New firmware update 2.0 ! How the Behringer UB-Xa compares to the Oberheim OB-Xa
Hi,
I´ve reconstructed a few sounds from my Oberheim OB-Xa on the Behringer UB-Xa. The UB-Xa has been limited to 8 voices in order to match with the OB-Xa. I´ve adapted the pan settings as well.
The UB-Xa uses the new firmware version 2.0. All sounds you hear in this video will be added as bonus files to my „Synth King Producer Pack“.
Enjoy the music!
Bernd

I was honoured to be part of the beta tester team for the Behringer UB-Xa. We did a lot of measurements, analysed filter sweeps, studied the schematics, tested countless firmware updates, suggested additional features and improvements, designed our first own sounds and finally made music with this great instrument. This particular unit shown in the video is a pre production unit (prototype) wit...

Behringer UB-Xa - - Milestone - - by "The Synth King"

This video showcases a complete song I´ve composed and produced with sounds exclusively from the Behringer UB-Xa (except drums). The opening bass line was made with the built in step sequencer running in sync to the DAW. I've used a single reverb and two delay plugins for this track. There is no EQing or dynamic processing involved. All sounds were recorded directly into the audiointerface. Enj...
YAMAHA CS-60 - one song - one synth - live looping

Here you find my edited version of a live looping session with my Yamaha CS-60 and the Boss RC-505 MK2. Since the CS-60 can hold only one user preset plus the panel setttings, it's not that easy to change sounds on the fly. The song structure is quite simple. Everything you hear is basicly improvisation except for the chord progression which I wrote down beforehand. Enjoy the music! Bernd

No doubt the Oberheim sounds 'better'. NOT. Better synths don't exist.
Wirklich toll gemachter Test!
It’s your play not the instrument 🙏 amazing
A terribly limited synthesizer with a cumbersome user interface. A like for the demo, not for the instrument.
I’m building the new Tauntek poly61 mainboard right now. It has some new features like midi, a 2nd LFO, new waveforms for LFO and VCO. All parameters can be edited via midi cc. I’m probably going to make a video for it.
is there any modern synth that can be as good as the JP4 ? what about the plug in?
I can’t think of any hardware synth that comes close to the JP4, except for the Roland plugin/plugout recreations. The Cherry audio plugin is great as well and has the RE-201 tape delay/spring reverb emulation already built in.
Excellent. ❤
Is this a patch that comes with the synth or custom made?
The pad sound is part of the factory library (bank c), the lead sound is part of my „Synth King producer pack“
@@Bernd_BrueningThanks 👍
Great sounds and playing! do you have this patches for sale?
Most of them are sounds I've programmed for the factory presets (bank C). I've got a producer pack with further 70 presets for sale. www.particular-sound.de/downloads/behringer-ub-xa-producer-pack-presets/
Your first videos on the UB-Xa, when it was still in testing phase, are what put it on the radar for me. Once it came out I was a bit disappointed by some of the flaws it showed in the wild. Then Behringer released the so-called 2.0 firmware release, and it was this video that made me finally bite the bullet and get one. When it arrived it still had an older firmware version, and one of the 16 voices didn't behave as it should, so my initial impressions were met with some disappointment as well. Then I installed the new firmware, and loaded up your patch pack, which I had bought right after ordering the synth, and lo and behold - what a monster! Absolutely love it now. It might not have the exact same feel in the mids as the OB, but I'm expecting that to be easily solved in the mix with the use of some tasteful saturation. Thanks for your time and effort you put into this synth, I'm very happy I got one!
Thanks a lot!!
Fantastic playing ❤ How does the keybed and afyertouch feel in general? Because I really dislike the keyboard of my Deepmind.
Thank you. It’s of decent quality and plays nicely. Especially the aftertouch can be controlled very expressively.
@@Bernd_Bruening Thx, I haven't seen one in a shop to tryout. Maybe I should gamble and order.

The UB is good sounding poly synth and is in the ballpark of the OB. Great value, but overall the OB is better especially the filter and envelopes. Really the UB is 85 to 90%. If you were playing live and switched half way through most including me wouldn’t notice the difference. Maybe on a solo track with good headphones. I would be completely happy with it. At times I even prefer the UB.
I have a question. I bought the desktop version of UB. I have it MIDI'd to a Yamaha M8x which has PAT. I noticed only a very few voices do anything using the PAT and I'm wondering is this the case on the keyboard version? I know the M8x is sending PAT signals because the Brass patch works as expected & PAT transmission is indeed "ON". I went into the PAT controller options under "MOD" on the desktop and got a similar result that only a very few of the many MOD options have any affect using the PAT. Next I'll try the PolyBrute 12 and see if anything changes. I noticed the UA has MPE which might be even better.
You have to determine amount and destination of PAT in the mod matrix. I can only speak for my sounds (the first 58 sounds in bank C having SK as extender), but among these there are a few using PAT.
@@Bernd_Bruening I tested it on the PolyBrute12 and back to the M8x and I got the same result (The PB12 PAT is probably more responsive however the Montage is a 88 key piano action so it's not a synth style keybed) and if I wanted my patches to work using PAT I had to assign something useful to most of them myself. Yamaha did the same thing on the Montage, they really didn't have many presets actually using the PAT so I had to do it myself. Now the PolyBrute 12 uses PAT it extensively in comparison. Some say the Oherbeim is a players keyboard while the Arturia is more cinematic, w/pads and endless changes in timbre.

Great sounding synth
The biggest difference to me is that the filter feels smoother on the original when you have the resonance high. But in most circumstances they are ridiculously close.
OB seems to be a bit mellower and slower. Would be nice to know how OB sounded when it was new.
sounds pretty decent, just worry about the quality of anything made by Behringer
Hi...it d be very useful if you do one more comparison with some punchy sounds! This is where most synths fail.~

nice to see someone showcase how versatile, huge, and fat / warm the jup6 can get. Cold / thin? Yes, that too... But the bad rep it gets for only doing cold / thin sounds is such BS. Love mine.
Pretty much the same if not sounding better on the ubxa
could the behringer sound identical by equalizing?
@@plade5433 equalising is not necessary, just a bit of tweaking here and there and they will sound identically (or at least indistinguishable)
@@Bernd_Bruening Hello. But I also find that the Oberheim in sounds with more predominance of the filter and resonance has greater spatiality in the sound and the Behringer has a more focused or compressed sound. An EQ can't fix that.
That’s what I said. An EQ would alter the frequency spectrum which is identical with both synths. There are only marginal differences in terms of filter/resonance settings which need to be adjusted. That’s it.
@@Bernd_Bruening Thanks for sharing your experience. Another thing that blocks my desire for the Behringer is the quality of its keyboard, I don't read good things. Do you confirm? Thank you:)
@@plade5433 the keybed is of good quality and allows very expressive playing with its polyphonic aftertouch.

@@Bernd_Bruening great tot know. Thank You! Enjoy It!
I can't really describe what I'm missing with the UB-XA. Maybe it's...randomness. Everything is pristine with the UB-XA, while every keystroke on the OB-XA seems to sound a tiny bit different and so more lively.
@@Sycokay my primary goal was to make them sound alike, behaviour is another topic. There are various atrophy settings to achieve the randomness you mentioned in your comment.
The other has brand new components, the other over 40 years old
The Behringer captures the Oberheim sound very well and has numerous advantages. The OB has that little something about the tone though, a bit more bottom & bite and a little more wildness (also because of 40 year old components probably)

The UB doesn´t catch me, the Oberheim does. It has such a decent beautiful sound. It has soul...The sound of the UB is a bit crispier and brighter and I can´t descibe it but something is missing that the Oberheim has. Perhaps like the difference between a really good violin and a stradivari.
