Greatest of the Greats. Harry makes Gabriel's Torricelli Trumpet sound like a mere Bugle.

Not only is this an iconically difficult piece to play - it's also a very difficult piece to play well - which is the true sign of a virtuoso like Harry James. He is indeed an underestimated and underappreciated "greatest generation" musician.

My dad was a jazz trumpeter and Harry James was his hero. My dad had a photo of me as a baby that was actually signed by Harry James, wishing me a happy life. He had it in his wallet until the day he died. My mom gave it to me and I still have it to this day.

Been listening to Harry James for about 55 years now. I'm 66 now. This man and his orchestra were awesome live at Disneyland!!!!!!

To me, he was the best trumpet player in the world. What marvelous talent. When you put the three best in the world at the time together, Harry James, Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa, you had music that was unparalleled.

I heard an unidentified trumpeter play it up one or two octives... maybe dbl the speed... and too bad but it wasn't identified. It very well could be HJ... but a diff recording. I've performed this with the 1st Marine Div band... i was a saxophonist... one of perhaps 3 or 4 most difficult pieces I've ever been a part of performing or hearing performed. Composed and Arranged by Jimmy Mundy ca. 1948. James first recorded it in 1949 for Columbia in a severely cut / shortened version to fit on a 10-inch 78rpm record. Mundy composed and / or arranged many of Goodman's most famous arrangements from 1936-1939 including BG's "Sing, Sing, Sing"... Mundy began as a violinist as a child and began doubling on saxophone in the 1920s and became known as a saxophonist and arranger for Earl "Fatha" Hines famous band in Chicago in the 1930s and then Chick Webb in Harlem (New York City). Artie Shaw commissioned a few pieces from Mundy in 1944-45, among them is Shaw's great record of Mundy's original composition "Lady Day" written in honor of the great singer Billie Holiday (who had worked as Shaw's band Vocalist in 1938).

I've played professional trpt since I was in 9th grade (1968) and I've NEVER heard anything played this fast and accurate on a trpt. I got to hear Harry LIVE twice and he literally blew the roof off the bandstand each time.

A little off topic, but early on Frank Sinatra was Harry James' singer. Tommy Dorsey wanted Frank in HIS orchestra. Harry's group was excellent, but Harry knew Tommy Dorsey's group was a step above. Harry gave Frank his approval and wished him well in his new endeavor with Tommy. Frank was ALWAYS grateful to Harry James for that.
