Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue - Jim Shepherd (flugel) & Helen Varley (tenor horn)
Hard to believe it's a year since the wonderful Jim Shepherd left us. I thought people might like to hear a couple of lovely recordings where Jim was playing flugel horn. Despite his incredible dexterity as the world's best cornet player it has always been his slow melody recordings that I love the most, especially on flugel when he had such a gorgeous dark tone and the jazziest slow vib.
It was so much fun to record the duet Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue - this one has Jim's twinkle in the cheeky last bar.
The song was composed by Richard Leigh, and originally made famous by Crystal Gale in 1977. This lovely arrangement is by Goff Richards, the finest of brass band arrangers.

Performed here as a tenor horn solo with the British Army Brass Band Catterick, conducted by Major Brenden Wheeler, as part of Saxhorn Fest 2020. A beautiful solo called simply 'If', originally made famous by David Gates with the band Bread, and performed here in the brass band arrangement by Derek Ashmore. This performance with the British Army Band Catterick was a special one as my good friend Major Brenden Wheeler was conducting, as part of Saxhorn Fest 2020 (just weeks before lockdown!). Really enjoyed that Helen . I have both the cornet and Flugel versions for full band and often play the solo at home on either euph or bari. It's a lovely piece of music and a surprisingly easy piece to play . I love the rather " meaty " piano part , not heard it before ........lets hope they arrange it for Bb instruments , mind you i could always try it on the wifes Eb Bass .....lol.

I wonder how many in the audience listened to that and thought how beautifully played it was , i sometimes think people don't appreciate the skill involved in getting an instrument to " sing " to that level . Beautifully played Helen , a superb sound , superb .
