When I was in elementary school, our homeroom teacher, in amidst of giving us a lecture about the importance of being careful with our laces on escalators (or smth like that), told us a story about how she went drinking with her friends in a shopping mall; there was a broken down escalator, but her friend dicided to ignore it and started going down on it as on stairs. She tripped and fell, and at this moment the escalator activated and (I honestly don't remember how) her foot got between the moving mechanisms. The foot is no more. Don't know if that story is true or not, and how much of it I remembered correctly (since it had been around 10 years since I heard it), but it sure as hell gave us a trauma of sorts lol. So, no, I'll never use a broken escalator as stairs.
