1. Dick Barton (1979)
มุมมอง 5811 หลายเดือนก่อน
Today your host Gray talks about Dick Barton: Special Agent from Southern Television. First broadcast in 1979. Let me know what you think of Dick!
I distinctly remember this being shown 'late night' (10:30 - 11:00-ish) on New Zealand television back in about 1973 or 1974. I don't think it was wildly successful, but New Zealand television wasn't particularly good back then - Coronation Street was 5 YEARS behind the episodes shown in the UK. It's not particularly good now, far too woke, with DEI hires all over the place, but these are the times in which we live!
tomorrow people bro
The X Files connection is possibly a good one: but The Omega Factor sounds more like it influenced the X-Files spin-off, Millennium. AND like a cross between Doom Watch and The Stone Tape. (Apparently, some real world paranormal researchers take the Stone Tape seriously: and feel it to be a good explanation for ghosts)
I remember this from years ago. It was excellent. I must try and hunt it down and watch it again.
I don't know if you've managed to see it yet but i just spotted it's still on the iPlayer!
@@TheTelevisionShow Thanks very much for getting back to me with that. All the best.
Wasn’t Sapphire and Steel’s last Adventure aired by a different ITV company …
Don’t know
As I recall … ? Brett’s wife died when he was recording some of the earlier episodes: it’s supposed to have given his performance a certain amount of … *intensity*. (‘Intensity’ is possibly the best choice of word, I think: where’s probably very few words to describe the situation)
Is it just me … or does Prentice Hancock only get cast if you need a chap with a moustache … ? Unless you need a Thal without a moustache … ?
So you’re saying Hancock is always cast with a moustache unless they cast him without a moustache. I think you’re probably correct, there. 🤔
It’s a Le Carré adaption, you say … ? That should make it interestingly murky. I don’t know about autobiographical, though. I SEEM to recall seeing Dame Stella Rimington - or possibly Dame Eliza Mannington Buller - being interviewed about spy fiction: and saying that Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy had the folks at 6, *worried*. It seemed Le Carré had revealed a little too much … (I have to admit, Le Carré introducing the term ‘reptile fund’, to the public … is something I’m grateful for. It seemed a lot more accurate than ‘slush fund’ or ‘black funds’)
Le Carre has often said it was autobiographical and a lot of the characters are representations of good real life family/friends/colleagues. You must’ve missed that bit. He was in the intelligence game before he started writing so he did know what he was talking about, though so was Fleming, who decided to write fantasy. You’ll recall Thatcher panic at Spycatcher, I’d expect? That was factual so more worrying. TTSS was published at least 10 years before Stella Rimington so it was probably a different book you’re thinking of. Maybe even A Perfect Spy?
Oh btw, there’s a Le Carre interview on AppleTV, called The Pigeon Tunnel.
Oh, ta, @@TheTelevisionShow I’ll see what I can see …
Interesting to see Anthony Ainley playing something OTHER than the Master! (I mentioned him to a couple of my quiz regulars, back in January. It seems his father, Henry, was a noted actor in his day. There’s even a photo of Ainley Sr on Henry’s Wikipedia entry: and the resemblance is noticeable.) Now … did Roger Lloyd-Pack call anyone ‘Dave’ … ?
I’m tempted to say “I love Dick”. But that would; A. Be a lie, as I never saw it. B. Sound a bit rude!!!!!!!! At any rate I never saw the show: but know my late Uncle Brian was a fan of the original series. I do know that theme tune, though. I can remember hearing The Devil’s Gallop a few times as a youngster, but I’m blowed if I can remember *where* … ! I’m also feel that the music for the Fifteenth Doctor puts me in mind of it: whether that’s deliberate, I don’t know.
It was used in lots of shows. Monty Python, the Goodies, Dad’s Army. Look up the Spanish Inquisition sketch
Yes, I know about the Spanish Inquisition, @@TheTelevisionShow that’s possibly one of the places I heard it. Or more likely The Goodies!
@@MrCuddy2977 I know you know it, I think it’s in there, which you don’t know. If that’s where it is. In which case you wouldn’t know it cos it’s wrong.
I missed a sentence out of that reply. Nobody expects me to miss a sentence out. Actually they probably do…
Tactfully … … … … @@TheTelevisionShow
