Got interested in early jazz as a kid and from the late 50 s on buying all the 1920’s jazz 78’s I could find in Salvation Army, thrift stores, swap meets and yard sales. Had early jazz radio show entitled “ Jazz Show Mouldy Figge” for 6 years in the 1980’s. Also bought reissue jazz lp’s through the mail from specialized jazz record stores in England.

Listening in 2024 😁
Hi! Could you tell me on what player, at what speed, and with what needle you used whenever you played this? I have a bunch of old home records from my grandmother recorded on records that are almost identical to this and I am dying to be able to listen to them!
great
Is this audio from the British Rhythm Society release, curious of its quality?
WONDERFUL, thanks for posting, Jones was an exceptional pianist....
Gershwin didn't take care of his health very well. Playing continually at parties through the wee small hours of the night.
Orch. arranged by Peter Packay
Gregoire Nakchounian is my grand grand father😍
Pianola Pete was an alias for Ted Auletta. Born October 22, 1923 Died January 22, 1979
My grandpa was born in 1928.
I enjoy these clips.
He had a nice speaking voice as well! It's soothing on the low end.
QUE BUEN TRABAJO PARA ESE TIEMPO
What a lively bit of jabberwocky, thanks!

Marvelous!
Beautiful, thanks!
Recorded on October 15, 1926.
In training in classical music i was enraptured in hearing his classical compositions which created a new type of music combining jazz, blues and classical but was truly classical masterpieces cut short by his brain tumour.i only found out later that he wrote popular songs.
If you want to hear Spangler REALLY play, you should hear his super-rare Rex record "Snyder and Berlin Song Hits Medley" on Rex 5204. (in fairness, this Rex record, either 5026 or 5342, which was dubbed for this reissue CD is also quite rare; all Rex vertical-groove records are rare, but some more so than others). Anyway in the Snyder-Berlin song medley side (which is NOT the same as the Mike Bernard recording of similar title, although a couple of the same tunes are included), Spangler goes ALL OVER THE PIANO arranging these songs in a very bravura way. I think it might be his 'greatest hurrah' of the four known sides he recorded ("Cannon Ball Rag"; "Red Onion Rag"; "Snyder and Berlin Song Hits Medley" and Chris Smith's "Piping Rock" fox-trot, the latter with a small band called "His Instrumentalists"). To me, this song medley (and frankly, Bernard's), more clearly illustrate how people would 'rag' and arrange/improvise on pop songs, as a precursor to jazz, than do these more formal composed rags, great though they are. A friend has an original of Spangler's song hits record and I am looking for my MP3 dub of it I made on a visit to them several years ago. If I can find it, I'll post it up with their permission (unless they want to do it themselves). To my knowledge that record has never been reissued in any format and is nowhere online; my friend says he knows of only 3 copies extant.
Mr. Spangler does get away from the score, notably at the trio-intro (which is NOT in the published score, so I presume is Mr. Spangler's own creation). This occurs at 1:24 - 1:28 in the video here. The rest is very much like the published score, with filled-out basslines (and maybe a few changed basslines). Also, the exciting 'dogfight' or interlude from 1:58 - 2:08 is ALSO not present in the published score, and likewise seems to be Mr. Spangler's invention. A very nice performance of this great and tuneful Abe Olman rag!
The best solo I have ever heard from Joe Darensbourg. Impressive sound, diction and swing.
The New Leviathan Orchestra played this song on Saturday Night Live's New Orleans special in 1977. An incredible performance!
Fabulous swinging melodic jazz.
Prelude 2 too fast? Is that him or tape?
I think this is the only surviving audio of the "We want Cantor" thing that's constantly referenced in old cartoons.
I played the 2nd prelude in an arrangement for wind ensemble. Gershwin's tempo is interesting. I've always heard it played much slower. Like everyone else, it is a thrill to hear Gershwin's comments in his own voice.
Thanks for posting this. Ruth Roye was my grandmother's first cousin.
Hello Jazzguy! I'm curious, how are you able to play this on TH-cam when it's copyright protected? I'm preparing my own channel, having nothing to do with music, but I've been buying songs for copyright. I need a few older songs like this one and since I own 'Vintage Music' album, I was trying to find out about them. I found that 1923 is the cutoff date for open domain of songs recorded before that year. (weird to think it's just over a 100 years ago) Anyhow, I'm just curious because I see people on YT have songs playing on their videos all of the time without any copyright license. How is that? And by the by, please note; This is no admonition, I'm genuinely curious. Thank you!
That short, bluesy composition is from his “Three Preludes”. George used to compose short pieces for practice, which he called “novelettes”. Once he was asked to accompany a famous singer (L. Price) at a concert performance. For his solo section of the evening, George took along and played six of these novelettes. Three of them became the “Three Preludes”.

Sorry I never responded to your request re. the album. It is Motherlode M0104 and has 12 songs on it. It was made by the band to sell at their club in San Fran. Same personnel as the record you have.
It is Vol 2 and I just saw it listed on Amazon for $99.00. It must be rare,I also Have Motherlode album Vol.1 different personne.l
Thank you! Fabulous!
This is not Ms O'Neals voice. The uncredited singer sounds much like the wonderful Helen Rowland, who also sang under the name of Helene Daniels.
This is quite an updated arrangement of this song which is usually played like a Louisiana folk-jazz song it is.
This is an acoustical recording on Harmony, with vocal by Irving Kaufman.
