Fishing a new mark on the River Usk, Newport
After discovering the new access point down to the river on Monkey Island, Newport, I just had to head there on the e-bike to give it a try.
It also gave me the chance to try the new jighead hooks with a spinner.
A really nice spot for fishing in Newport. There is a bit of a slope from the new access point but nothing too difficult for pushing the e-bike down and up.
It was an 11.5m tide today so the path on the bank was pretty much next to the water. I think on most tides this mark will be very fishable and only on the highest tides could there be a problem with flooded paths.
Even though it's pretty grassy around the mark these new jighead hooks coped going through the grass without too much of a problem.
Could be my new regular fishing spot in Newport until Coronation Park re-opens next year.
While the new clearance has made access to the river much easier, it is still, sadly, not wheelchair accessible. It would be so good to get some disabled platforms and accessible paths down to the river somewhere in Newport on the River Usk.

Lure fishing on the River Usk in Newport
มุมมอง 444ปีที่แล้ว
A 3-hour urban fishing session on the River Usk at Newport. I headed to the river bank behind the Motorpod and the A48 to try out three new swim bait lures. I had some excellent responses with these swimbaits at Barry so I thought I'd try them on the Usk Estuary. One of the lures produced a couple of good bites but sadly I missed them. One day soon I'll get a fish on camera. Fishing tackle: Bud...

Fishing Tackle Test - Budefo Sweepfire Spinning Rod

A trip out for a few hours down at Barry Docks as I try out my new fishing rod. This lightweight rod is designed for the traveller and backpacker in mind. Only 2.1m long it breaks down into 4 sections for easy travelling. The rod is rated for 7g to 28g lures. I tested out a range of lures from 2g to a hefty 40g to see how the rod copes. A range of lures from topwater through to jigging rigs was...

Testing Gummy Baits and Getting Bass Fever at Barry Docks

A fabulous day out at Barry Docks fishing. I headed there to test the homemade crab flavour gummy baits. Sadly ended up getting bass fever and spending time on soft lures trying to get them to bite. Bank Holiday Bus Stop Fishing Return To Barry Docks

It's a bank holiday Monday so I wanted to test out going fishing at Barry Docks using the Sunday service on the bus. Pretty straightforward and easy but the biggest disadvantage was that on Sundays and Bank Holidays, the first bus to Cardiff is at 9.30am from Newport. My favourite 2 hook rig for estuary sea fishing using t knots

My preference, where possible, is to use knots rather than connectors and t swivels etc. This is my favourite 2 hook rig that I use when fishing on the estuary or coastal sea fishing. Hi TK I started out along the path of making my own bait etc using guar gum which does the same job as gelatine. I think you are on the right path but I also investigated amino acids. I never got to the point of creating a bait from them because other things got in the way. A couple of points. You could use a form of mesh ie panty hose or linen which is what fish bites uses. Also if the baits are sticky you could roll them before use in a powder such as mussel or prawn powder. This would get over the problem and add to the attractiveness of the bait. I just imported fish bites from the US to down here in Oz which cost me 60 bucks all up. Expensive and well worth while to keep trying to make your own. Cheers Alan H

    It’s actually four tablespoons of “water” if you include the coloring and flavoring you added. I wonder if the actual water amount was reduced to three tablespoons TOTAL if the lures would last longer before disintegrating.

    Nice to see the worms hold up to being Wacky Rigged. Maybe you could stuff the worm further up to the jig head so it catches the barbs, to help keep it on better? Maybe even tie it on with a bit of cotton thread. I wonder if you could Texas rig the hook and if the worms would work if the point is skinned?

    Would love to see an update on how these are working for you. Are they very stretchy and soft? Have you tried glitter yet? Those molds sure aren't cheap! I bet you'd be better off getting a silicone mold making kit or some silicone from Smooth-On and making your own. You could make a worm, paddle tail or any thing in any size out of some modeling clay you bake hard in the oven. Like Fimo. Again, thanks for teaching how to make these!

  • @wingnutbert9685

    Just a suggestion to try. When pouring epoxies and rubbers, you pour into the low point or, if mostly level, pour in the middle and pour in that one place. This lets the liquid flow across the mold and prevents/lessens air getting trapped. Just on Amazon looking for gelatin. Great idea for avoiding plastic! ??? Is the 250 animal derived gelatin the best? Is there a higher strength than 250? Also, if you have leftover, can it be reheated later and poured again? Thanks!

    As a "non breeder" (LOL!) I prefer no kids around. But your point of bans being bad for getting kids into fishing. Unfortunately, it's not so much a numerical age but a behaviour issue, certainly more and more these days. I think a good compromise would be certain days that are adult only and some that are family days, if it's a private run spot. If the spot is publicly owned property, they it really does belong to all people, so all should be allowed to use it. Perhaps in these spots, "adult only" sections could be marked off with signage. Again, these days, it relies on people being respectful and courteous and this can too often be ignored by ignorant people. It a tough situation.

  • @wingnutbert9685
    @wingnutbert9685 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for this!!! I just can't bring myself to buy soft plastic fishing worms. Potential seems high for killing fish that eat it (Either ones you release or ones that eat pieces that come off the hook) and the waters don't need any more plastic pollution. So looking for a homemade alternative. Yours look to have a fairly soft giggly movement and an hour+ in saltwater is great (I'm only fish fresh lakes for bass and trout). I wish you video had way more views so more folks would switch to food grade baits. ???- Have you tried a lower bloom strength gelatin for more wiggly worms? Or, if you know, would that make them too weak to stay on the hook? I'll check out your other videos. Thanks again!

    I’ve been doing lots of research into this. It’s not your hook size, it’s the nature of gelatin. Use a small mess fabric in the bait when you poor and that should keep the worm from being bit off.

    • @wingnutbert9685
      @wingnutbert9685 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm interested in these DIY food grade worms too. I think your mesh idea is interesting. You could use cotton gauze perhaps to avoid plastics. I was also just thinking a few things and would like your thoughts, if you would. -Use a long, thin sewing needle to feed the fishing line right through the length of the body. Then tie on the hook and pull it back into the body to hide the shank. This might keep the bait from getting taken on short strikes plus reinforce the bait. -Or make up some short lengths of fishing line, maybe 10 to 15 pound mono. Long enough to go the length of the worm and stick out the head. Tie some knots in the line every cm or so to keep it stuck in the body. Have a small cinching loop on the end sticking out of the head. The loop would be cinched down on your hook or leader line so it stays with your rig and doesn't get lost(pollute) and can be reused. These short lines would be premade and set in the mold before the pour. Just some out loud thinking. Not experienced enough with fish yet to know what the faults of this idea would be. Perhaps you'd have some thoughts as to why it wouldn't work? Thanks!

I have seen some pretty decent conger come out and I've been told double digit bass is not unusual. There's also some pretty decent mullet. The biggest issue I have is transport, I can not fish at the best times because late evenings and into the night is a great time for fishing there but not great for public transport to get back home to Newport.

      Not personally. I don't fish there too often but I've been told there's good mullet on the pill side of the island rather than the main riverside. I think it's Spitty Pill. When the tide is in the pill fills up and because it's slack water without main currents the mullet prefer it. But personally I've not caught mullet from Monkey Island.

    Another good vid, even though there’s no fish! It’s just great to get out and try, isn’t it! Plus, you can plan your strategy for the next visit and increase your chances of a few fish! You’re totally correct about the 12 hour flasks….a nice hot cuppa always perks you up! I must say that you’re very lucky to be able to collect some mussels, as up here in the North East, the mussel population has completely vanished! I used to use mussels many years ago and they are, as you know, a good bait…as long as you bind them on with elastic! But there’s not a single one to be found on the rocks! Do you think that your artificial bait will produce some bites in the spring? I’m going to try your ideas with gelatine / glycerine and add some unusual flavours! I’ve bought a jelly worm mould, the same as you use and will be trying to create the ultimate😂 attractant! I look forward to your next vid…either making some artificial bait or trying it on the water. Tight lines mate!

      Depends on where you are fishing and what fish you are targetting. I tend to sea fish on tidal rivers so I have quite a large moulded bait and I tend to go with yellow or red colours because the estuary is quite muddy water. But I've used small worm moulds for freshwater fishing.
