only knew episode 1 as It was randomly on discovery 15 years ago. Now I know more...
Crazy how 24 years later, this ship is considered small
Ahh back when TLC had shows that didn't revolve around bimbos saying yes to a dress
I got this DVD when I sailed on the Adventure of the Seas in 2003 and have been looking for this video ever since!
This is awful! The coal bunkers were not located in the center of the ship. What kind of heck talk is this? Nice tie. The coal bunkers were located along both walls in a longitudinal arrangement to in theory protect the machines in between. This was mandated by the British government who was putting the building money upfront for this ship. How can the suppose experts appear with a straight face here? The very definition of ignorance… Thinking you know.
Look up a Derbyshire documentary- none of the reasons listed are actually what sunk her! That case is soooo fascinating! Watch channels: Brick Immortar & Big Old Boats- They are the best at ship disaster documentaries!!!
Watching this as I'm on Voyager right now!
Voyager of the Seas is a baby compared to the new Oasis class and Icon class ships of today.
Thank you a lot for this! I grew up with classic documentaries like this and the series but never saw this episode. I have shared it as well. Thank you also very much for uploading the Mayday series. I appreciate it.
so good!
Wow! We just booked voyager of the seas, our first time cruise, we saw reviews saying it’s one of the older and smaller ships. I felt a little disappointed at first.. but it’s crazy to think that a mere 23-24 years ago it was the worlds largest ship! I wanted to go on a cruise so bad when I was a kid and this ship came out when I was about 10. This changes my perspective completely. I’m basically living the high life my parents couldn’t afford when I was a kid 😂❤ and the documentary says they are competing with Disney… that makes sense since we decided to cruise with our children because it looked like a fun vacation that was a lot more affordable than Disney world. We are so excited to go!
The Sinking of the Mikhail Lermontov on February 16, 1986.
The Sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912.
Go Dive Marlborough (not affiliated but I love those guys!) offer almost all TDI training courses there - you won't find a better place to do TDI Advanced Wreck with real-world siltouts, something everyone NEEDS to experience to realise what 'zero viz' means and just how long it takes to settle, but to do it in total safety. RIP Pavel Zaglyadimov.
It truly is one of the world's best wreck dives because it's accessible to EVERYONE. At just 14m to the port side, someone fresh out of their OW course can traverse the entire ship in bright lighting, looking into 1st class cabins on the Promenade deck, and safely traverse the large, open, bright Bolshoi lounge with open windows and exits everywhere. But it's also a lovely advanced OW dive, with the engine room being a simply swim through the skylights at 27m, straight ahead (there's a line) to the port cylinder heads, then up the stairs to the bunker room door on the port side, which has no door, it's the 2nd easiest engine room I've ever dived. Parts of the ship are best suited to rebreathers (I blow bubbles and make silt!), and others you should never enter - it literally offers perfect diving for every conceivable level of diver, nobody will leave disappointed. My fears of her deteriorating are proving less of a concern than they were, the upper aluminium decks dropping down in the Kaikoura quake spoiled her beauty, but it also opened the Cargo hold and other new ways in so I think over the years we'll be able to reach more and more of her safely.
The ship is sinking.
Abandon ship
Fantastic to learn about my family.

I'll tell ya-the song really caught me off guard.
In spanish where Is it?
Once uppon a time was the largest cruise ship in the world. But today most largest surpases him for more 100,000 tons!. Aniway, voyager of the seas was impressive at the moment of his first travel. I remember i see a brochure of this ship and i and my friends feel a deep admiration for his size and design.
I love that the Voyager Class has aged so incredibly well. Hope they stay in service for years to come!
The CEO talking about building a house, and on the small end he says 6,000 square feet 😯
Considering he was the CEO of royal Caribbean, I’m sure that’s how big his house is. 6-7k square feet is mansion status!
Thank you. Been looking for this for years
The captain was an incompetent lying coward. It's too convenient that the fire took out the radio room and the life boat radio. I think he chose to abandon ship and make up lies about what happened.
What r u saying that the captain started the whole fire himself????😊
The porter who took the life jackets should have been beaten. What a coward.
Watching this now in 2022 is almost hilarious, seeing how this ship was designed in 1996 with pens and paper and primitive computers (as opposed to VR screens and CAD design stations)…all for a ship, the Voyager class, that has LONG been passed by as “the state of the art” and “Royal Caribbean’s BIGGEST SHIP EVER” and is now considered “old and boring “ compared to the Quantum and Oasis class ships (and maybe whatever the heck the Icon class ends up being!)
Definitely boring compared to Icon and Wonder lol
This was extremely interesting, and yet another reason why I think James Cameron is another one of Hollywood's bad apples. Aside from likely hastening the decomposition of the Titanic he also never issued a public statement just a breif "I didn't know there was a J.Dawson" nor did he apologize to the family for attracting fangirls/boys of the film to poor Joe Dawson's grave, likely causing wear and tear. also the film is garbage, so many inaccuracies including an impossible 3'rd-1'st class love story (which was cheesy and not in a so bad it's good way) as mentioned in this documentary.

I want my ship to have a 18 hole golf course.
I've been searching 20 years for this! But this doesn't have the original music, and yes after 20 years I still remember the original music. Do you have the A380 one too? There was also a skyscraper one which I never saw.
Volume is quite low.
Ok, now I remember there were three cruise ship documentaries I rewatched endlessly, and after ‘Cities on the Sea’ and ‘Secret World of Cruise Ships’, here’s the third. I’m losing my mind. This is amazing. If no-one ever hears from me again it’s cuz I drowned in concentrated nostalgia.
Here with you. World's Greatest Ships.
OMFG There were like two (three?) documentaries I watched endlessly in my youth about cruise ships, and I only remembered the title of one of them - ‘Cities on the Sea’. I found that one on your channel, so I thought I’d check out your other vids. And … holy carp, here’s the other docu. Well that’s my evening’s schedule all filled up now. EDIT: I have to ask - how did you get these? Did you just record all these on VHS back in the day? That’s what I (well, my mother) did, but I tossed out those cassettes eons ago. Came to regret that.
My … god. My mother recorded this documentary (and a slightly older one featuring the Grand Princess whose title is long lost to me) on VHS when I was a kid. I think I watched it until the cassette was about ready to fall apart. I spent years looking to see if anyone anywhere had a copy, and now I find this. What a blast from the past. Too bad about the first half, but oh well. Bless ya for posting this.
If anyone is interested, the video in this link is from Smit-Tak, the salvage company who recovered the vessel from its location outside the harbour. th-cam.com/video/HcSAejJfUeg/w-d-xo.html
Will Lyman: one of my absolute idols in voice-overs. The only person I can think of in the VO industry I hold in higher esteem is Peter Thomas. Sadly, as of 30 April 2016, Peter is no longer with us. However, in present day, if you have a documentary that requires a serious voice and if you can afford him, you can't ever go wrong with Will.
I've been saying the same thing for years! Almost as good as Mr Lyman and in addition to the late Peter Thomas, was Gene Galusha who narrated "The New Detectives"
Terrible voice overs from Will Lyman. A terrible accent in the English language.
38:22 radio operator called marconi, no way.
@Zakir Anderson - At 33:59 the narrator states that this was his nickname. Still interesting. Would be like calling an electrician Tesla.
Sooooo glad someone finally uploaded this!! This was my favorite documentary to watch as a teen Voyager class is still amazing to me
I will never forget watching these on I think channel 4, the spring before 9/11.
I'm very grateful to this channel too! It fills in several important maritime history voids. This series was a big favorite of mine back then.
"But our captain, God bless him, he was the first to leave the ship..." WTF?! In sarcasm of course.
Saw this back in 1999 - stumbled on it now - brings back a few memories.
Same here!
Alma and Gordon Hicks were two of four children who lost their lives in the disaster. Another was Colin Johnson, age 6. In 2008 when commemorating the 40th anniversary, Colin's two brothers Neil and Ian, who were 7 and 5 at the time and were among the 37 children who survived the sinking were featured in a news segment on the tragedy.
After Wahine they ordered a new bigger ferry called Rangatira for the Wellington Lyttelton run, but in the years after 1968 the market for inter island travel changed dramatically. Jet service out of Christchurch quickened travel to Wellington cut heavily into ferry traffic. At the same time the National Rail service has established a shorter ferry route between Wellington and Picton, which was abt 150 miles closer than Lyttelton. Rangatira saw a few short seasons until the service was suspended in 1976
