Everyone has told me the internals of the Transaxle was a boogeyman, and not to be touched. Thank you for dispelling that voodoo.
Great video series!
Thanks!
cant wait for the next upload! great work
Thanks!
INCROYABLE !!
Super helpful video! Planning to do this for my '83 NA
That's great to hear. Good luck!
IMPRESSIONANT!! MERCI POUR LE PARTAGE
Audi Motor 🙈🙈🙈🙈👎👎👎
How would you remove the diff? Just pull it out after the input shaft?
Exactly right. After the main carrier (input shaft) is removed, remove the side cover and pull out the diff.
Good series! idk if im in the majority but i prefer the sounds of maintenance and your voice over only, no music needed.
Thanks. You are not the first person to suggest this so I omitted the music with the latest video.
Good stuff. Pretty sure you shouldn't use Loctite 574 on the part with the paper gasket. 574 needs to have metal to metal contact to cure. Probably didn't hurt but it shouldn't be necessary. You could use something like a non hardening aviation gasket with a paper gasket.
Yes, I agree! I am hopeful that it will still seal and that the only downside will be a massive headache scraping off that paper gasket if I have to disassemble it again.
@@944restore Interesting that the side diff cover doesn't use an o-ring like my 968 transaxle
Agreed. The early 944s had a seal as well. Workshop manual says it was discontinued in June, 1984.
Nice crisp video, love it. What gear oil did you put back in?
Motul Gear 300. The car is still in pieces so unfortunately I can't comment on how well it's performing.
thank you for the video it's very helpful
Thanks. Glad to hear you found it helpful!
Great video dude but please, it’s called Porsche not Porscha! 🤟🏼
you still got time to delete this one
@@ernestonasution8693 no!
@@_maslooo_ Still pleeeeeenty of time
can i ask what the story is with your transmission mounts? have you replaced the rubbers somehow? cheers!
The rubber on the mounts are original. I did add urethane to stiffen them up a bit.
great helpful video thank you!... im also amazed at how white your shirt is, anytime i step into the garage i seem to be instantly covered in oil and grease!
Ha! I should use the same shirt each video so you can see it slowly turn into a black greasy mess.
Another one in the 944 gang, let‘s go. Really hope that your machine shop knew, that this is a silicon alloy block and you can not hone it with stones like normal alloy, and you have to etch the metal with a certain solution in order to properly hone it. There‘s Idiot shops everywhere that just hone it „normally“, and if that‘s what happened, you‘re in for a bad time. I‘m asking because of the cross hatch pattern that looks like a stone hone. Cheers mate
Thanks. The shop is reputable and had quite a few 924/944/928 cars parked outside. I've never had an alusil block honed before so I didn't know what to expect. I might be in for a surprise.
@@944restorewere the bores scratched? What triggered the trip to the machine shop?
Yep, 2 of the bores were scratched. I included pictures at the beginning of the video.
The original bore finishing process was less a honing operation, more accurately a lapping process where the aluminum is removed leaving the silicon.
It‘s not quite lapping. I don‘t actually know how shops remove scratches from the bore, but when you have a decent surface to be refinished, the aluminum is etched away, exposing the silicon crystals, which are pretty low friction. I guess the honing marks might be from scratch repair before etching.
I think I used shore 70 or 80 when I did mine. Upon removal both mounts fell apart completely, so the before/after difference in driving experience was pretty drastic.
That's great to hear it made such a difference. If I were to do it again I would choose a slightly harder urethane
@944restore it definitely increased transmission whine noise quite a bit, but I don't mind as I have a bit of a stripped down Clubsport theme to my car.
If using the original hardware don't forget the girdle washers are cupped and need to go on in the correct way. If you look at your old rod bearings you should be able to see three scratches on each half (if they are not trashed) where Porsche used a micrometer to measure them. This is the difference between Glyco and Porsche branded bearings.
That's a great tip about the washer orientation. I'll be sure to mention it in the next video. Thanks!
I wish I would have kept the old bearings to check for measuring scratches. They weren't too trashed.
The 944 content we need
When you first broke out the green marker my first thought was "no. how do you know it was assembled correctly?" Thankfully you did not use the marker for reassembly! Later cars are 99% the same, I think the big difference being the washer is not a separate piece on later cars. The one thing you missed, didn't mention, was clocking the two cv joints against each other for maximum articulation. On the cases align narrow with wide.
Ha! So true about not using the re-assembly marks. I guess at this point I shouldn't be surprised that something on this car wasn't assembled correctly. I don't remember reading about aligning the narrow with the wide in the workshop manual but that makes sense. Great tip, thanks!
Very nice, I did a reseal on mine last year. Wish this video was around then, not much content on the transaxle! Very informative 👏
Great video. Motivated me to just pull the tranny and reseal it instead of solving one axle seal thats leaking
Great to hear!
Great work, that came out terrific! A nice contrast with the lettering- subtle and not over the top.
Great detailed teardown. In future videos, do consider lowering the volume of the music - it is twice as loud as your voiceover. Just don't want your hard work to go to waste
Thanks! I'll lower that music volume next time.
@@944restore Or even better, no music at all. Great project choise 👌👍
Looks great!
