i’m at the climax of my own similarly unhinged “becoming a one piece fan” journey, in which i am now a one piece fan, so i really enjoyed your story. feeling very validated in my one piece route: watched random east blue saga episodes as a kid in the 00’s and shipped zoro and sanji before i even knew what shipping was, or what even being gay was or knowing i was also queer > absorbed sporadic one piece context through osmosis/fan content (and whatever the opposite of context is with none piece/one piece abridged) > lasted roughly 20 years (give or take) telling myself that while i’m mentally ill, i’m not so mentally ill that i would attempt the sheer amount of episodes/chapters it would take to ever get into one piece let alone even catch up > got diagnosed with adhd in my late 20’s and discovered my hyperfixation tendencies along with how often they are driven by my (chaotic) bisexual (disaster) interests > watched the one piece live action because zoro was hot, delighted that nami was also hot, devastated to find that i fell for the bait and was invested in the characters and story (the final nail in the coffin lbr it was just a matter of time after that) > was reminded of my zosan roots when sanji showed up in the live action and he and zoro started bickering > beamed directly to the zoro/sanji tag on ao3, absorbed so much zosan directly into my bloodstream > started watching the anime realised i was both done for and absolutely hyperfixating on the series as a whole when i zoomed through east blue saga at a pace i have not been able to achieve in years (i used to keep up anime seasonally and now i struggle to watch things i’m even interested in) and kept going into unfamiliar territory, i’m currently in the back end of alabasta saga/second half of alabasta arc. the one piece live action was the nail in the coffin, but i think the actual mvp in the case of watching the anime is me being a gintama fan. i can’t explain it succinctly but i know in my heart of hearts if i hadn’t gotten into gintama first, i would never have been able to fully appreciate one piece.

For some reason Sanji has this weird aura that scratches the itch in every women’s brain. That’s why most Sanji fans are women. You know what the funny thing is, when I was in Japan two days ago we went to Ikebukuro, my japanese friend specifically said that most anime shops there are aimed towards women, and then she showed me all of these One Piece merch in Ikebukuro Animate full of Sanji and Law, and she said « See? for women. If you want to find merch of Nami, Robin, and Zoro you go to Animate Akihabara. »

I feel bad though because it set him up to think one piece was full of action and fights like that instead of all the lore, but it's where I got hooked because I needed to understand why they were so dead serious about friendship😂

One Piece having recaps in beginning of every episode during arcs that came out during 2010's is actually a good thing for people who start watching One Piece from the middle and so on. So... yeah, there's no shame in beginning watching from the middle (Because you can still watch beginning later on), i mean, when i was a kid, almost all anime i watched from the middle XD

You know, I others would probably poke fun at getting into a series because of BL shipping and fanfiction... But honestly, I've gotten into other series from worse. Shine on, you awesome star!

He has to be the most overrated of them all. He's good looking sure but his acting in the show was so monotone. Early Zoro WAS NOT like that. He had WAY more personality. I see nothing impressive about having a poker face all the time and regurgitating 'cool' lines with literally no facial expression.

Hello, nakama! 💜 I enjoyed your One Piece journey. Mine's quite short. A good and trusted anime comrade told me, "watch OP. It's my favorite." And my mind was blown. We consumed anime like it's bfast, lunch, and dinner. How did he have a favorite after all these years?! All of a sudden! And all i knew was that OP's about pirates and had 1k+ episodes. I was afraid! And then i watched a few episodes and was having a hard time with the old animation style. So i stopped. I stopped at ep13 i think. Until i quit my job last year and thought, "well now i have time." And for 4 months straight, i went on vacations - to the beach, to tokyo, osaka, and hokkaido, and dubai - but i watched it everywhere. Every chance i got. I couldn't stop! I sent my friend thousands of screenshots of my supposedly favorite scene or line or art... hahahaha i didn't watch any other thing for almost half a year (except AoT's real finale). And now i'm on the weekly crew. And it's still not enough. Also, i believe luffy and sanji are my faves. I love sanji so much. 🥹

Damn girls that is some dedication! It took me a month to catch up to One Piece too, but i only had a little over 500 episodes to watch and i was a no life shut in at the time.

I follow this one artist, and they draw such amazing One Piece art and are such a ZoLu shipper almost every time I click on their IG story. It's them shipping the hell out of those two. It's nice to hear another person voicing their ships. I'm not much of a shipper. But I enjoy seeing how people are when they talk about their favorite characters. Welcome aboard and onto Egghead!!! how complicated xD but Sanji is the BOY :D but i don't agree with the random One Piece start , because you must start from the beginning, the one piece world is so damn complicated, without episode 1 you understand nothing later on ngl ^^'. But in the end it still kinda worked so i'm happy ;P. BUt you won't experience the full one piece spirirt i guess ^^'

CACKLING my ass off over this. Tbh I kinda get it. First REAL exposure to One Piece was my dad watching the anime in the living room. It seemed annoying but also… frustratingly attention grabbing. I kept finding myself sitting there watching with him. He eventually got me to watch OPLA, and while I was hooked from the start (silly people doing silly things with a banger soundtrack, what else can I ask for?) what got be FUCKED was Zoro relationship with, not Sanji, but with Nami. Like I IMMEDIATELY clocked in both of them as gay so I ended up interpreting all of their interactions as a weird wlw/mlm solidarity and I am. A sucker for a good queer found family dynamic. Still pretty sure that I could’ve dodged MONTHS of hyperfixation if Nami and Zoro just didn’t radiate such intense Homosexual energy.

I started watching after the live action too, I was curious to know how faithful OPLA was to the anime. After East Blue saga I thought I'd watch ahead a little to see where the LA would go next, but Drum Island sucked me in completely.

Yo I've never heard anyone say "I got into the series because of Mackenyu." I'm pretty sure a lot of his fans did but I've never heard anyone admit it 😂. Nor have I've heard anyone stay because of Sanji. Your experience was unique 😂

In my case, I started watching One Piece live because of the hype,plus I kept seeing Mackenyu on my feed during the OPLA release,and I found him attractive. I got curious and started watching and became his fan. Since I loved Mackenyu and Zoro's character, I started getting curious of the anime. I was hesitant to start the anime at first, but ended jumping into it anyway. Now, I'm over the 1000th episode and I still love and obsessed with Zoro. 😂
