What sabres are you using this time?
I'm using the VB Sabre Light and Max has got a Regenyei Light.
Hey, you're finally back. My friend, how is your mustache doing?
I like your mustache
1:16 Damn! Nicely done!
One point that I don't think was stressed enough is the added protection that the Pro guard gives over the other models. I wouldn't use the other sabres without heavy gloves. I use rapier gloves with my SIGI pro and the guard gives more than enough protection. The author says he wouldn't wear gloves lighter than Red Dragon gloves with this sword. I've never had an issue and gladly sacrifice the limited risk for the mobility.
I don't know anyone personally who only uses light gloves for steel sabre so that might be a culture thing depending on where you are.
He's immortal. Those are not purchases, they are war trophies.
Beautiful out of tempo attack at 3:12
Also looks like the VB light is really faster than the Easton. Did you consciously try to slip more tactically?
Yes and yes!
Nice! Max's shoes are sliding a lot on the notoriously dusty floor of that specific gym 😁
Thats not only my shoes though. I get the feeling that my weight is too much in the front and that makes the slipping worse
It may look like it's easy. No it's not❤ I just hope one day to be as skillful.
I really wanna learn sabre sword fighting but couldnr find any in vienna Only long swords and fencing
Try Klingenspiel in Wien!
Your mustache sir is magnificent.
The 1796 reminds me of the blades used on ODM gear in attack on titan, especially with the hilt. The only difference is the straight blade that was in the anime
Saber best girl.
If you grew your hair out long, you'd look exactly like the famous portrait of Vlad Tepes 😅 lemme see them canines to be sure
Haha, I've heard many looks comparisons in my time on TH-cam but never this one!
watch te difference of the soles of the shoes! Blue is slipping, the heel is also not working like the white shoes.
That's a pretty good observation and now I can't unsee it haha!
Polish mountain!!!!
Why can i never find a sparring safe 19th c infantry sabre? Every sabreur seems to fence cavalry.. on foot!
I don't know what you mean honestly!
2:49 outstanding!
Yep, he got me there very nicely!
why is nietzsche teaching me about sabres
Lovely spar!
And also, it just makes you look dang cool. Also, any tips for anyone looking to get into HEMA without any clubs around? One day I’ll probably be able to join one, once I move, but can/should I practice until then or should I just wait?
You can practice footwork and basic cutting mechanics by yourself. Make yourself a pell out of some wood and rope and you're good to go! Critical fencing skills like timing and distance management is only really possible with a partner.
Nice feints and moulinettes! Great bout 🔥
Thank you!
The only reason I started doing hema lol this looks so cool
vlastním šavli k vaší pochvě (pouzdru) model 1869 mužstvo značená 4,L.U.R. což znamená domobrana hulánský regiment posádka umístěná v Olomouci
I love those saber hits where its just an exchange followed by a moments pause of "bruh really" followed by a slap to the face xD
I envy people who can move so naturally in protective gear.
I empathise with this sentiment. Make sure you get the right size gear, that's a good start. Also, I'm not wearing very thick fabrics for sabre, so that helps aswell.
Your gear must not impede movement because your skills will not develop and it puts you at a disadvantage. Do whatever is necessary to make it work...modify or replace it. I've cut and re-sewn brand new gloves for a better fit...added extra foam in the mask, sternum strap to suspenders etc.
How heavy are their sabres?
about 850 grams!
@ oh that’s pretty good. I thought it was 1kg+
I believe Max (Green) uses a Blackfencer 1803 Slotted Hilt - around 830g, and Peter (Red) a Kvetun Slotted Hilt version of the Easton Sabre around 850g
@@BetterExplanation Yeah, that's manageable for sure but it's definitely more tiring than a later 700g sabre.
This spar was just beautiful!
Nice job! Sparring as it is in the real world. Not much point work though?
Thrusting with sabre is a gamble because you’re liable to lose your neck if you’re not 100% sure
@gavinrn Not at all. Thrust with opposition and it's fine.
It's true we didn't thrust a lot in this video but I usually do with other opponents.
@@SwordScience if you can perfect the sabre thrust, you have given yourself an advantage as most don't know how to deal with it....the fastest way to inflict a decisive hit.
@@chrismorgan1336 Counter-attacking with the thrust against cuts is also great.
Erster! What a cool feint at 2:40 👌
What is this shabre model ??
Which one?
That's a beautiful mustache
I wonder if there's an Indo-European form or it's related to *sek- and *sahs and separate? Proto-Germanic *sabjiō? 'I separate'? I've heard of Huns bringing the saber.
Interesting topic, well thought out and demonstrated.
Never been here, but less than three seconds in and I'm convinced I trust this dudes expertise on sabers. And most other things probably.
Ur leiwand! Muss mir mal Zeit nehmen und mich im Klingelspiel anmelden, dass ist die einzige Fechtschule in Wien die den Säbel unterrichtet...oder täusche ich mich da? Liebe Grüße
Could you do some video(s) on the possible origins of the curved swords as a whole in Europe and Asia? It's existance and use seems very "difusionistic" (in anthropological therms), rather than "structuralistic". It really does seems that a single cultural group (and I bet central asia) created it and spread it's use to other cultures.
Hi there, I'd need to do more research to cover this well enough but I have thought about it!
I thought it came from the tigers who had teeth of the same shape 🤣🤣🤣
Interesting, I thought the word is a Hungarian invention, as it is meaningfull in that language: "the thing that cuts".
❤ I love all swords. But you forgot to show great great grandma of all Sabres... The Indian Talwar
Very good! Do you have any evidence for 'sabres from the Balkans' in the 7th and 8th Centuries? The Avar proto-sabres are there in the Great Hungarian plaine from 670 onwards.
You mentionned Le Dictionnaire de l'Académie française. Nobody use it in France, not the general public and not the specialists, it's a joke. the more popular dictionnary are Larousse et Le Robert that are updated each year. It was already a joke at the fundation of l'Académie Française. It is consitantly outdated they produced only 9 edition in 350 years. The Académie Française is composed of old french personality, they are almost never qualified in linguistic.
Hey, thanks a lot for the comment! I knew the Academie is very conservative and not regarded highly in linguistics outside of France but I didn't know it had the same reputation in the country. Learned something new today!
**approving saber noises**
Long awaited return of the mustache!
I know my trust in saber sword video when i see a guy with French mustache in video
We also have the grammatical angle. Szablya as the thing which "szab"-s, that is, cuts. This then directly connecting to tesak/tasak -> dussack in German, all meaning "chopper, lopper." (And in modern day Hungarian, "Szabo'," a cutter (of cloth, to make garments, aka, a tailor). Etymologically the same word. So its literal translation is in use in Central Europe long before the Bathory era.
Yep, Stachowski and many others mention the "szab-" connection aswell and it's pretty self-evident for Hungarian speakers I guess. I haven't come across the tesak angle in this context, I thought that came from Czech "fang". Is there a direct connection?
@@historyandsabre Have never heard of "fang" in connection to it, only some variation on English "cutter." (just as "Sabreing" is often synonymous with cutting in early-modern sources)
Can you make a video talking about why Sabers replaced straight swords and how their design was advantageous in battle?
Hi there, sabres never replaced straight swords, they always coexisted! Sabres do have some physical advantages in cutting through a target but it's also often tradition and/or fashion that decides what sword you carry. Cheers!
Good to see you have some time to make a cool video. Nice presentation. I like the linguistic tracery that you do here. Cheers!
Hey, thanks very much!
Peter, this is killer work. All of your content is awesome, but this is a wonderful summary both in how concise and how much information you are able to pack in while showing the limitations we have with current research. My pet area of study is proto sabres/ early period nomad sabres, and by chance I am also running through and collection 16th-17th century dictionaries and collecting various terms for swords as the translate between the languages of the time. The earliest entries I have for 'saber' in each case do seem to refer to curved blades still; for example From 1554 Dittionario ital. franc. tedesco latino e: By Levinus Hulsius Italian: Storta, spada torta aguifa di falce French:Baraquemar, ou baraquemart, m Latin: Harpe, ensis falcatus German: Ein Krumbchwert/Sabel Keep up the awesome work!
Hey there, thanks for the comment and for sharing - very interesting stuff you added here!
