Episode 86 From Honeymoon to Reality: Managing Conflict in Relationships
Ever wondered why the blissful 'honeymoon phase' in relationships doesn't last forever? Join us for a fascinating discussion with Melissa Ferrari, an experienced psychotherapist, as we uncover the intricate transition from romance to reality in long-term partnerships. You'll discover how this pivotal phase offers a crucial choice: to work on personal and relational growth or to fall into the trap of blaming your partner.
Melissa sheds light on how unresolved familial patterns can add psychological layers to relationships, providing a deeper understanding of the dynamics at play. As relationships evolve, so do the unconscious patterns and expectations that couples build over time. In this episode, we explore how these habits can sometimes turn partners into burdens, and why acknowledging this is essential for a healthier marriage. Communication is the cornerstone of any relationship, and we dive into how empathetic dialogue can transform your partnership. Tune in as Fiona has some aha moments and learn some strategies that can begin to build a stronger relationship.
Melissa Ferrari is a qualified counsellor and psychotherapist with over 25 years of experience in couples counselling, refugee/migrant counselling, and individual psychotherapy. Fully certified and specialising in the Psychobiological Approach to Couple Therapy (PACT), Melissa provides intensive sessions with practical, personalised feedback, through which she helps individuals and couples to make savvy relationship choices. Melissa has a strong media presence in Australia and for the past 10 years has held regular spots on The Today Show, Today Extra, ABC Radio and now with her column in The Courier-Mail she discusses relationships and how to create secure and solid connections. I agree that healthy food can taste great. However, there is an evolutionary reason why most people crave sugar. Over thousands of years of human evolution, sugar was scarce and those who were able to grab it whenever it was available had a greater chance at evolutionary success as they could get energy to do more work when every food resource and simple carbohydrates in particular were very scarce. However, in the last few centuries (a small part of our overall evolutionary history), for the first time more people are dying due to excess energy-rich food, in particular sugar, than due to scarcity of the same. Biology is not destiny. We as humans have the ability to override our instincts. However, one of the reasons people continue to crave for sugar even though it is harmful to them is because in the past this was helpful and we need to acknowledge the hangover of evolutionary instincts that are no longer useful and in fact harmful to us now. Yes, by conscious thinking and planning we can surely find alternatives that are both healthy and tasty.
Just because our greater grandmother used to eat it doesn’t mean we should be eating it. Yes, she ate loads of butter and cream, but people were also dropping dead of heart attacks even into their 40’s and 50’s back then. Fact is, butter and cream and eventually all animal saturated fats raise the main causal risk factor in heart disease, which is ApoB. And all LDL particles carry the ApoB tag. It is the that we need “balance” when it comes to nutrition, but that only works to a degree. And every one has their own edition of what “balance” means. Many people call eating x % of saturated fat as their daily fat calories “balance” despite the research showing that it is the threshold when risk for heart disease begins to greatly increase. And probably exercise is also another missing factor. And may be just as or even more informant than nutrition when it comes to health. Many ppl just focus on diet but they can barely run for 20 mins right being winded and they’re severely overweight. If you’re overweight then any diet won’t help you because being overweight means you’re in a constant state of systemic inflammation. Yes nutrition is influenced by ideology. And many people push bad science. Most who push bad science actually lack a proper understanding of how to read studies and the order of the hierarchy of scientific evidence. That’s were most of the confusion comes from. But if we look at the totality of the scientific data and evidence which is well established and has been well established for many decades now, it points to a clear direction of what is most assorted with good health outcomes and that is a plant based diet, low in saturated fat and sodium, with moderate to plenty of protein (lean protein), and low unsaturated fat and higher in unsaturated healthy fats and higher in fiber. There is no disagreement among the scientific consensus with this. There is only disagreement online with social media gurus selling nonsense supplements and snake oil and books and trying to get views. This distorts tings and creates the false impression to the average person that there is heavy disagreement amongst academics but there really isn’t when you go to the universities that specialize in nutrition science. Most scientists agree on the well established things. It’s just the online gurus who push misinformation who disagree. Most of them are lying to sell stuff or just not very bright; not bright enough to understand how to read studies or the data, etc. “Just eat real food” is not good enough. If in am eating a ton of butter and cream and red meat, my risk of heart disease (the biggest killer) and colon cancer increases greatly. This worship of “Whole Foods” and “just because it’s natural” appeals to nature fallacy type of thinking can also be very dangerous.
That would i eat All the time very good😅
Very well done Fiona!
Thanks 🙏
"I don't drink" is a nonsense. If you didn't drink you would die of dehydration. What you presumably mean is that you don't drink alcohol.
Such a good description!
Wonderful Episode - I learned a lot. Great conversation with your guest Khadine and had so much great health and wellbeing information - thanks so much Fiona and Khadine.
You're very welcome, glad you learned something
So True - we don't realise we have disconnected. I can say from experience that reconnecting is life changing.
I found this discussion fascinating. I refused both statins and diabetes medications. So far, controlled them by diet. Hoping to continue that way
Thanks. That's great. Medications have their place, great if we can safely avoid them though.
A video on cholesterol would be great.
It is scheduled for next Wednesday 😊
🙋 'promosm'
Great video and to the point Fiona.
Thanks
Boundaries are vital but hating those who cross them is where we go wrong. We must try to response calmly when they do
yes, not everyone will understand your boundaries or respond well, you get to choose how you respond to them though
😂😂😂I was about to say half the time we don't even know these ingredients
Most spices have sugar n yet we are told that sugar is bad for us😢
yes, must always read the label
*PromoSM*
Just answer the damn question! 🙄 We don’t care about everything you said! We already know all that! Don’t need to do videos if it’s to answer the nonsense you did! Useless video ever! Please next time avoid to loose peoples time!
Not at the same time as the USA. Wrong time of year. By six months. It’s beyond dumb.
Thank you for sharing !
