BUSHWACKER trail armor rocker panel cover install and review
Like many who live in the midwest, years of exposure to road salt have taken its toll on my truck. I have done my best to clean it as often as possible in the winter month but it catches up eventually.
I went to several body shops and most did not want to do rust repair. The quote I did receive was $3,000 which is too much for me to spend in this truck. Maybe it isn't too much for some but I am also not rolling around on $1400 a rim wheels and tires.
I decided to purchase plastic slip on covers from Bushwacker. The company has been manufacturing aftermarket parts for years so I felt the would be a good choice.
This install is on an 06 Sierra crew cab however, I believe the install will be the same for any of the like products.
Below is the link to the rocker panels used in this video for 99-06 sierra/silverado crew cabs:

Hi guys and gals!!!! A little advice I hope that helps. Do not use regular silicone as an adhisive or filler. Use 3Bond / Nissan silicone that comes in a mini caulking tube. It goes on very thick and is nealy impossile to remove after it drys. It is a grayish color and remains stable in all weather conditions. I am a master tech and have been using this to seal up eveything for for over 25 years, it is also paintable. This is by far the best I have ever used. Oh and FYI- very low odor.
Black Silicone will give you much better adhesion than the tape. Just take the time cleaning up the excess.
Have had mine for 10 plus years . Still works great !
Wilson Maria Lee Amy Clark Maria
???.
Looks fabulous!!! I am thinking of doing this and using a flat piece of wood between to allow staining. This would allow me to run wood flooring to existing baseboards ( no wall damage and no mini looking base) and stain all. What do you think?
You did a really nice job it looks great... But the two wave washers should have gone down on the bottom on the piece for the handle connects to the part that holds the ram..
Wow. The same 5 pack that was $60 four years ago, are now $104. Regardless, thank you for the insight!
You'd think that hiring someone to do it would've been the move...but I think you may run the risk of them damaging it or just f'ing it up completely. Good job
You don't use teflon tape on hydraulic fittings!
🇱🇷👌💯👍❤️
You are too picky. Looks good.
Soaking rusty parts in white vinegar always does the trick
I am worried that if go through heavy SNOW STORM that the whole plastic would be buried in the snow under my truck.....
I’ve had my Chain sharpener for so long I can’t remember. I have found it a true time saver, having different brands of saws all my chains sharpen well and can be sharpened many times. I’m careful to set the blade for a shallow cut extending the life of the chains.
Nice job! I really like that hammered green color, super nice finish. 👍
Still using 1978 vintage Rockchucker. Still running fine.
I have the same sharpener and never had to make any alterations to it to make it work properly. Mine is about 8 years old, maybe quality has suffered.
I just got mine 3 weeks ago and have sharpened eight chains on it and haven't had to do any special modifications either, other than the initial setup. I love it, and it works great....
Awesome turn-out! I have the same one, except black ball on handle. I figured you'd go with the original RCBS green, but that looks fine too. Great job.
Do you have a drill press cus if you have a drill press you can mount it to your drill press
Sell me your handle
I just completed a total rehab of my Dads Rock Chucker Jr. So satisfying to bring these pieces back to life!
That loose face of yours would drive me crazy
Never should of bent that chain stop. Should of put a washer down by spring and made sure it was attached correctly by spring.
The “Chain stop” goes behind the tooth not to the side 😆
what do you lube the ram bar with I’m new to reloading and don’t want to grease it due to dust and dirt in my garage.
I just did one of these yesterday took me 2 hours. 3-in wire wheel some 220 sandpaper and the scotch pad. Looks and works like brand new. No harmful chemicals involved. Don't use Grease it dries out and gets sicky. I use light oil
Who does not love a good old RCBS, good job
What kind of a MORON chops up a breaker bar to make a vise handle?
Great video
looks like a piece of crap
I just bought one a few days ago and the new ones have a different bottom that sets against the work bench or mounting board. I just used a short piece of 2x4 and a couple of large headed wood screws. I clamp it in my vise when I need to use it. On the chain stop I used brass shim stock and made bushings for both the base and the stop piece. I then used a small ball peen hammer to cup the original washers and they work okay now. Also had to file the ridges and flat spots off of the base pivot point for the chain stop. The main pivot for the grinder head has too much slack and can be pulled or pushed too far when cutting so that will be my next thing to modify. Other than those things it works great for the price. I hit a screw with my first use chain and this saved it. I have a bunch of files and one of those weird new clamp on the bar Chinese diamond hand crank sharpeners. The Chinese one I got is pretty crappy and does work if you have a lot of patience. Some of the files work, but they all get dull really quick from my experience. Thanks for posting the video!
Just ordered this machine, thankx for posting these mods. Great video
What size hose did you use?
Next time brush on Molly Grease on the Inner Rockers and wherever there is rust and where the 2-sided tape doesn't touch then use a spray rust inhibitor, "Not Primer", the Molly grease Actually Stops rust from Spreading, and it's Easier to use a Dremel for trimming and use a Vinyl/Plastic Filler for the Seam. @Made in the Midwest
Use a Leaf blower to Dry after washing.
Would it be a bad idea to use some type of adhesion promotion or possibly a sprt of glue instead of tape?
I used Good Old 3M Spray on.
unclear diction. hard to understand
Good video thanks for sharing. I have two chainsaws one uses 3/8'' p and the other 3.25''. Can the same grinding disc be used for both chains or do I have to buy different discs for each one?
Way better than looking at rust holes or welding in patch panels. I think it looks pretty good.
Just started reloading cleaned up my grandfather's old press RCBS Rock chucker-II that was in similar condition. Thank for videoing your work it was helpful making an easy process easier.
I found that there was way too much slop in the chain stop system. I took it apart and used a razor blade to cut off the flash so the washers would sit flush. I added a washer to tighten things up a bit. I also found that the metal part that acts as a stop for the chained had too big of a loop so the chain-stop flopped all over the place. I tightened the loop until the metal chain stop fit snug on the plastic shaft. There was another area that caused a lot of slop in the system. That was the plastic shaft going into the plastic shaft holder. I used shrink tubing to fill the gap. Once I got done fiddling with the chain stop system, it worked like a dream. It is well designed, but the manufacturing tolerances are terrible.
Will this pass a vehicle inspection?
Yes.
Is this sharpener good for a full chisel chain?
I'm going to buy another one of these for my chainsaw. The one I have now, I've yet to set it up. But I guess for good reasons. I'm going to use the first one for sharpening my bandsaw for sawmill and buy a secondary for chainsaws. Had someone tell me they bought one of these for sharpening his bandsaw blades (actually the guy that sold me the sawmill I have now.) But sent him this video so maybe if he buys another then he can make some of these changes to his, to make lifeca little easier. I'm thinking of clamping mine to wood also, so I can just use it on the tailgate of my truck. Might make things easier also.
Are you sharpening a semi-chisel chain here? Looks like some of the teeth are rounded like a semi...
Gheeesh / I think you need a drill bit sharpener too 🤔
..I bought a Rockchucker 50 years ago when l was stationed in Germany ..still have it, and except for bring a bit dirty it looks like it did 5pnyears ago...
nice video. a few suggestions based on much research over the years: - the chambers should only be about 3/4" deep, maybe an inch at the most. most would also say the house should be at least 20" x 16" - the back should extend down below the chambers a bit, to allow for easy landing and take off for the bats - most batologists (yes i made that up) say you should NOT use plastic mesh or screen, much better to score/rough the wood for grip - all seams should be caulked to keep water out
HOLY SHIT!!!! PAINT STRIPPER SOLVENTS IN A CLOSED SPACE.....!!! Now you know why one cannot buy Paint Stripper that has REAL ACTIVE Solvents... The same for the idiots who paint strip in a bath tub...... Do to the IDIOTS, Mythlene Chloride, Dimethlene Chloride, Toluene and Dimethyl Sulfide are no longer used in real paint stripper that is FAST Acting, super labor saving and REQUIRES TO BE DONE WITH A VENT-HOOD, OR OUTDOORS WITH FORCED AIR.....
So I have a press that got burned in a fire and I want to do the same thing. What did you do to the spring that holds the shell holder in place?
