    The hypocrisy of the northern oligarchy demonstrated at aburi in the 1960s through Gowon is exactly what is playing out today. When an agreement was reached to move the country forward out of danger then, was politicised unnecessarily resulting in an avoidable civil war in which millions of human lives were lost on both sides. Today the same thing is gradually playing out in.unnecessarily where president Buhari is declaring IPOB a terrorist group whereas the terrorists in the northwest & northeast are declared as bandits. 2ndly anti-grazing law which was signed by the southern governors is being opposed by President Buhari. 3rdly the federal government kidnapping of Kanu and Igboho who are mere agitators of injustice while the terrorists and their sponsors in the north are being overlooked by President Buhari's government, this is how it starts, I hope somebody is taking note.

    The long and short of Aburi is that neither party had any legitimate authority to speak for anyone. It was an excercise in futility. And, since neither side had any legitimate authority, there was no incentive to uphold it. In hindsight, I wonder how things may have turned out, if Ojukwu went back and immediately held elections, even if just for the legislative, and given himself some sort of legitimacy to speak for and make war on behalf of the people of Biafra.

    I read Nigeria's history and have surmised my understanding. Ojukwu as a leader was faced with 2 difficult choices, remain in Nigeria or leave. None of these decisions were easy but he chose the latter. Gowon was also in a tight corner as regards keeping the country together, as we may not have all the variables, but ultimately, based on my little knowledge, I have not been truly convinced that the war was justified. The 2 of them should have sort diplomatic solutions rather than all-out war.

    • @charlesking7331
      @charlesking7331 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly, Aburi meeting should have not be a reason for civil war if not ego, desperation and selfish interest for power. The country is still in a stable condition that time. They two idiots are just showing muscle without thinking of the consequences that will follow their after especially the visionless, hopeless governor of the then eastern region colonel Ojukwu who dragged his people to unprepared and unplanned war for his selfish interest to remain in power. Today his Ibo people is still suffering from adversary of that civil war and relegated to fourth class citizens of the country Nigeria which Igbos championed for their independence.

Watch the interview granted to one of top Ibo civil servants of that era Mr. Ben Enweonwu around January 15th, 1970 just 3 days after the civil war. You also go and watch public interview in the street of Lagos from January 1970 immediately after the civil war then you will heard peoples on ground honest assessment of that senseless war of shame by the so called Eastern Biafra led by the selfish Ojukwu in the expense of the less privileged Ibos and Easterners.

    The facts were all there and ARE still clear enough even for the blind to see vividly. The British overlords/neocolonists, working through the instrumentality of, and in collusion with, so-called "super-permanent secretaries", weighed in on Mr Yakuprevaricating Jackpot Gowontler to completely reject what he fully agreed to at Aburi. Gowontler thereafter accused Ojukwu of having been "better prepared" than the rest for the Supreme Council meeting, to which Ojukwu upbraided him for such unstatesman-like statement when the country's very life was on the line. (Did Gowontler think that they were going to Aburi for a tea party? Ojukwu wondered) It was equally the duplicitous British that before these unfolding events had turned Jackpot Gowontler away from his original rebel mission of declaring "Arewa Republic". "There's no basis for unity," declared the original rebel Gowontler, the latter-day apostle of G.o.w.o.N (Go on with "one" Nigeria). Gowontler, the second son of a roving Christian evangelist Pa Yohanna Gowon, then blessed Allah, "who in his infinite wisdom has restored power back to the North". The oil war of genocide was brought about by Yakuprevaricating Jackpot Gowontler in answering to the will of his Fulani masters. 'nuff said.

In fact, it was only in recent years that he admitted that after a paternity test confirmed that. He hated Igbos but went about sleeping with an Igbo woman and even lied to her by promising to marry her. he is even lying to himself and to God by going about pretending that he is praying for Nigeria's unity.

The Council agreed that the Ad Hoc Committee on the constitutional future of the country should be resumed as soon as practicable and that the unanimous recommendations of the committee in September 1966, will be considered by the Supreme Military Council at a later meeting. The Council unanimously agreed that future meetings of the Council should be held in Nigeria at a venue to be announced later.
