That's a great catch. I forgot to put a "n" before "TEL" in the phone number part of the excel file. That's what caused it to not read properly. I just updated the file on the Google Drive, feel free to redownload and test again. Thanks for catching that. One small character missing and the whole thing blows up on you.

No, it won’t. For fore edge printing you would need to set up a completely different file based on the book’s thickness and height. Usually it would be best to contact your printer to get specs on the dimensions required for the fore edge artwork.

You got the PPD in the correct folder? Also make sure it is in all versions of InDesign you have installed. With the way they update, you have to make sure it’s in all the versions of ID.

@@miketheprintman Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I've double checked those a few times and it still doesn't work. For reference I'm using the latest InDesign 2024 software and I've downloaded the PPD file and copied it into Applications>Indesign>Presets>PPDs folder>[the file]. Am I missing something or doing something wrong?

@@saghimalekanian7275 You have your folder named as "PPDs" only right? Not "PPDs folder". If it isn't named that exact name it won't work. Let me know.

@@saghimalekanian7275 Last thing I can think of is when you go to print, you're selecting Postcript File under printer right? Once you make that selection the Adobe PDF 9.0 PPD should show up. If you don't have it selected as a Postcript file it will probably point to a local printer. Let me know. Sorry, had to diagnose the problem without seeing your setup.

The image in the center does require some testing. I had to shrink it down a couple of times before it worked properly, but it does scan. There is a certain percentage of the code that can be covered and still work.

If you have text placed in, say from a Word document, you can autoflow your text when you make your text box. It will auto fit to the margins of each page. To do that, go to file -> place and select your word file. When the cursor appears with the text loaded, go to the top left hand corner of your first page, hold shift + alt or shift + command (mac) and it will auto flow your text and automatically created new pages. If you don't want it to create new pages and just use whatever pages you have in your InDesign document, just hold shift. If you already have a text box that has overflowed text in it, select the box with the + symbol in the bottom right hand corner, that will load all your text and you can then do the same thing, holding shift or shift + alt/cmd to make it flow. Hope that helps.

Hi Doug. The preflight fixups are built directly into the Adobe Acrobat preflight. You can customize some of the features for each fixup by choosing different options associated with each fixup, but you cannot create a fixup from scratch. If you're looking to modify the fixup I used in this video, just follow the steps I outline, but instead of settings it to delete all text for instance, set it to delete all paths instead. That should work for your entire 166 page PDF. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching.

I tried to get to a preflight screen where I saw what your screen showed and even slowed down the video but failed to get the menu options to the left or the dropdowns to be the same. I'll watch again and see if I can pull off the switch from delete all text to delete all paths.

Agreed. Maybe in the near future Adobe will incorporate that directly into Acrobat. Do keep in mind though, that this only works for images and not PDFs or vector files. Otherwise you have to try one of the Preflight functions to add bleed in Acrobat Pro.

@@miketheprintman I agree on it only working on raster images. That's just how the "AI" works. Then again, for vector files, you can edit them to fit in Illustrator etc. And yes, I have the bleed preflight on short all the time. Great tool.

Have tried several tines to use this but “Generate Expand (Beta) is greyed out (not available). Have tried all formats including raster images with same failure. My InDesign is up to date with all the Beta options. What am I missing?

Just noticed I had not defined an area of desired expansion. It works perfectly.

You can use a preflight to grayscale. Acrobat has a built in preflight called “Convert to Grayscale” however, it will grayscale the whole document.

Oh actually can run the preflight and only apply it to certain pages. At the bottom of the preflight window you’ll see a checkbox that says “Preflight only pages” there you can set what page you want to apply the preflight to if you don’t want it to run through the whole document.

The text box should always be big enough to accommodate the longest part of your data source. A good tip is to create the merged document and InDesign will automatically show any overset text. You can then adjust those individual pages to fit and then export as a pdf for print.
