Sailing Lake Michigan - Northern IL/Southern WI
I grew up sailing and windsurfing near the Indiana Dunes. After a 25-year absence to inland lake power boat with my family, we bought a 1983 17' Day Sailer in 2018, which we stored mast up at Skipper Buds and launched on weekends. In 2019, we bought a 1985 Laguna 24 that we kept at North Point Marina. This was the try it out boat at the try it out price to make sure we were ready for the marina scene. In August 2020, we bought a 1986 Pearson 28-2 with more amenities, then bought our latest boat, a 1989 Catalina 34, in June 2022. We moved the boat to Reefpoint Marina in 2024.
I'm happy to be back sailing. There's nothing like the power and beauty of Lake Michigan!
The videos are primarily intended for family and friends, but I am more than happy to share!

Beautiful video. Glad to see people from Racine having fun. Love from Kenosha!
We used to keep the boat in Winthrop Harbor but moved it to Racine this year - we've put a lot of miles going up and down the shoreline past Kenosha over the years!
Nice day for a sail….your forestay is abit slack I think though
Very nice! When will we get a proper exterior and interior tour?
@andyl8025 thanks. It's out of the water for the winter - nothing too special, just a really clean 1989 Catalina 34.
Go Laurel!
@@SusanConnolly-u5n she does ok 😄
For sure!
nice sailing !! 🥰
@@velerolocura thanks - enjoy your sailing adventures!
Was this last weekend? Beautiful day for a sail!
A couple weekends ago!
Dieser Kotflügel ist während der Fahrt unbemerkt heruntergefallen... beim Solosegeln ist es schwer, alles zu beobachten. 😊
@fjimenez60077 he leaves it out to slow down, he doesn't want to make us all look bad 😀
An dem Fender draußen erkennt man den Profi. 😉👍
Beautiful
Awesome!
Love my C34, predictable and sails amazing.
We are very happy with the boat.
Nice photos of the lake
No, about 10 days ago, air show weekend. Today would be much worse!
Is that today??
Just bought a Laguna 24, it’s pretty old and needs a lot of work, was wondering if you have any tips. It’s our first sailboat. So much like you it’ll be our try it out/ camper on the water. Pros and cons you’ve had with it?
I grew up sailing 12' to 16' dinghies but this was my 1st 'real' sailboat, lol. The boat was fun on the water and sailed well. We slept on it but it was kind of like tent camping so we decided to go bigger for more room and amenities after 2 seasons. We then had the Pearson 28 for 2 seasons and now sail a Catalina 34 which seems to be the perfect boat for us. The boat pretty much had all the things typical to older boats - some leaky port lights, tired wood work, older and limited electronics. It's a solid boat, just needs some TLC and cleaning up. Have fun with it!
😂😂😂 I had the same Laguna 24, what a beautiful sailboat, i had to sell it because the slip was ridiculously expensive in Chicago...without a doubt one if the best looking sailboats ever. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
@@Jorde-u4u we had it 2 summers up in Winthrop Harbor - fun little boat.
Without a doubt one of the best looking sailboats never looks old! ❤❤❤❤❤
Any suggestions on where to get a replacement forward hatch for a Laguna 24S or other parts for that matter? I’m looking at purchasing one but the forward hatch has totally come off and needs to be replaced?
@josephrosser4609 sorry no. We only had the boat about 2 years and I didn't change anything on it.
Tartans are great boats. We use to have one. Thanks for sharing
They are nice! We have 2 friends with them.
Thanks for sharing. Keep up the posting. We always enjoy your videos.
Thanks, we usually check out your stuff too, it's pretty up there.
Awesome sail Robbie!
Thanks, when are you coming!
What size is your headsail?
On the Sabre? I'm not sure. It's not my boat, I was just filming someone in our marina.
I have one ! Im on Vancouver Island. Comfortable cruising sailboat.
That was our first 'real' sailboat. We had a good time with it. We just decided we wanted more space - twice since then! 🙂
Yup, that’s what the majority of our “sailing” looks like. 😄 It’s beautiful nonetheless!
Yep, I don't mind this for traveling.
Very Nice!
Thanks for the visit
I have targeted the Cat34' for a sailer on Lake Superior ... any regrets on your purchase ???
None at all, just the opposite. I went from a sporty Pearson 28 that was a blast to sail, and I thought I was going to have to give up some of that fun moving to the bigger, heavier C34. The boat handles well and is fun to sail. The extra length and weight are definitely nice to have in heavier weather. The boat is not going to win any races but gets along pretty well.
Closing out the season is always sad. Nice video. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah it is, but happy times are almost here again! We usually launch the 1st week of April.
lov that 34 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
my fav boat if I ad one !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We've had it since 2022, real happy with it!
Nice video. Thanks for sharing. The Lake can be beautiful when the weather is right
There's nothing like it!
keep the videos coming. but do longer videos.
Fun. It's always nice to see someone else doing the same stuff I like to do, like letting the boat steer, and hanging out on the bow pulpit. Not as easy on the Chesapeake Bay due to the high volume of boat traffic.
I love checking things out from different places on the boat and playing with the camera.
💙
Nice boat... I sailed a 28-II for 9 years.
We had a 28-2 for 2 years, really liked it just needed more room.
That 303 is for sale right now lol!
Absolutely wonderful
Beautiful boat, beautiful area.
Beautiful!
Thanks, I love playing with the camera when I'm sailing!
Day Sailor, do you happen to know or herd of a monohoul sailboat passed by us (Corsair 750) on the way back to North Point Marina in the mid August of 2023? Big SW wind, flat water and we were flying. They were were shooting a video of us and I would love to see it.
I haven't heard of anyone that has some recent video of you. One of the guys that sails in our group takes awesome drone footage. It's pretty late in the season but if you think of it next year contact me and I can put you in touch with him. The footage this year was with a new drone, better quality. This is some of his work. th-cam.com/video/12V2FcaPu6k/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/yRadyOBgLz0/w-d-xo.html
Hi day sailor. I came across your video of my boat. What a treat!!! Thanks for posting, nice to see how the boat looks sailing from different perspective.
It was good to see you today - sorry, I don't check for comments very often. I haven't seen you guys on the water too much lately, love your boat!
Nice video
Thanks - did you read the 'About' section of my channel? Your sailing story is a lot like mine, except I'm on my 4th boat since 2018 lol!
@@daysailor_c34 Very similar stories!
Hi: Where did you purchase the drifter, please? Thanks. DRS / RVN Vet.
I’ve got an ‘87 thanks for sharing ⛵️🇺🇸🖖🏼
My boat, SISU, is an '89. The boat with the blue canvas is an '88.
Nice, from an owner of a Catalina 34 (Mk 1.5). Seems like you got a great bimini... will check your other videos.
The boat was well outfitted and taken care of by the previous owners, we've had her about a year now. The videos are nothing too fancy, lol, just a hobby!
Nice escape hatch in the Head 🤘🤠
Very nice 😮
Love my 28-2 here on Lake Erie, lots of fun to sail!
It was a lot of fun to sail! We gave it up for some more room and it was a little too 'sporty' for my wife at times.
@@daysailor_c34 Haha, I get the same reaction from my wife occasionally!
Thanks for sharing. Nice video
Nice looking vessel. Thanks for this. I just got one. Good reference for the refit
Good luck to you, it was a nice little boat!
Was your boat ever on the Chesapeake?
Not that I'm aware of. The guy we bought it from used it around Madison and Milwaukee then we moved it a little south to the IL/WI state line area. We sold it to a couple that was taking it to the IN/MI side of the lake.
@@daysailor_c34 Thank you. I had a sister boat “AURUM” for about 20 years. Wonderful litter boat.
It is a great little boat, sails well.
Thinking of buying a 1988 34. Any problems I need to watch out for? It has a CNG stove..cant find anyplace here in Dallas that can refill.
We have owned the boat since last June and love it - no special problems I can think of, just items typical of any 30+ year old boat. I would join the Catalina 34 Sailboat Enthusiasts Facebook group if you haven't already. You can search for any concerns you might have there. Our boat only had the CNG cooktop, not stove, but the previous owner had already ripped out all the old lines since it's hard to get around here too. I made a compartment for a single buner butane cooktop that we store in that space, that and the microwave is really all we need with how we use the boat.
A single person could easily live on this!
