Sorry for the video orientation. I installed 5” tires to bldc hub motors and tested on snow surface. Video is for logging purpose. I wanted to see the torque and power used and skid-steering behavior on snow surface. I will conduct similar tests on dry/wet asphalt, mud and such...       Just, it depends what kind of battery. I don’t think small gusts of winds could charge a big battery. For wind turbine use, you probably need to live in a windy area, use two of these motors and a gear mechanism to increase the rpm. Then maybe it would make sense.

      It’s a 48v 1200W Chinese bldc motor with 3 shift gear axle. Without gear, it wouldn’t have enough torque to evenly distribute the power

    Great job. I tried to build an RC lawnmower with 2 hoverboard mainboards and 4 motors but it goes crazy for some reason. With only 1 board and 2 motor it worked ok. Any idea what could be wrong? I connected the two board inputs in paralell with receiver output for forward/reverse & left/right channels. I believe there is some type of interference?

      I had similar problem when i hooked it up to RC. I don't remember what was the issue, but if i recall right, I switched to iBus from PWM. Try it.

      @@3phasetinkerer I actually didn't want to ask this. I drive the motor with Arduino and UART communication. I'm having trouble transferring to a ros environment. I prepared a urdf in the Ros environment, I am having problems transferring this transaction here.

      Hi Patrick nice to see you around again. In video above I used two arduinos to process rc transmitter signals to feed esc and hydraulic cylinder. Later I wrote pico micropython for same task as arduino get’s exhausted and lags. As of today, I wrote server/client app to exchange telemetry/teleop data over network socket which means I’m writing my own software to move this toy soon via raspberry pi 4. I’m looking forward to test rpi 5 with my software. If it doesn’t cut, I’ll ho for full blown i7 16gig mini pc on 19v. Are you on twitter? Hit me up if you are there.

      I used to have 4x4 configuration at somepoint but I don't remember where. You basically parallel connect tx/rx, make an extra launch with different name (you may want to create own package) and 1 launch file to launch two boards. In theory it is very simple. Do you have two boards? I may make a tutorial for this and upload to youtube.

      @@3phasetinkerer I have two boards. When I roslaunch file 4x4.launch. It will have front/hoverboard_cmd_vel and rear/hoverboard_cmd_vel. I I do not know how to combine together into one cmd_vel. In the Robaka_ros will use hoverboard.launch, but this launch uses 1 cmd_vel from front board or rear board. I want to use 4x4.launch in robaka_ros. Please support me if you make config for 2 boards. Thank you

    Is the odom stable in ROS when using Hub motors? I ask this as hub motors have low encoder resolution

      Even though they are lower resolution compared to regular encoders, hub moto hall sensors are still surprisingly accurate. Unless you are doing millimetric calculations, they are more than sufficient for this purpose.

      @@3phasetinkerer what about pid frequency ? I typically run pid at 30hz... With hub motors I'm still finding out ideal frequency, as at frequency greater than 10hz motor kind of juggles when 0 velocity is set

      @@anujpatel6438 tbh I have never paid attention to PID freq. Since I’ve disassembled the above motor and working on a 6x6 ugv, unfortunately I won’t be able to answer this question.

    Great project, i want to built one myself, could you please tell me waht aluminium structure you used here to make the chasis, also if im not wrong, part of the motor suports seems to be 3D printed, do the have enough strengt to wistand the weight and the poweer of the motors ?

      Hello Igor, thank you. I used 25 x 25 mm aluminium profiles from my old desktop cnc machine and strapped the motor around it with 4 bolts. There is absolutely no need for 3d print.

      I forgot to mention that weight has not been problem, ever. 25x25 aluminium seem to sufficient, just don't stand on it :)

      I also found out in another video that some of these motors are wired differently but mine was already wired as what some others want to achieve. And some others modify motors turn it into 1 phase AC and rule out the rectifier method, in this case, speaking of voltage and amperage outcome would be pretty similar.

      No, the one I have in video has bundle of 4 wires each soldered together it’s ends. I think set of my older hoverboard motors had the configuration you described. Do you have a video link to motor you refer to? And possible coil rewiring? I posted photo of the motor in my channel, check it out and let me know if we are talking about the same configuration.

      @@3phasetinkerer The image you posted, it's the same one I have. I saw another guy rewire the motor to produce a lot of voltage.with low RPM. I spent 3 days failing to rewire it, but now tonight I finally succeeded. I can produce more than 30 volts with a hand crank, but stock configuration I was getting 8 volts max. Check out the Hoverboard generator by "Crafty Dude DIY's" he was the one I got the inspiration from.

      Hello Kayton. I changed this robot a lot so I do not remember exact numbers, but when I was teleoperating (teleop twist keyboard defaults) via ros, I had to decrease x-axis speed about 30% and increased the y-axis about 40%. You can alternatively change parameters in your hoverboard controller files as well. What FOC hack you flashed yours with?

      @@3phasetinkerer Thanks. I did not flash/hack the hoverboard. I used external controllers to control the hoverboard motors. I am running the motors at 25% speed (3 km/hr) and while pivoting, I am running the motors at 12% speed so that the robot car does not pivot excessively so I can control the turning. I need to learn how to flash the hoverboard coz it might be easier to use its own controllers instead of external controllers 🙂Cheers

      Hello sorry for returnin back late. Speaking of brushless motors, your options are "unfortunately" limited. I used original hoverboard motor controller, some find O'drives easier for full ROS integration. If you would like to just teleop control it, you could use arduino or ESC controller but your options will be still limited. I recommend hoverboards own board, very easy to hack and run motors via ROS.

The part that I am finding challenging is the motor controller for these brushless motors and their connection to Raspberry Pi. I have built robots using Raspberry Pi and geared DC motors.       Hello, sorry for not replying fast, I was having a break from computer. For tires just google search this size: 4.10/3.50 - 5. If you have hoverboard hub motors make sure the center diameter matches.
