I love finding our about WW1 & WW2 historic sites such as bunkers/forts as well as other general war interests. I used to fly and have a keen interest in aviation and will branch out from Fort, Tanks bunkers into some more aviation interests.
A Gloster Meteor Air crash - sadly one of many but for this individual pilot his very last flight.
This is the story of RAF Flt Lt Peter Stacey's last flight. I was going to look at the aircraft type and why it had such a bad reputation killing about 450 RAF pilots in non-combat operations and having almost 900 crashes from engine failure on take off or go arounds but the story of its pilot I found more interesting and I got distracted by his story. I hope that I have been respectful and to help bring back and honour his heroism in the last few moments of his flight in 1988.
I think it is important to remember our Ghosts from the past and Peter Stacey's last flight and actions are interesting. I found some video footage and eyewitness reports plus the MOD Accident summary which conflicted with one of the eye witnesses statement where they talk about the engine making no sound.
Whatever the cause I hope Peter Stacey is remembered in Coventry and as we approach Remembrance Day I thought it would be fitting to remember Flt Lt Peter Stacey. I will be placing a cross for him at my local war memorial on the 11th of November and hope others will remember him as well.

German here. The helmets, leather, steel and tombac ones are simply ,Helm mit Spitze' ( Helmet with point), Pickelhaube ( plural Pickelhauben) , literaly pickaxehood, was only a popular nickname, never official term.
wasn´t it lederhaube? Helm mit spitze klingt etwas unformel....
@@Femboy_housewife : As far as i know, Helm mit Spitze was official term. There had been different types of leatherhelmets in german language countries in 19th/ early 20th century. One Type was for example Raupenhelm, with a padded ,worm' (Raupe) on top, used by bavarian troops until 1886 (88?) ,by liechtensteinian troops until 1867. Other helmets , similar to Helm mit Spitze in leather or metal had a large high crest on top, mounted Regiment of french Garde Republicaine uses it still today, those helmets had been after 1866 more an austrian thing. Then there was the Tschapka, a small leather helmet with a flat, tip down pyramide on top, was used by lancers/ Ulanen to remember the polish origin of Ulanen ( see square top caps of polish Presidents Guard). Then there had been the helmets of palace/ Guard units of the smaller german states. Those palace units, often not realy included into german army system, for example bavarian Hartschiere, had often unregulated helmets/headgear for tradition reason ( and Reservatrechte). So in Germany, country of 150% 150%ness only Lederhaube? Doubtfull. But on the other hand: There had been in late middleage, perhaps early 16th century helmets called Beckenhaube, the visorless helmets of Landsknechte had been called Deutsche Sturmhaube, the spanish Moiron was also called Spanische Sturmhaube, and the visorless helmets, replacing closed cuirassiers helmets during Thirty Years War ( or british Parlament Wars) had been called Zischägge or Orientalische Sturmhaube ( compare neckprotection of Zischägge with neckprotection of helmets of Imperial Germany. I hope, my armchair knowledge helps.
thank you for providing so much good information !!
@@Femboy_housewife : As far as i know, this type of helmet was called Helm mit Spitze. This helmet , leather version, was used by line infantry and Dragoner/ dragoons ( to remember the mounted infantry orgin of Dragoner), the leather one with ball was for artillry, to prevent accidents of guncrew. The metall ones had been used by prussian, bavarian and saxon heavy cavallry ( mostly cuirassiers) and by arround 1890 new created Jäger zu Pferd/ mounted Jäger, also by some pure palace soldiers, for example the Leibgendarmen. Leather version was also carried by officers of firebrigades ( ordinary firemen used a helmet with crest), and policemen, perhaps also other armed personal of civilian administration. Other troops wore other leather helmets, the lancers ( Ulanen) a small helmet with a flat, tip down pyramide, called Tschapka,to remember polish origin of Ulanen ( see the traditional polish squared soldiers cap, still worn at least by polish Presidents Guard). Another leather headgear was the Tschako, worn by Jäger, some older Reserve soldiers ( Landwehr/ Landsturm), and socalled technical troops ( Pioneer/ Engineer, Radio, Telephone/ Telegraph, Railway, Post, ground Personal for Ballon, airships and planes, fortress) and Independent MG companies. Only non leather headgear ( with exeption of fieldcaps ).had been cylindrical hussars caps, as far as i know, fur, reinforced with cardboard. Then the nonprussian rulers had their palace soldiers, not much, here unregulated headgear, Caps and helmets had been used. ( Best uniforms of Imperial Germany had been worn by colonial Police in Papua- New Guinea :-)))).There had been times, when helmets had been called Haube. But Beckenhaube, or Sturmhaube was used from late middleages to perhaps 1700. The german type of Landsknecht helmet was Deutsche Sturmhaube, spanisch Moiron was Spanische Sturmhaube, and the open cavallry helmet of Thirty Years War was called either Zischägge or Orientalische Sturmhaube ( compare this helmets to arabian, persian, indian helmets) and compare neckprotection of Zischägge and neckprotection of Imperial German metal Helm mit Spitze.

Hi Its in a WW1 fort Fort Pompelle in France - here it is on google maps : maps.app.goo.gl/iAAphZnjBU7pXigx6 Well worth the visit if you can.
i think fort de la pompelle near Reims
Excellent thumb nail, I saw a similar one sell recently in Florida USA. I own my families P1796 style prussian saber from the same time period. Early Prussian and Spanish American war items are my favorite.
Pleased you found it interesting. I wasnt sure if anyone else would even want to watch this sort of thing. I think its amazing the quality and styles they used back then.
@@samparkerSAM : The prussian saber is in Germany called Blüchersäbel after Feldmarschall von Blücher, real name was, as far as i know, M1811. A saber , based on this type , was in Eastern Germany used until 1989 for parades.
Wow, what was the cuirass at 0:42, my greatgrandfather has one during WWI. But when we asked our grandmother, she always said " he beared it at the parade", what wasn't a very sasisfying answer. lol
interesting to hear ! :) the equipment is beautiful - very highly decorated.
2mins in - Sawback Bayonets - were used by pioneer and machine gun troops to clear vegetation and other obstructions. Sawback blades were also carried by non-commissioned officers (NCOs) as a symbol of rank. The Allies viewed this as a "banned" weapon and made protestations as to its use - they viewed its use as a crime. When used in combat, the WW1 sawback bayonet with 29 razor-sharp teeth became extremely unpopular for all sides for a number of reasons. The first was due to when it was thrust into the enemy. The sawback edge would tear out the insides of the victim leading to gruesome injuries and prolonged, agonizing death. As a result of Allied soldiers began torturing and executing on-site any German soldiers captured with such weapons in revenge. Consequently, the German High command made a decision to recall all of the German sawback bayonets in 1917 and grind off the saw back edge before reissuing them to all units.
Very interesting! I didn't know theses were banned.
If you get chance to visit the fort where this collection at at Fort Pompelle its maps.app.goo.gl/9zur7chDoz5qGBYy5 It sounds like you would enjoy it !! Have a watch of the Ebel Emal fortress on my channel if you are into WW1 & WW2 things also Fort Casso was amazing - lots of working equipment demonstrated.
PS Thank you for Subscribing - Im hoping others my find what I find interesting good for them as well. Im trying to improve the quality as well and hope to get better.
@@Hamishtarah: According to Matt Easton ( scholagladiatora) also british troops had sawbackbayonnets in small nubers ( but kept quiet about). Had been also used by german medics, to Cut branches and use IT to fix broken bones or to build improvised carry devices for wounded soldiers.
great extra info - thanks for posting.
10seconds in - If anyone knows the stag head and antlers badge meaning / regiment please let me know. Love the intricate design. thx
Could be a vraiant of the "Hofjagd-Ehrenzeichen" a badge of honour of the royal court hunting (hofjagd is difficult to translate). In anyway it's related do with hunt and game . The stag head is Sankt Hubertius' symbol (Saint Hubert, patron saint of game hunter and those working in the woods).
I found the same on sale on the Internet: Here's the description: Deutsches Reich 1871-1918 Kaiserpreis für Jäger und Schützen - (german Empire 1871.1918) Emperor's Prize for huntera and riflemen. The meaning is of the symbol is as mentionned before.
Amazing info thanks !! :)
Miss Lee certainly knows how to make baseball interesting.
aw mannnnnn wish I could have them on my shelvesss
yep - they are an amazing collection - they are in perfect condition and its so good they are now preserved/looked after as they are an interesting historic items. I wasnt expecting to see them where they were - ie a small unknow French fort. I think they should be in a formal museum for more people to see.
@@blimeythatwasclose In a smaller location they probably receive more support. In the Musee de armies they would be in a basement, ... got to make a trip to vist Marengo, however the video you made is extremely interesting. Have you seen the 1930s film The Black Hussar?
Very true. I Havn't seen the film but will look for it at the weekend. Thanks for the suggestion.
