This actually happened to my wife and I. We were married 54 years. When she passed away away, 6 months ago the tree was still there. Buy half fallen down, it has hung on the past five years. This song was played at her funeral, with a story of how much it meant to both of us. Miss her every minute. ❤

John Hartford first composed and recorded "Gentle On My Mind" in 1967. His recording reached number 60 on the country music chart. He was inspired to compose the song after seeing the film "Dr. Zhivago". The travel scenes and pleasant images left a lasting impression. Hartford and music editor Chuck Glaser first offered the song to Johnny Cash, who turned it down. A few months after the release of Hartford, Glen Campbell recorded "Gentle On My Mind". His recording fared slightly better than Hartford's, reaching number 30 on the country music chart. In 1968 the record was re-released and reached number 39 on the Hot 100 chart and number 8 on the Easy-Listening chart. "Gentle On My Mind" subsequently became the theme song for Campbell's CBS television variety series "Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour". The song was awarded 4 Grammys in 1968: Best Folk Performance, Best Country and Western Song, Best Country and Western Recording and Best Male Country and Western Vocal Performance (Campbell). Other recordings of the song include versions by Patti Page in 1968, by Boots Randolph in 1968, by Aretha Franklin in 1969 and by Dean Martin in 1969. Elvis recorded "Gentle On My Mind" on January 15, 1969 at American Sound Studio in Memphis. Ronnie Milsap played the piano and Ed Kollis played the harmonica on this recording.
