Thanks for posting this vintage video , so many racing enthusiasts that I know never knew this placed existed, not to mention racers like Bondurant, Gunther, Ken Miles , Dan Gurney, the list goes on, Legends !
Some classic racing in a great era - lovely selection of cars, many worth their weight in gold these days! They are not mincing about in the racing, virtually door handles, rubbing door handles in very close racing. The T-series MGs were a popular choice, along with the later MGA - drive to the circuit, slap on a race number with a paint brush, enjoy the race without hopefully damaging the car and then drive home! One other observation, have you noticed the people on the whole are not carrying any weight - not that long before fast food impacted our lives.
Great old films, but why the watermark obscuring everything.
so glad I could see this,I was obsessed with this as 5 yr old, all; my dads pals were doing this,I had sports cars ever since
Your archive is superb. I had never seen this video footage. Thank you for sharing it w public at large. I do believe this race was in 1955 however. Regards.
Thank you. You are correct, it is 1955, I just put what was on the reel into the title until I could verify. Life with multiple young children prevents any work from getting done.
Great series of home videos, is this from one person? Love the club racing stuff which you rarely see, lots of 500 home videos though, keep them coming!
@brooksobrien5290 Thanks, these are not from one person, they are some of the films that I have collected from all over.
This looks more like the rain delayed 1973 Indy 500 based on wing size and Bobby Unser's Eagle.
Thanks for the input.
This is 1972's Indianapolis "500". Bobby Unser was # 6 in that year. Also, Lloyd Ruby was driving # 5.
This is the 1972 race
Thanks for the info, anything past 1955 is outside of my wheelhouse. I'll do some verifying and correct the title. I just put what was on the reel as the title for this one and a couple others.
Jim Hall !
This "500" Indianapolis race was my second of 14 I attended (My first Indy "500" was 1965...the last one was 1994. In the '66 race, I was with family and friends on the main straight, literally at the end of the pit area. Got a fairly good view of that first lap accident, tires and all that includes A.J. Foyt climbing over the fence for safety some 200' from us. (I was 15...a few months shy of 16 years old) Famous Jimmy Clark of Scotland was my favorite to win that race...and he almost did as many Indy long time fans know. The other footage seems to be high banked Winchester, Indiana Speedway. Never have been there. Heard it was a thrill (and deadly) to watch. Nothing like old home movies to enjoy. Shows "a different view".
Thank you for posting this! I have been working on a CSX 2459 Lew Florence/Jim Bargelt tribute car for many years. There is precious little video footage of this Cobra available, and you have a few seconds of Lew here and there during the race, the Bridgehampton Double 500 from 1964, on September 20th! The best footage is at 9:39 with Lew flying by at speed. Much appreciated! There is a cool story behind Lew's appearance at this race and Shelby! I would love to get a copy of your footage without the DA overlay graphic. Unfortunately, the website where my build was being documented has gone into indefinite suspended animation, outside of my control. I plan to move the threads to another site in the not too distant future.
@georgejetson6230 send me an email at joeldriskill@hotmail.com and we can discuss getting you a copy without the watermark.
this looks like 1957 Palm Springs...
@elad1206 Definitely Santa Barbara. All the hagars say Santa Barbara. And if my memory serves correctly, the airport version of Palm Springs never went around the hangars.
@@thedriskillarchive min 3;05 seems like Palm Springs 1957 - with PH driving his winning Ferrari 121LM
@elad1206 So, on second look, it is a mix of both Santa Barbara and Palm Springs 1957. Good catch.
Great video!
Loved seeing the Alfas at the beginning of the race, 52 and 54. I had an exactly the same color 1959 Alfa in high school. I bought it from an air force major who raced it at Lime Rock in Connecticut. Mine had a big 73 on the sides and the hood. Paid $700 for it. G production class. Sure wish I still had it.
Outstanding video! Many thanks for taking us back to the days when it all started. Nice aerial views, as well.
Dad was their, doug of siebkens gave him a place to crash because he served his country in korea
So Cool. Thank You!
Might be in Florida, but that is not Sebring. Runway isn't wide enough.
It's the 1957 Sebring race
You are correct. I should have caught that, thank you.
Amazing film - what a record and especially for the youngsters with the XK 120. It also gives you a visual record of the popularity of the humble British sports car back then, especially the MG and Austin Healey. Though I did spot a Javelin not to mention a Nash Metropolitan, and of course we can't forget the Jaguars on the track, XK 120s etc.
classic ! that ferrrari driven by Astaire is a 500 Mondiale, very rare and special car
2:58 That has to be James Dean in his Porsche Super Speedster
@robertklein1316 James Dean died in 1955, this is 1956
sadly dean never raced the spyder on a track. he and rolf were only on the road that day to put on some break-in miles before its first race.
Thank you for providing this archival footage! I first attended the Santa Barbara Sports Car Races in 1957, and every year thereafter until the last race in 1969. In 1962 my father finally convinced my mother to attend with us. As luck would have it, the only fatality that ever occurred with the Santa Barbara Races happened that year and on our corner. My father filmed the tragedy with an 8 mm camera. I have the film, and at some point, need to transfer it to video and put it on TH-cam.
@gregorydahlen2103 Unfortunately, that was part of the deal with sportscar racing. Get it digitized and out there! I try not to show any deaths, but the rest of the film is worthy of sharing.
Bat man, the Batmobile, great memories, but I was on the East Coast. Nice Arnold-Bristol along with the Hotshot bringing up the rear.Maybe an Abarth being towed at the end.
@robertklein1316 Yep, an Abarth 207A, being towed by a VW!
That red number 66 car is the Alfa Romeo 1900 BAT 5 concept car probably worth $30 million today
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Amazing stuff. Ken Miles MG R1 at 3:57
Thanks much for posting. Outstanding that it is in color. Could you move your "Driskill Archive" to the bottom of the screen ? It really interferes with the film. Thanks.
Agreed, fantastic film but the text across the screen is super annoying. If you want to watermark it, just put a semi-opaque logo in the bottom corner, or have it disappear.
Thanks for posting!
Awesome. I was there as a 9 year old. Still have all the pics I took with my little kodak camera

Thanks for posting. Brings back so many memories and reminds me of what fun going to the races at Mid Ohio was back in the day. This footage is gold!
Thank you for showing this!! It’s wonderful!!
I hope I'm remembering it right. Mario's first time in a formula one car and first time at Watkins. Absolutely shredded them in practise. Journalists said it showed the current state of F1 at the time but heaped praise on Mario which he thoroughly deserved. Best racer ever.
Actually, Mario and Bobby Unser (BRM) had gone to Monza the month before, qualified for the Italian GP with Friday Practice times, then flew back to the US for a sprint car race on Saturday. They then flew back to Italy in time for the GP, only to be disqualified and not allowed to start because of the "Fangio rule:" in 1952 JMF ran a race in France, drove all night to make a race at Monza, and had a near-fatal crash. The organizers put it in the rule book that no one was allowed to compete at Monza if they had run a race elsewhere in the previous 24 hours. Now, back to your point: Mario ran such a good time in his first-ever F1 seat time at Monza that he was still well up on the grid after everyone else had another day to try to beat him . . . yes, awe-inspiring. To start P1 on his first complete F1 weekend was the stuff of legend.
So neat! Thank you for putting your videos out here!!
I used to own a car that run in 53 and 54 there.
Nice movie, I sub your channel, cheers Fabrizio - like 73
Should be 1975 (#96 Ray Elder started 4th that year which is where he looks to be in the video)
Doesn't look like Road America to me, perhaps Wilmot Hills ?
You are likely correct with Wilmont Hills. I went with what was labeled on the reel, after I couldn't match the cars running with the program for Wilmont. Programs aren't the best for accuracy, and I may have been looking at the wrong year.
I've copied the link for your site to the Autosport Nostalgia Forum so maybe one of the US members will be able to help. I'll post the specific video link and ask .
This is Zandvoort, Dutch Grand Prix. I’m really enjoying these old films. An amazing collection!
Quite the oversight on my part! Corrected now, thanks for keeping me honest.
No problem!
Cool, thanks
Remarkable footage. Nice shots of not only the F1 cars but some of the infield hardware, too. Porsches, Corvairs, an E-Type, and that lovely Oldsmobile.
JIM CLARK - By far the greatest driver ever - no doubt. He is and was the Best of the Best. No other driver in history until today was so superior as Clark. This man is the Olymp of driving - the Michelangelo of racing - a dynamic art at the highest level. So smooth, so precise, so fast....simply out of this world. One, who won in Spa by 5 minutes (!) in monsoon rain with only one hand at the wheel (!) because of gearbox trouble...One, who takes back a complete lap (!) in Monza and back into the lead... One, who took pole on the original 22,8 km Nürburgring track by 9 (!) seconds and more....One who won Indy by 2 whole (!) laps...For eternity and by lightyears unmatched in the sport. That`s just four examples of his mesmeric unique genius...
Ten thousand thumbs up!
In 1968 did the cars have those spoilers ? Hum....
www.motorsportimages.com/photos/?event_id=169981
Yes.
68 Was the last year of the tall spoilers. I remember the Brabham looking so cool because it had 2 spoilers
Looks like 1967 USRRC with Donohue in a Lola T70Mk3. Also the 2-litre 906's are a dead giveaway.
Thank you! This footage is definitely outside of my wheelhouse and I do appreciate the correction.
Hello, I'd like to use the footage from 8:01 to 8:20 in a video regarding Dan Gurney's spin, as part of a collection of crashes I'm compiling that were covered in The Fastlane's crash photos database. Would this be okay?
Yes, just shoot me a DM with any specific requests
Thanks for these great videos 👏👏👏✌
I was up in turn 4. 12 years old. I'd like to thank you for this footage.
