Eames Chair Gas Lift Replacement

In this video, I'm going to show you how to replace the gas lift on an Eames type chair. Mine was a "Softpad" style chair. The other problem that I came across was that the chair was actually too low for...
Shimano Freehub Service
มุมมอง 126K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Replacing an old Shimano Freehub is expensive if you have to buy a new wheel with it or sometimes impossible if it is now obsolete. Sometimes it just gets a little sticky as the grease dries up which is especially apparent in winter as the cold weather stiffens up the old, dried-out grease and the hub begins to slip. This can be inconvenient or even dangerous if it happens on a busy road. There...

Neutral Density Filters Explained
มุมมอง 355 ปีที่แล้ว
So, what do Neutral density filters actually do for photographers ? In photography, a neutral density filter or ND filter reduces the amount of light entering the lens. what did you use to cut the sensor? mine is also slightly too big and I have to cut off the adjustment. Also my pedal sensor isnt really locking in place - I put it on and the C clamp ring over it, but i dont see how that will stay on without falling off - if i hit a couple of bumps that sensor thats supposed to lock over the pedal will definitely fall off. Its the universal sensor too

    • @geartechstuff3592
      @geartechstuff3592 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I cut the bracket off the sensor with a small metal hacksaw which works well. My pedal sensor (magnet ring) stays on and locks in place on the square crank shaft with the spiky split washer and C ring. For added security, I have now attached the extension arm onto the magnet ring which helps to keep it securely in place and makes it a little harder to steal. The extension arm is cable-tied onto the pedal arm.

      @@geartechstuff3592 I never got the extension arm part - not sure they send those anymore, or maybe just not with my model 🤷🏽‍♂️ the sensor just doesn’t seem very secure to me, even with the C ring on it - I’ll play around with it and see what I can do. Thanks for the video and the feedback

    I have a gen 1 battery, which is useless after it reaches less than 50%, how is this new battery? also the motor is only 250W how do you find the power?

    • @geartechstuff3592
      @geartechstuff3592 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The battery seems ok so far after 9 months. I mostly do short trips so the battery usually lasts ok. I did do a longer ride of 9 miles and it started to cut out intermittently which is about the halfway mark of the alleged range. I was on full power the whole time though with some hills and some periods of not pedalling. I wouldn't trust it to go the full 20 miles though. 250 watts is fine for my usage, more power would be good but I think 250W is the legal limit here in the UK.

    the Pedal magnet wheel, how will that spin if you taken off the arm?

    • @geartechstuff3592
      @geartechstuff3592 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, the magnet ring has some removable spiky grips in the centre that grip onto the square shaft of the crank so that it rotates with the crank. So you can remove the arm if there is a gap of 2 to 4mm between the pedal arm and the bike frame. I believe the extension arm is for when there is no gap between the pedal arm and the bike frame. In that case, you have to remove the spiky grip halves and secure the ring by cable-tying the arm to the pedal arm and carefully aligning it to spin true around the crank. You can leave the arm on in any case for added certainty.

    thanks for sharing. im wondering if its really necessary to remove the hole freehub body, or using the tool (with 2 grip points) to have access to bearings. om my bike, its a cartridge bearings. i tried to remove from the non drive side with a 12mm Alen key but its way to tight. looking to the construction of the hub, im wondering if i really need to take it out, or simply opeining from the drive side...what you think? thanks

    • @geartechstuff3592
      @geartechstuff3592 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Gledii, that’s a very interesting idea, I never tried that! I guess if you can get the bearing cup (with the two notches in it) off, without removing the central Allen key retaining bolt, the outer case of the Freehub might slide off giving access to all the inner small bearings! Let us know if you try it and if it worked! I did find that, that bearing cup was super tight and you have to undo it clockwise (ie the reverse of a normal bolt or nut)

    I don't suggest using just 15mm and 17mm to adjust the rebound when you want the axle to be as smooth as possible because literally you need a bench vise for it. There is a good chance that your 17mm lock nut will move together in the other side.

    Hello sir. Can you tell me where you bought the new gas lift or does any chair gas lift fit .?

    • @geartechstuff3592
      @geartechstuff3592 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello The Eames style chairs seem to have a different sized gas lift diameter than other brands: This is my understanding: Eames style = approx 38mm diameter. Other office chairs = approx 50mm diameter. I couldn't find anyone selling these in the UK so I went online and found this company: Domini Design They appear to be based in Hong Kong but I'm sure my gas strut was delivered from inside Europe, either Netherlands or Ireland (as there are contact phone numbers for both of these countries). Be aware that the delivery costs more than the product for delivery to the UK so I paid over £40 UK for product and delivery. (Delivery costs are probably even more if you are outside of the Uk or Europe). This is the link that should hopefully take you to the page I used: You have to select the length you require (i chose the maximum size of 230mm - just the black section length), choose the length that best suits your needs. dominidesign.com/gb/eames-gaslift-gaslift-high-black.html Please note that this is not an endorsement of their products, service or delivery and I am not an affiliate for this product. I cannot say if this is a genuine product or an after-market reproduction. All I can say is that the product seems to work well so far and it was delivered within 2 to 4 weeks if I remember correctly. Hope this helps.

    As a few viewers have pointed out that I didn't cover how to split the freehub in much detail at around 2:00 minutes into the video, I will include a few more details here: The double-notched cone nut was very tight and I didn’t have the proper tool so along with a friend, we put a sturdy screwdriver in each notch and then hammered them together in sync, clockwise until we cracked the tight seal! Then you can loosen the 10mm central Allen bolt and knock the notched cone nut around clockwise til it comes out. Having the proper tool with the two lugs for the notches would make the job much easier! Here's a great video of how to make your own double lug tool that fits into the double notched cone nut to help split the freehub, you'll have to measure the hole to check what sized socket will fit though as the freehub sizes can be different: th-cam.com/video/1qBk5pePGRg/w-d-xo.html

    Listen, mate, it would be good to pin a comment letting people know about the bit you "glossed over". I spent ages on this, after buying a lockring removal tool, only to find I can't get into the freehub without another special tool or risk whacking it with a pair of screw-drivers.

    • @lettersquash
      @lettersquash 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      And it's also worth noting that you can degrease and re-lubricate the freehub without disassembling it - just soak it in mineral oil or similar, keep taking it out and turning it, and you should wash most of the old oil and grit out, then re-lube along between the moving parts, repeatedly turning the mechanism again. th-cam.com/video/iQ6XgztsfmU/w-d-xo.html
