Dual rectifier Rev F Preamp test.
I built a dual rectifier Rev F preamp after studying my own’s circuit.
This is a true recreation from the INPUT to the SEND jack, with both the red and orange faithfully represented.
I omitted the clean channel and therefore all the complicated switching.
Running this into my Triple Rectifier (rev g) RETURN JACK to hear the subtle and nuance similarities and differences.
NOTE, the switch from ORANGE to RED adds or subtracts a 180p capacitor in parallel with a 500p to get from 500p for ORANGE, and 680p for RED.
The only other difference I could find between the two channels is the presence circuit.
The RED presence is perfect, but to recreate ORANGE, its potentiometer must be all the way up to replicate the jump to ground that the ORANGE channel has.
It sounds amazing and is indistinguishable to my F, but this video is to demonstrate F to G with the flick of a switch and turn of a dial.

Taking a break from building and repairing tube amps to demonstrate how to do a simple mod. I love dual rectifiers but I personally prefer a series loop over a parallel one. This mod still allows the loop to be switched on and off between the channels. BUT when on there must be at least a 1/4” cable between the send and return if no fx are attached. At a minimum it lets the fx tube to be an add...

I finished this build 1/24 and thought I’d share it with the world. Fantastic tone and volume.

That sounded awesome! One question. What you are saying is, whether your stock Rev G or your preamp Ref F, alas you are using the Orange channel, they need to have presence all the way up to make it sound right rather than muffled and dark, right? Reason im asking is I am seeing the same situation in my Rev G for orange channel. (Presence really needs to be cranked up to sound right)

@@crankyourampupalltheway I was saying that the red channel of both has its own presence control in the tone stack rather than in the negative feedback loop because in the red channel the loop is disconnected. In the orange channel the negative feedback is connected and mesa put the presence for orange at the end of the loop ( the way most amps do) But your assessment is normal. The presence control of the orange channel doesn’t really kick in unless turned up a lot. Mine is typically 3/4 the way up always 👌🏾

Great question! Yes. The ability to bypass the loop via the controls for such in the back of the amp are left intact. The only difference between the series fx loop of older dual rectos, and the newer parallel is the additional attachment of the knob I rendered useless in this video. The tones with or without the loop is unchanged after the mod, so both options are still available

Great video! Straight forward and well demonstrated. You say the loop is still able to be bypassed in your description, but does that original bypassed-loop tone character remain after the mod? These amps lose a bit of their low end once the loop is active so having that original tone still available when you don't need the loop is important.

Could you build a rev C rack mount? With a depth and feedback control? With the rectifer tube?

Are you actively building clones? I’ve been looking for a Rev G type clone with red/orange with changeable vint/modern modes.

From what I understand, isn't the Dual Rectifier very similar to a Soldano circuit? I ask because I'm trying to get the "Recto" sound without actually buying a Mesa because of the poor build quality Mesa's are known for. What would you recommend: modify an existing Soldano SLO 100 to rev "F" or commission a clone from scratch? Thanks, I'll be sure to like and subscribe!

I’ve made 2 fully functional 100 watt rev f clones, with mesa’s transformers. I was under the impression that they were more similar until I built them. the biggest differences, -the order of parts. The fx loop is before the tone stack in the SLO. The master volume feeds directly into the phase inverter where in a REV F, the tone stack is before the cathode follower of the optional serial fx loop. -Modern mode switches out the negative feedback of the power section in a REV F, among some smaller tweaks, the SLOs negative feedback is always engaged. -The cathode resistors and bypass caps are the same values for both amps, which makes their schematics look very similar EXCEPT on the high gain channel the resistors are shorted to ground, and only effect the cathode on the cleaner channels. On the SLO, the clean channel is bypassing a few gain stages and leaves the resistor alone. This makes the high gain of the mesa way more high gain than that of the SLO. -the clean channel of the SLO is ALWAYS ON even when switched to higher gain. There are more smaller differences, but these are huge. I plan to make a separate video for the 100w when I have more time.

@@Anomicaudio Thanks for the follow-up! It would be great to see the video of your 100W build. It's been a dream of mine to own a Rev "F" for close to twenty years now. This was the year I was going to buy a Vintage one but after research I decided not to. Every amp tech I see warns against Mesa and Rev "F"'s are not cheap. It's nice to see someone finally make a clone. There are a gazillion Marshall and Fender clones but god forbid if someone actually makes an effort to make a Mesa copy (now someone has)! Thanks for the info! I'll stay posted on your channel for further progress. Also, the little amp sound awesome, good work btw!

Ef80s. They are small but true pentodes with a nine pin socket.
