age.

The babies are six weeks old and driving mom crazy. They look so healthy now. She was a stray taken to the shelter and she was going to be euthanized. I look at her babies and how precious and sweet she is and can’t imagine them not being here. I hope they make you smile.

Thirston is very spoiled. He loves his peanut butter and when I don’t give him enough, he gets mad and throws his food bowl. These babies and their mom were scheduled to be euthanized. They were rescued literally at the last minute. I’m trying to introduce two baby eight week old foster kittens to my adult cats and they would not have any part of it. These are only eight weeks old just baby kittens but when they poof up in anger, they look like adult cats lol. I hope it makes you smile even for just a minute.

Cats are so smart. Ruby knows exactly where the bacon is. Thirston on the other hand was on the counter while I was gone and threw a bag of flour on the floor and both cats pounced on the bag and got it all over the house. Like little kids.

Skittles is the little kitten who loves her mom and wants to be just like her. She mimics everything mom does and is learning how to clean and care for herself. Kisses mom all the time. Thirston was ready for dinner and flies in to enjoy. He comes when he’s called just like a dog or a cat. Greys are very easy to teach things too.

OMG! Everyone else sees a room overloaded with kitch and I see a room impossible to keep clean. I have a Congo African Frey and Grey keep their feather groomed using some special feathers they crush to get a powder. Otherwise known as feather dust. It stick to **everything*. Every surface, horizontal or vertical and in between. It doesn’t just come off with a Swiffer duster either. I have had an African Grey since 2001. Sometimes it takes awhile for the dust to accumulate where you can see it. Then it is too late to clean the easy way: with a top of the line air filter system to prevent the dust from getting on everything thing.
I've had two female parakeets for a year. I open the cage every morning and they get out when they want but they hang on the cage. They fly around the room but come straight back to their cage and sit on top of it or get on the floor. They never venture to anywhere else in the house so the only mess I have is the inside of the cage once a week and sweeping up the feathers and bird seed on the floor. I've had several female Dachshunds and everyone of them were killers, I would have never had a bird when I had those dogs. Best to you and all you try to do to help needy animals, I'm not that person, I want my own pet the way I want it. GOD BLESS
African greys can be so messy!! LOL They will throw everything all over. He knows he's spoiled. Glad you're just not showing the "pretty" side of birds. It's a lot of work and dedication to take care of them. They are basically in your life for the rest of your life and you gotta do the best you can if they have some temper tantrums. Thanks for showing this since other people need to see how they can be and how to correctly react to their needs and wants.

I got so many really mean hate comments that I had to delete them because I was scared if I left them up, that people would think it’s me and not the bird who is a slob lol. Some would then decide to get a bird thinking they could keep the house clean, but they cannot. It is impossible lol. I purposely let people see the worst in my house because when you foster kitty cats and have a parrot oh my goodness. I really do try to keep it as clean as I can but that kitchen is a daily bomb of dust and things he likes to throw around. If people want a bird, a happy bird they have to let them do these things. Hon, isn’t it dangerous for the bird to be around a cat or cats constantly? The cats instincts could kick in in any given moment then you wouldn’t have a bird anymore. I watch other channels with African greys and the ones who have cats do not let their grey anywhere near their cat as a precautionary measure. Just something to think about. Your bird is beautiful!! 😊
That’s really sweet of you to care enough to comment and I really appreciate it. Thirston is 19 years old and all of those cats that you see were foster kittens at one point so they grew up with him as their guide. They would never hurt him. They all love each other very much and if you watch some other videos, you’ll see the bond is incredible, it can be done. Love between species is very common if done correctly. He has free rein to fly around the house and do whatever he wants all day so sometimes when I come home I find him sleeping with them. It’s just precious. In most cases that people should be very careful and introduce them slowly and then watch them carefully until you’re sure but if you watch some more videos, you’ll see it’s safe.

I couldn’t work out, I thought she was saying that the bird threw the flour and stuff on the floor, but it’s all up and down the cupboards and stove. Surely that’s not all from him?
I know it’s a daily cleaning for sure so when you see video I want people to see how messy they are and that having an African Grey is like a full-time job because they are so messy. The house gets messy but at the end of the day it’s clean and beautiful and then the very next day it’s right back to being messy because he flies around all day and throws things on the floor and does his thing.

Parrots are so messy and that’s why they end up getting rehomed because people don’t like cleaning all day every day and then the sad thing is they put them in a cage in order to keep their house clean. I just won’t do that. He gets the house very, very messy but at the end of the day, I clean the house after he goes to bed. I start the whole thing all over again the next day. I want my videos to show people what it’s really like to have one of these beautiful babies and the mess is 100% a part of it. A lot of videos with parrots you see this sparkling clean house but that’s for the video and that’s not how it is real life with a parrot. People get confused thinking oh they aren’t messy. I’m going to go out and get one and then they find out how much work it is and then they just get rid of them. My baby is 19 years old and he’s an absolute slob, but I wouldn’t have it any other way, he throws food everywhere all day every day. I cleaned it up at the end of the day though although you’d never know it.
@@thirstonhowellthebird I really wasn't trying to say something bad it's just I get really defensive over animals because they really have no choice that is a dirty ass kitchen there is not one space of counter space available there's stuff all over the floor that is an unhealthy environment
@@notyourgrammascrafts did you hear me say in the video that he literally just threw an entire bag of flour everywhere. It’s his favorite thing to do so I purposely leave out a cup of flour just so he can throw it around. At the end of the day and this video shows at the end I clean and it looks brand new again but I wanted to make that video so people could see what it’s truly like to have a Congo. Maybe watch the video again until the very end and you’ll hear me say he literally just threw a bag of flour all over the floor.

It’s a 12 gallon tank and they had that beautiful baby in a cup at the store? I think 12 gallons is good for a beta fish. What are your thoughts? What size do you think it should be?
@@thirstonhowellthebird12 gallons is plenty of water, but Bettas are surface breathers so wide tanks are recommended over tall ones (so they don't gotta swim through so much vertical if they want a gulp at the surface). In nature they live in very shallow waters. Ultimately I don't think it will have a big impact on his health, as long as his colors are bright and his fins are full. They do also love to have live plants, which is another wonderful hobby. Aquascaping is really fun.

Clipped and mutilated? His wings are not clipped. He has free range of flight and flys around the whole house. Watch some of the other videos, you’ll see he has full wingspan.

@@thirstonhowellthebird Raised my Congo from a just-weaned baby. Had him 18 years. He was bonded to my husband. When husband died, he "turned against me". Found him a good forever home and adopted a rescue Tinmeh, 17 years old. She loves me!

My wife’s aunt had a parrot that would make sounds of steps, creaking floors and doors at night. I think it was just having fun with my wife, because they didn’t like each other haha. He’d tell her she was bad.
