I mean, I'm not him but my Junior year I was the backfield drum major for a section of the show then half way got to conduct in the front across from the head drum major... on a step ladder. All season most students and directors praised the head drum major for his work and his energy and for a big part of it I just sat in his shadow. It took close to the end of the season for me to realize that I wasn't there to be cool like him, I was there to fill my love for marching band and have a good time conducting the band. I grew to love my "small" and "unimportant" role solely for getting a front row seat and my energy resonated with the rest of the band. By the end of the season the band loved working with me and the following year I not only became head drum major, but the directors decided that they trusted me to serve as the ONLY drum major. That year I conducted 100 fun and energetic members who appreciated my work and eventually lead us to our first set of straight superiors at MPA in years. In summary, love what you do and continue your work. Nothing else matters. Either way, the rest will follow.

Thank you for replying! Looking back I definitely had the wrong mindset during marching season and I completely agree with you. This next season im gonna give it my all and follow my passion. Thank you for your comment because it truly did help me reflect on my attitude

I am so sorry I am seeing this so late! The best thing for me was knowing that I was just as important to the team. There was never a day where the staff or fellow Bluecoats didn't let me know how much they appreciated my time there. And as you can see I made it fun for myself, trust me I'm not just talking to the voices in my head during this, I am making it just as fun for me as it would be for anyone! Keep your head up and if you ever need anything let me know!

I’m in the James F. Byrnes marching band. We’re a high school-level program who’s going to Grand Nationals this year. We actually sing a lot, as it’s a much more effective tool for strengthening our tonal center and oral shaping as an ensemble without valves or keys to guide our pitch. I never notice when we sing, but when I listen back to recordings, we actually sound a lot like a choir with our styling and technique.

It's honestly one of the greatest parts of DCI. I absolutely treasure the recordings I have where we sang stuff like the ballad and corps songs (with Spirit of Atlanta).

If you can learn to sing in tune, you can learn to play in tune.
