Surfboard Demos
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 2 ส.ค. 2022
I started surfing in the late 1970's in Santa Monica, California. My home break was Sorrento Beach. I also surfed Bay Street (Dogtown), Malibu, Topanga and Zuma Beach. The surfboards I grew up riding were; Natural Progression, Con, Zephyr and Horizons West.

Looking good, rides nice on the mini swell!
Thanks for the video and pics buddy!
How does it compare to the seaside?
Completely different boards. The GB is like a mini longboard and my Seaside is a fish, 10 inches shorter.
Charging, and love the song too!
Thanks my friend. Your filming and photos made this one happen!👍
Great video, surfing, and music! @45 secs I got the photography sequence.
I used yesterday's photography sequence you shot on my newest video. Thanks my friend.👍

I think you mentioned you’re surfing Jacksonville. I’ve been visiting FL going back n forth every few months from Hawaii and haven’t seen waves like this yet. Its looks quite fun. Hoping to catch it like this soon. Is this near the pier?
A few miles away from the pier. 👍
@ North or south of the pier? I stay in Orlando on visits here and have only surfed a couple times at Cocoa and NSB and have yet to see anything like you’re surfing up there. Thanks.
@@derektsuji9520 Check out my other videos. This particular day was north of the pier. Today's peeling sand bar will be tomorrow's shore pound close-out, lol.
@ Thanks for the info🤙 I’ll do some surf checking next time I’m up that way.
@@derektsuji9520 👍
did this feel more like a longboard or funboard?
Paddles like a longboard, surfs like a mid-length👍
Very good surfing. Have you tried another fin setup? Thruster or twin?
I've surfed it as a single fin. Better pivot than a quad but not as fast.
Which construction type do you prefer HD fusion or tuflite?
I like both. Fusion is lighter but more prone to pressure dents and dings. Tuflite is very durable and has a bit more weight to it.
Did you notice a difference between the Dolphin Fin on your 72 Walden MM and the Trueames Greenough Volan on the latest review? Thanks again!
Yes, the Greenough fin felt a bit more responsive and was more stable when trimming.
Wow.. Greatly appreciated info! Was just about to buy my first midlengthlongboard groveller at 67yo x 6'3" x 180lbs....having surfed shortboards for 50 years...till I saw this video ...do you think there are noticeable disadvantages in reducing length below 6'4" when grovelling, particularly when you are tall? Are the 2" reduction in length incremements in model size possibly more detrimental when grovelling than the 3/4/5L reduction in volume for each smaller model size? Or vice versa...if u get my drift Sorry to make it sound so complicated but I am having trouble getting my head around so much volume for such a small board....ie. would you consider riding the 62 or 60 as a groveller and would there be any advantage Thanks...
Thank you for the kind words my friend. My two cents on grovelers is that they will never compete with longboards or mid-lengths even at equal volume. Too corky. Check my 7'4 Takayama Scorpion videos. Same volume as the 6'4 Sweet Potato but way more proportional. Wave count is the number one goal for me at my age. That's why I mainly surf the Walden 7'2 Mega Magic. Paddles like a longboard, surfs like a short board. Good luck!
How would you compare this to say the Modern Double Wide in the 7'4 size?
I've yet to ride a DW but my guess is it is similar.
Looks like the perfect combo between trim and rip.
It is. 👍
sick just a big boat to cruise
👍
you excel on this board
Thank you. It is my favorite.
@@surfboarddemos I had this board, now I have the addvance 7.2 62 liters. It has more manoeuvrability, but the mega magic is easier to ride, very forgiven board
@@Cif-ng3gs Haven't ridden an Addvance yet. Not a big fan of Timbertek.
@@surfboarddemos have you ever ridden the pyzel the log?
@@Cif-ng3gs I have not.
Which fins do ride?
(pictured at the start of the video) 7" True Ames Greenough 4-A Volan center fin with 3.5" Futures SB1 Fiberglass Sidebites👍
Sorry, it's a 6.5" Ames Greenough 4-A Volan center fin, not a 7"👍
@surfboarddemos which construction type do you prefer tuflite or fusion? And how do they compare?
@@michaelk.5706 I like both. Fusion is lighter but more prone to pressure dents and dings. Tuflite is very durable and has a bit more weight to it.
Which one do you like better the mega magic 7'2 or the Scorpion?
The Mega up to chest high, then the Scorpion chest and up.
Thank you for sharing this awesome video Which board would you prefer riding backside? 6'10 scorpion 2 (49.3L, 4+1) vs 6'10 greedy beaver (52.1L, 5 fut)
I'd go with the GB for backside because of the pintail. More responsive.
love the wide angle shots! you're absolutely flying!!!
👍
cool, can you duck dive it?
Yes, pretty easy.to duck dive.
Nice surfing & music by The Rusticators!
✌
Loved the music selection, brah
👍
i had the 9 ft aipa big brother sting and the 10 ft 2 custom big brother sting. the 9 ft was perfect it was 91 liters and maneuvered very well and caught every wave and can take off steep or farther back. the 10 ft two has 23 more liters and 26 more in in lenghth. I think there was a definite tradeoff in maneuvering but the board is fast, still takes off steep too. I only weigh 150 though. I think the 9 ft was perfect but the 10 ft might be a little too much volume for me. both are awesome boards. Haven't tried the toughlite yet though.
👍
I have a 9'6 and weigh about 165. I'm probably in the middle of what you're describing. Fun board to surf and catches lots of waves.
Great vid… jus wondering what was your all time best groveler board you have tried so far… is it this bake potato or another board ( scorpion, etc) ? I’m a beg / inter surfing in waist high softer waves.
The sweet potato was probably the best groveler but nothing beats a bigger board (mid length) in soft, mushy surf. Depending on your height and weight. The 6'4 sweet potato rips like a short board but the 7'2 Walden Mega, 7'4 Scorpion and the 8'0 Aipa Big Brother Sting will catch the most waves.👍
Try it as a 2+1 with slater endorfins , mine goes like a rocket.😜
👍
Savin up for one looks great 🤙

I had one of these…. Not really a fan of it, what did you think?
Love it! Catches anything.

I’m looking at buying a GB and wondering between a 6”8’ or 6”10’, I’m an average surfer, 90kg and 5”10’. Any chance you would be able to give me your thoughts on whether the 6”10’ would be duck dive-able and if there would be much loss performance wise going thr slightly larger board. Would you recommend either?
We are about the same size so I would go with the 6"10. I have no problem duck diving it and it is plenty maneuverable. Good luck!
Thanks heaps. Also, how does it go in large waves (head high or bit bigger)? Is it best in knee to waist?
@@gregoryhalls6626 Waist to head high is best for this board.
Just curious...do you have a favorite mid-length or funshape board on waist to chest high conditions? So many to choose from and I was wondering if you have a go to board you pick up more than most boards? Thanks for posting all these surf clips. Hope you keep surfing and posting!
Walden 7'2 Mega Magic is my go to for knee to chest high waves. Anything head high and up I will go with the Greedy Beaver or the 7'4 Takayama Scorpion.
@@surfboarddemos Thanks for the board info. I'm starting to experiment with longer boards and it's opened up a whole new surf style for me. I'll have to check out the Mega Magic. I recognize your surfing background. I surf in the same spots so hopefully I'll see you out in the line up one day.
@@chrisa2827 👍
Wondering if you could give me a comparison between the Greedy Beaver and the Sunday? To me, it looks like you can ride the GB from either the tail or from the center of the board and I'm wondering if you feel the Sunday has similar flexibility?
That's just my style. I trim to make sections on longer boards opposed to gyrating, so I move my feet closer to the nose. The Beaver has more pivot because of the tail and fin selection. The Sunday is more faster down the line. Hope that helps.
@@surfboarddemos Thanks a lot. Yeah, I prefer trimming on longer boards as well and wondered if the GB could do it well but you've shown it does. I appreciate your feedback - keep up the great content.

what do think of this board for a 5'10 215 lbs 25 year old beginner to learn on?
Good board to learn on. The 8'0 Mega Magic would be an even better choice for a beginner.
Nice music! Great movement at 58! Thanks for the video.
Thank you my friend.👍
How would you compare the Takayama in the pink to the CJ Nelson neo classic? Thanks,
Hard to compare as the CJ at 10 feet has more volume than the ITP's that I have demoed. The CJ has more of a domed deck and a little more rocker than the ITP Also the tails are different.👍
What fins were those? Great little demo vids by the way.
Futures Mayhem Evil Twins👍
@@surfboarddemos nice. I made the mistake of using a trailer when I threw those in mine. The Sunday really doesn’t love a 2+1 with that tail and all that vee, yet it works as a single. Loved it with the big Merrick keels. Gracias.
@@biff022 I thought it rode fine with 2+1. Just faster as a twin th-cam.com/video/fuwkcQBfJvg/w-d-xo.html
@@surfboarddemos gotcha. I meant as a twin plus one it defeated the purpose of the twin. Probably just a feel vs expectation thing because I’m sure that center plus bites would work.

Nice vid! What’s the difference between “volcanic repreve” and regular volcanic construction?
Volcanic Repreve Lamination As the world's leading recycled fiber made from ocean-bound plastic bottles, Repreve is a sustainable innovation enabling Firewire to build strength and flex control into each Volcanic shape while simultaneously preventing plastic bottles from entering our ocean playground.

Those days are better for 9'6" longboards....
Yes, log instead of HP 👍
Great videos, fun to watch and helpful for me since I can't compare surfboards easily! Question for you, if you have time to respond, as I’m having trouble sorting through the many opposing internet opinions. I’m interested in trying a shorter board, but I only surf pretty poor quality waves. Generally 4-6 second period, knee to waist high (occasionally chest), often with strong onshore wind. My current boards are a 9’6” noserider style longboard (23.5” wide, 88 litre), and a 7’10” funboard (22” wide, 57 liters). I’d say I’m approaching an intermediate level on these, I can easily position and catch waves on either board, trim back side and front side down the wave, and I can turn relatively well, although not especially sharp and I wouldn’t say I’m carving (very much anyways). I think a shorter/grovel type board might open up some options on the small, messy waves I surf and help with some progression. I’m 6’6”, 205lbs, 43 years old, and in reasonable shape (for having a desk job). Also, I’m surfing in very cold water most of the year, so generally in a 5/4 or 6/5 wetsuit. All that said, any board suggestions? I’m interested in the Sweet Potato, and was thinking of the 6’2”, but then I hear dire warnings about how you need to get the volume of grovel boards just right (generally warning not to go with too much volume or they are too floaty and don’t catch waves easily; this runs counter to everything else I read about volume/wave-catching). Anyways, thought I’d see what you think, or might recommend. Would the Sweet Potato be a good choice, and any sizing thoughts? Or would you recommend something else like a Modern Highline or maybe the Seaside (or something more fishy)? Also, I'm not sure if the higher volume in the Potato would help offset some of the shortness given that it's quite a drop in length from my 7'10", or if the amount of volume actually makes it harder to control when up and riding (i.e. the “bar of soap” opinions I’ve read). Sorry for the essay, but would appreciate your insight if you get a chance. Thanks!
If you are strongly looking for a performance groveler, I'd recommend the 6'4 sweet potato based on your weight, height, waves surfed and wetsuit thickness. Having said that, I'd also consider the 7'4 Takayama Scorpion (see my video demo). Same volume as the 6'4 Sweet Potato but more proportional and a surprisingly great all rounder. Best of luck!
@@surfboarddemos Great, thanks for replying! I'll look into the Takayama, I appreciate the advice!
@@johnnyk00l 👍
Do you feel that you could compete with longboards at 6’10? I’m looking for a mid length to take to a longboarder point break, but still want to be able to do a few turns.
I'd recommend the 7'2 Walden Mega Magic if you want to go toe to toe with lonboarders. Check my video demos of it. Thanks
Hey brother. Question: I just purchased the same board. 8'0" In the Pink. What fin were you using on this video? How many different fins have you used on that board? Mahalo
I'm using an FCS II Christenson 8" Longboard Single Fin (pictured at the beginning of the video). I've also ridden this board as a 2+1 with a 7" Modern fin and 2 Takayama 4.5" side bites. I prefer it with the Christenson single fin. Looser and faster.
Hey thanks for vid mate I'm in the process of saving for a greedy beaver. Did you ever test the TT model also? If so did you notice any difference? Thanks
Haven't ridden a TT Greedy yet. Hopefully I'll get a chance soon.👍
Thanks for fast response. I'd be interested to see if there is any difference in performance. Also unsure whether to get 6'8" or 6'10". I'm about 85kg and 5'11" so pretty average size. I'm definitely intermediate as a surfer. No worries if you don't know how to answer that. Thanks in advance
@@MatthewBeames Based on your size and ability, I'd recommend the 6'10.
@@MatthewBeames Hi there, just chiming in. I have a TT GB 6'8" and I quite like it actually. I'm 83kg and have surfed all my life, but I'm just average unless I'm surfing all the time. That said, I also have a CI Mid Twin 6'11" that I feel is a little better, but begin poly, it may not last as long. The GB floats more as well.
@@FoilWays thanks mate always good to get another opinion. I'm like you, average surfer for sure unless I'm surfing all the time. I just bought a 6'8 TT greedy beaver last week and so far love it! They didn't have any 6'10s in stock so I went for 6'8 . So far so good
When compared to the Sunday which one paddled the best and got into waves earlier?
It's close but I'd say the Sunday, only because it is longer with more volume.

@@Cif-ng3gs Just finished my 2nd session riding it as a twin and although it was more loose and skatey, I prefer it as a thruster.
I've had two Greedy Beavers and I have always preferred them as thrusters. The tail is a tight pin the thruster allows for better rotation on wave face. All the volume up front gives it all the drive it needs. I rode mine as a quad a few times and felt that this setup choked of a lot of performance.
