How to Fly Your Drone for Real Estate Photography!
มุมมอง 5K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
Flying your drone for profit and real estate photography can be daunting. It's one thing to know how to fly a drone, but once you add the element of targeted outcomes and photos that people will pay you for, things are a little different. In this video I go through my personal process for shooting real estate with my drone. I have a formula that I follow for almost all my shoots with some occas...
Why Did Your Drone Crash?

Have you ever had an accident that led to your drone crashing leaving you asking "why did my drone crash?" I hope to address some of the reasons drones sometimes seem to fall out of the sky. It is very rare that the technology fails completely on its own, very often it is due to user error. However, there are situations in which technology will fail you and leave you very disappointed. DJI Dron...

Mavic Pro vs. Air 2S. INSANE DIFFERENCE
มุมมอง 81ปีที่แล้ว
Comparing the Mavic Pro to the Air 2S with active track engaged. There’s not much to say besides the difference being obvious and astounding. DJI has come a long way over the years. How active track works is by selecting a subject and letting the drone fly itself autonomously to follow the predetermined subject. Camera quality of the Air 2S is unbelievable.

Unboxing the DJI Air 2S. Although this model is almost 2 years old already, it is still one of the best drones on the market for the money - especially when you go with a refurbished unit right off the DJI website. This is the fly more kit which comes with ND filters, extra batteries, carrying case, extra propellers, multi station charger and a few other nifty things.

What is your opinion on using 3rd party chargers, especially ones that allow usb c charging
Just subscribed and noticed no more uploads… damn, man get back to your daily routine with drones or cameras please! This is a great content! Looks like you did not believe in TH-cam or got busy, but believe me if you just capture your workflow with some tips you’re gonna get subscribers quickly
We were just asked to do a 450 acre farm (Realtor and Auctioneer aren't on the same page). Any tips on something that big? Trying to figure out how to get high enough (400 ft ceiling I know) to get the best shots of the land.
That is super tough. Honestly the biggest area I’ve ever done is 15 acres. Sounds like your shoot is going to have to be more of a features-focused approach. Going to be most likely impossible to capture the whole property in the same shots. A fun idea you could look into though is something called Drone Deploy. Lets you autonomously build 3D maps of a structure/property. You draw the outline and the drone automatically flies a path and captures straight down images every so often and stitches them together for an interactive map. They have a free 2 week trial and it’s very fun to mess around with.
@Eloc626 thanks for the information, I'll try to remember to tag you in the video.
Question. How did you keep line of sight? Being inside of the vehicle should be difficult.
Thanks for sharing, interested to know why you wouldn't just get out of the car rather than worry about hitting a tree?
I work in Florida and do about 4-5 properties a day. Most of the time it’s 95° and very humid and I’m trying to stay out of the heat as long as possible.
Thanks for going through and stating and modeling each shot you take. I just passed my 107 exam 2 weeks ago and am looking into getting into this field. The reason I am checking out these videos is to get an idea of what shots would be good when doing real estate - and you made it clear and let me know. Thanks!
My only comment is about your final photos. You seem to be using some HDR technic. It's nice to get some details on the shadows under a strong sun, but if you go too much, it makes the photos unnatural and flat
Agreed. In this video I was still outsourcing my edits to other people but I’ve since started doing them myself. I’ve noticed the editors I use sometimes return a very flat or gray image
@@Eloc626I would LOVE to see how you’re editing now! I’m decent with the photography but color grading has been so confusing to me. Do you have any content like that?
@@loganweinstein At this point I have had a ton of practice editing my own aerials! I'll start working on a video of my process!
@@Eloc626 you rock! Would love to see that, thanks man
Nice video! Do you have any editing tips?
Off-topic but what camera are you shooting with? The quality is really good.
Just an iPhone 15 surprisingly! These cameras just keep getting better and better.
How can you have line of site sitting in your car?
I did see you explain it at the end of your video, but hard to imagine. I always fly from outside my vehicle to maintain line of site and have to move around a lot.
There may be times where the roof of the car technically blocks my visual but all I’d need to do is step out while remaining essentially in the same exact spot. I interpret that visual line of sight rule more so that you just need to be able to see the drone at a seconds notice if you needed to
Always have extra cards in your bag so you have one incase your card is full, or you forget it, or if it fails.
I have the same severe illness Droneitis 😂
I’m new to this DJI hobby and I would like to do get my part107 license at one point. I just ordered the mini 3 fly more combo didn’t wanted to spend a lot just because if these drones get banned I rather loose $650 instead of $900 to $1300 so is the mini 3 a good drone for a startup real estate photography. TIA
Hi Mario, thanks for the question. The mini 3 is a more than capable drone. You can take fantastic pictures with it for real estate photography. It was probably a good move to save yourself a few hundred dollars just in case this DJI ban does happen after all.
I watched your part 107 prep video a couple months ago and got my card in the mail yesterday! Great video
Awesome! Congratulations. And thanks for the support
That looks like Cape Coral FL with all the canals. What kind of drone is that?
You’re not that far off! Just on the opposite coast. I’m using a DJI Air 2S
Congrats, Pilot, and thanks for the insight!
Taking mine tomorrow at 1:00.
How did it go??
@@Eloc626got an 85! I was stoked and after watching this and the videos you linked, going over sectional charts and reviewing weather that morning, I wasn’t nervous anymore. 🫡
What software do you use for editing?
I use photomatix to merge the brackets. Then play with the vibrancy and colors in Lightroom. If anything needs to be removed I’ll move the photo over to photoshop but it’s not every time.
why so many shots 50 feet apart in height? no way the realtor uses 4 photos from each angle just 50 feet apart each photo?
They rarely use every photo but every realtor has different preferences with what they’re trying to show with aerial photos. Some want to emphasize the surrounding area or a specific geographic feature and some just want to see the house from above. I take a bunch just so they have everything they could need
@@Eloc626 ahhh well I pay editors to edit my photos so id be losing money taking that many shots 50 feet apart cause the rest of the photos would be edited for nothing if I gave them 4 options from each angle
🙏🏻Best alternative to DJI Air 3 (if US ban takes place)?
Probably the Autel Evo II from what I’ve heard. One of my coworkers flies it every day and he actually chooses it over the Mavic 2 that he has almost always.
Wow! This was amazing. Doing it without coming out of the vehicle and looking at the drone.
Really appreciate your content. Keep up the good work and thank you.
I’ve been serious with a fishing TH-cam channel for about a year and a half and just starting to get into real estate photography. Thankfully I got experience with my drone and editing because of the TH-cam stuff but your videos definitely help me learn how to do photos of homes.
Thanks a lot! I’m glad the videos have helped. Good luck with your channel too!
I had a incident with my DJI mini 4 pro. When i was going to test it in my home where there's plenty of room in the living room, "i was going to just test hover" but i did a normal take off, it went up about 3-4' and i bumped it up a pinch, and it uncontrollably SHOT up and slammed into the ceiling and on its own, then shot forward and slammed against the wall and broke both front arm hinges and 4 of the 8 propellers in random spots, and popped the gimble rubber support off. I can only come to conclusion that the obstacle avoidance didn't know what to do in a room and went haywire trying to do what its supposed to do and just couldn't go anywhere. But i just bought all new blades and new front axis arm hinges and carefully put the gimble rubber back into place, and its was GOOD to go without any issues and work perfect again. The arm hinges are super easy to replace but require a tiny torques head. SO note to share, avoid in-house take offs at all costs, Even for a simple take off and hover.
Will my dji mini 4 pro take pics like the ones you take? Having some issues with taking good pics.
Yes, you could actually potentially take even better photos. I use bracketed photos which the mini 4 pro can take. I have mine set to 5 and then I blend them together with an app called photomatix - I’m sure there are free ones though.
Great video, how do you get your clients?
Thanks! I was lucky enough to find an existing real estate photography company that had an infrastructure in place and has been marketing themselves for 15 years. They have a massive network of realtors they work with and set me up with appointments. I didn’t have much success building my own network before joining this company
Thanks for making this video, Cole. I'll update you when I take my test in the immediate future and post whatever questions I remember to pay it forward.
Great! Good luck on your exam. Looking forward to hearing about it.
I had been watching several of your videos and appreciate the content you provide as you are a very skilled drone pilot with better experience than many others. You also work within my state of residency in addition so thank you.
I passed my test today, got an 80%. I was def stressing because I took a course back in November and all the stuff I was studying wasn’t really on the test, they def re-phrased a lot of the questions. I would say maybe 3-5 questions were exactly worded on my quizzes. About 25% of the test was sectional charts, a lot of remote id questions and yeah I would agree with William_ns that alot of stuff on TH-cam is outdated but still helped a little.
Congrats! Most of the questions always seem like they’re asked in such a different way when you get to the actual test. I felt the same way. Knowing the sectional chart well gets you so many free questions though since they ask so many on it.
Nice video ! Nice to be able to see the process and your thought process
Thanks! Hope you found it helpful.
I just received my 107 FAA license in the mail this past week and my commercial drone that I will be using that I am getting familiar with before promoting heavy. My last name is well known here in parts of Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina with 5 star restaurants (18 in total) since 1948 (74 years and still going strong, and a large mechanic shop where my cousin works out of that's a local pro race car driver. Cousin that's a Real Estate agent and another real estate agency that is under the family's last name. I am not promoting big time just yet until I feel more comfortable and videos like yours does help. I placed a 46 second advertisement video up on TH-cam to send over the clickable link when ready to agents everywhere and this week coming I will have a website out as well and I have a great video editor also.I Can't wait to start moving things along but with the last name already in these professional businesses, I am also cautious on marketing to hard at one time as well. I am not sure what part of Florida you are in, however I am out of the Tampa Bay area.
That’s awesome! I hope it all goes well. Sounds like you have plenty of interesting opportunities to experiment and get some really good shots. I’m over in West Palm Beach - I’ve been meaning to visit Tampa for a while now.
Trying to figure out which drone you are flying. Mavic 3? Great shots and thanks for sharing!
Thanks for your comment! In this video I’m flying an Air 2S
@@Eloc626 Hi, which drone would be the next step down in price and still give me a great learning experience? I am passionate about learning and doing home photography and video.
Any of the new Mini series drones have great cameras these days. I’d look into the Mini 3/3 Pro for a slight decrease in price but still an awesome camera
Never underestimate the power of a leather belt or a wooden spoon.
Thanks for Your reply! I have not spent any time checking the resolution of the different cameras in still pictures but I recognize the figure 48M for a camera or two. Flying and recording don't call for the same artistic taste that the engineer in me doesn't have.... Living almost next door to the broker I can accept doing a second flight still picturing selected angles. A demo flight recording of the block I live will be made for free to see what response I get. She's been selling numerous of apartments here.
Great video!!
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it

VERY helpful. Great video!
@@Frisbeegrl11 Thank you for the feedback! Very happy to hear that it was helpful
Looking and listening to Your experienced advice. Being an amateur i photographing with a year of drone flying experience an estate agent was contacted, and she was interested. She sold 2 properties for me and sold 2 properties to me. In other words, a good contact. You use still pictures. My idea, not being a real photographer, was fly around the property making live recordings from which still pictures can be cut out. Every angle will be there. 4K 60 is available. For the Mini 3 PRO a wide angle lens is available. The Mavic 3 PRO, standard cameras. What's Your comment to my approach?
So it’s not a bad idea at all and can definitely be useful depending on your goals. The issues I might see with that in my line of work is that even the most clear still frame from a 4K video is only equivalent to 8.3 megapixels. Where as regular stills with my Air 2S are 20 megapixels and even up to 48 megapixels on the Air 2. Additionally, taking stills from a video prevents you from taking bracketed shots which you need to create an HDR image. So at the end of the day, if you don’t need a super high quality still photo and have no intention of creating an HDR, I think it’s a great idea.
Having just recently passed the Part 107 test, I am keen to explore how to start earning money with my drone. Real estate pictures seems a good field to explore. I am curious though how you are able to fly from your car without keeping your drone in your line of sight. Can you obtain a waiver for this?
Usually I’ll keep my sunroof open and I park close to the property that I’m shooting. None of the shots require me to fly too far away from the house so the only time the drone is out of sight is when it’s temporarily behind a tree or momentarily behind the house for the last picture.
Thanks for the clarification. I have been nervous flying over and around my house and in class G airspace. When I do, it is usually below 50 feet, which I now realize is problematic, as noted by another comment in this thread. Being new to drone flying, I am victim of the psychological attribute that associates the ground with safety. Flying low is therefore less stressful that flying high. This feature makes it more likely to fly into obstacles, and for people on the ground to notice the drone and believe that they are being spied upon. It is similar to the psychological attribute that leads novices to reach for the shore when a kayak tips that way, when the safer behavior would be to lean the other way, away from the shore, to bring the kayak back into balance. Making sure that the compass and IMU are calibrated ensures that the drone icon on the screen correctly orients the PIC to the direction of flight of the drone. I had this problem the other day when I was not able to orient the drone relative to home, but thankfully had the drone in my line of sight and flew it back through trial and error. Fortunately, I was in a very large park with no tall obstacle in sight. Lesson learned: a considerable amount of flying experience and expertise goes into making a simple aerial video safely. @@Eloc626
Great video, thanks for sharing!! Curious, when blending the photos for finished product, are you using hdr auto merge or are you hand blending them?
Glad you liked it! Thanks for the question. I use an app called Photomatix with one of their blending presets and then touch them up in lightroom (then photoshop if necessary). I’m posting another real estate shoot walkthrough tomorrow and the pics came out even better so stay tuned for that one! I'll also be going over some topics I missed here.
@@Eloc626 awesome!! Thank you!! Will be waiting to see tomorrows vid!!
Your car has a Drone flight take off window ?
lol oh yes. I paid extra for that 😂
That's an awesome shoot. Not to tell you how to do your job, but I've would have went around that tree on your first shot and see what that would have looked like before taking that shot. Thanks for sharing.
I definitely see what you mean. I probably should have at least compared which of the two low shots would have looked better. The one I chose to take may have made the driveway look unnaturally big
Nothing is as good. I’m flying mine until it’s confiscated
Just curious, looks like you have a DJI Mavic. It's cool that you shoot from your car but don't you need go through the calibration process before launch?
I use an Air 2S. I believe I’ve only had to calibrate it once after I got it. For whatever reason they hold their initial calibration settings really well.
Do you use any landmarks at all to your drone videos at all or only at a client's request?
Instead of letting these hack partisan politicians use banning DJI drones to further their sham political careers, actively convince them to change their minds. If they won’t, use your time and money to recruit and elect sensible candidates to defeat them.
What's funny about that is that at least one of the representatives trying to push the bill through is Florida where I live, so I actually could have some influence on the course of events
I lost my Air 2S on my vacation last summer. I didn’t thoroughly scout the area I was flying in and completely lost my drone to a Georgia pine tree on the side of a mountain. I completely misjudged the tallness of the trees on a non level mountainside. My Air 2S clipped a branch on its side and I never recovered it. I couldn’t get to the crash site because it was a forested area and it still might be a 100 feet up in that tree. A very expensive lesson learned. There is a moment of joy after tragedy for my drone life because with this year’s tax return I just purchased an Air 3 that I received last week. I do know now what NOT to do. Great job. Thanks for letting me share my story and you got a new subscriber.
Ugh, after going through a crash, I really empathize with other crash stories - especially when you can't even recover the drone. Very glad to hear that you were able to get a replacement recently. And a very capable replacement at that. Enjoy the Air 3 and thanks for the subscription!
The props are so important .I clipped a small bush and i inspected them when i got home and one had a hairline crack in it .I replaced the props with new ones .👍
Definitely a good call. After my incident I’ve considered replacing them yearly no matter what they look like. It’s not like they cost that much anyway
Hey, thanks for the video. I fly a DJI mavic 3Thermal drone and you are right that preflight check is important and can avert a lot of unpleasant situations. Good luck Robert
Awesome video bro. Don't mind that guy up top. Ain't nobody about to do all that. The people that mess it up is people that use drones to peak in people houses and fly like 20ft over people head just being idiots. Also didn't take enough practice time flying in open lots just to get the hang of it. Most of that use common sense are fine
Or the guy criticizing I should say
Thanks for the support man! It means a lot. Totally agree with you. There’s too many people with drones to enforce any of the current rules, not that I recommend breaking them at all because the fines can be pretty hefty if you were to ever get caught sadly
My propeller cracked by the screws dropped into lazy river lol.
Ouch, not a good feeling
Latest firmware...... Both yes, and no! If You're confident with the system You have, think about keeping it. You never know what surprices come in an update. I think about the 120 - 500 maximum for the Mini drones. I'll not tolerate loosing the plus 120 meter limit.
Thats a good point, I actually extend that same feeling to any type of software actually. Sometimes they roll something out and it makes it objectively worse lol
@@Eloc626 I wish I could read what changes there are in the updates. One TH-camr told about an Android app doing it but the app doesn't download to any of my Samsung devices.
