Nice job with this video, thanks for sharing. You have a new follower.
Thank you. I appreciate that very much. Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching.
Hi, If I need to work with a multi-page PDF file, how can I specify the path in Excel? Since the file path will be the same for all, and the file name will also remain consistent, is there a parameter that allows me to indicate which page to include?
So are you looking to do a variable from multiple PDFs, but want to specify just one particular page to place into your illustrator document, so I have that right?
Thanks for sharing this. It is interesting.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
thank you! This is so helpful :) also like your rich black tutorial, very clear and it works
Thank you. I appreciate the view and comment. More content coming soon, please share and subscribe for more!

Really informative, would love to see a video on the opposite - Pantone colours to CMYK conversion. I had a PDF advert recently, where it contained two spot plates, one named as the official Pantone name, and another custom colour named after the brand. In the end as it was destined to a 45L offset, we used print production, convert colours - but would be interested to see your approach to this. There must be a more accurate way, we did also try ink manager but it didn't seem to work. Anyway, keep up the great videos.
Thank you. I’ll put it on my list of videos to do. I’ve got some lined up coming this month once the new year rolls around. Stay tuned. Thanks for watching.
Mike, you're the type of creative who has valuable knowledge, expertise and experience gathered over years of hard work in Repro, design agency who enables and helps other creatives to achieve the required result. I salute you. 👍🏼
Thank you for the kind words. I'm just trying to impart some of my knowledge for those who come after me have a decent enough reference point. I wish videos like this were around when I first started in this business, I would have found them super useful. Thanks for watching.
This is a fantastic tip to create custom line rules/stroke styles. I never knew, I didn't know! 👍🏼
Very useful. Thank you for sharing. 👍🏼
You got it. Glad it helped.
After all the years of using Aldus PageMaker to Adobe InDesign for various design projects, strangely, I have never used the data merge function. Tutorials like yours, gives me and I am sure others the confidence to use data merge. Every day is a school day and it is always of interest to see how other creatives use the many menu functions of InDesign for design and print projects. 👍🏼
@@michaelmccrory2220 very kind words. Thank you. Warm wishes this holiday season.
Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge 🎉
No problem. Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching.
It should not effect accuracy? it just lack the new colors that Pantone adds every year. right?
If you absolutely need 100% accuracy, then the Pantone bridge is the way to go. However, these swatches are going to get you about 98% of the way there. I wouldn’t worry about them being very far off from the actual printed PANTONE books.
@miketheprintman i don’t understand why? if they are preexisting colors from the former Adobe versions: Pantone does not change existing colors (that would render older designs absolute), they just add more every year.
@@denblaakop I think the whole falling out between Adobe and PANTONE had to do with money (of course). If you have older colors, I don't see what the big difference is, like you said, nothing really much changes. PANTONE claims that their old swatches were out of date and that users needed updated versions. The ironic thing is that ink comes from a can and is set on press, so there is always going to be some issues with what you see on the screen not 100% matching the ink from the can anyway. I think it was all just a cash grab and to make our lives as designers harder.
@ 1. Another company (some Medical giant) actually bought up Pantone, think that was what happened (don’t know so much about it. 2. Exactly, the inc is defined by the color name/code not what we see on the screen 3. It is of course possible that Pantone has gotten better at simulering the correct colors on the screen. But if these swatches was good enough for me to design packaging with them in 2020, they still are… anyways, I bought them, because I hate Pantone Connect 😅
Btw. They do add new colors, so it gives more options to use the Pantone connect, but there is plenty in your collection for my needs.
Just purchased. Thanks so much!
Thanks for supporting the channel. Glad it helped.

which version did this first become available? i'm using v 9.0. maybe it's time for an upgrade?
I did this in Acrobat CC, but Preflight has been available as far back as CS2 I believe. Maybe not all the features are there for version 9.0. Yes, could be time for an upgrade.
THANK THE GODS FOR YOU!!! Thank you thank you thank you, $5 CAD is more than fair. Appreciate you

No problem.
That’s what I do also! Especially when you get into heavier 300+ gsm cover
You got to. The real heavy stuff is just too stiff to curl around those small paper paths.
Awesome! Thank you for sharing this, it worked for me for Illustrator 2025 :)
Hi, I´m not able to make the changes in the preflight edit setup. The edit button is greyed out. I need to get overprint for a specific color, "CutContour". This is the color my cutter use for cutting path and I do not want this to be knocked out. Is it possible for you to make on for me and export or what do you think I´m doing wrong. Thanks Patrik
You're probably trying to edit an existing built in preflight. There are some that come by default and are not editable. The best bet would be to make the fixup from scratch like I did in the video.
So helpful! Thank you.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching.
This channel is so awesome. Great tutorials, easy learning and everything is perfectly explained. I wish to watch more printing vids. Thank you Mike !!
I truly appreciate those kind words. Thank you so much. The plan is to take the money I've been making on TH-cam and Patreon to finance some at home equipment to do even more videos related to print. I'm just about at that range where I'm pulling in enough money. Hopefully soon. Thanks again for watching, I appreciate it.

cheers, what a life saver. For £3 a steal
wow. why is such a seemingly simple endeavor so difficult to do? adobe sucks as per usual
Agreed. This should such a simple thing.

Unfortunately the site hosting the colors is no longe available. I have these now available for sale on my Patreon page: www.patreon.com/MikethePrintMan/shop/pantone-color-swatches-for-adobe-703405?Link& They are available for purchase for $3, which is the lowest price I can set them to. I will do an updated video on this for the 2025 release of all Adobe programs when I can.
Do you know hot to format a Top-Bound book? Which Program would I use?
When you say top bound, do you mean a spiral or wire-o bound book that has the coils at the top of portrait oriented page?
@@miketheprintman Yes, sir.
@@JoelSuggsPGA Okay. I would suggest using InDesign, like in this video. The only difference is that the binding will be done at the top of the page, so you want to make sure to set your margins along the top edge instead of the left hand side. That's basically the only difference. I'm planning on doing another video down the road explaining the difference about the different type of book binding techniques and how to set up those files accordingly.
Life saver but unfortunately the website got shutdown or something, couldn't get the swatches
I’ll figure out some place to host these and I’ll update the link in the description.
I made this available for purchase on my Patreon page since the original hosting site it shut down. Since you already signed up for a Patreon account you get it for free. Thanks for pointing it out.
You dont need to create profile for this, just click on fixup tab in preflight, then option in top right and Search all Libraries. There are you need for quick fixing. BTW sometimes marks, are added manualy, and this fixup is useless.
I think that happened with my manuscript. I never could get this to work. Sigh...
What is the best practice of using black for digital press? Is it rich black?
It depends on what machine you are printing with. If you are using a wide format UV/Latex/Eco-sol inkjet machine, I would recommend a rich black mix. Inkjet will absorb into the sheet, and a rich black will help keep your black color nice and dense. If you're printing on a toner based printer, I would recommend using a pure black. If the black is not dense enough, most digital toner based printers have an adjustment press side to make the black denser. Of course if you're talking about text, I would always use a pure black for text, no matter what type of printer. If you use rich black for text you may have registration issues. Hope that helps.
Thanks really helpful & clear
Glad it was helpful!
Mike... you've done it again. I've said this on a previous video, but you legit read my mind, man. I literally Just wanted to learn adobe illustrator variable data and you've come up with a video breaking down Everything, as you always do 💯. Man, you are a legend, Mike 💯🔥 The amount of detail you know about all of this... Man 👏
You're welcome. I'm just happy that folks are getting good use out of these videos. I know when I first started in this industry, videos like this didn't exist. I'll have another one on doing this in Photoshop in the coming days, stay tuned.
@@miketheprintman Yea man, you're definitely giving us a lot of value, Mike. Actually, you've convinced me to never touch Adobe Illustrator VDP and just use InDesign's VDP 😂. It's great that you're sharing your knowledge. On a different youtube account I think I'm gonna start sharing what I've learnt also. Watching people like Y'all. Man, I'll watch a tonne of your other stuff also, that's awesome :)
@@wasdatheg1885 I appreciate those kind words, and yes, I encourage you to make videos of your own. It's great to share information and build the community of prepress graphic designers. I already subscribed to you for when you start making them. Good luck.
Thank you, could you please do variable on photoshop also
I will be doing one in the near future. Please stay subscribed and have your notifications on for all future videos. Thanks for watching.
I need to make time for this stuff. Or adobe illustrator in general, especially with all the new ai tools. Good vid mike
Thanks. Yeah, I still haven't played around with all the new AI features, but I know Illustrator is kind of a pain when it comes to variable data. I normally use InDesign, which handles it much easier. Thanks for watching.
I’ve done this before and it’s a pain. You would imagine that Adobe at this point would create some type of UI for VDP.
Honestly, that's why I use InDesign for most of my variable data work. I hate doing it this way because it's very tedious. InDesign handles VDP so much better through Data Merge. However, I know a lot of people will find this info useful, so I went ahead and did a video on it. Thanks for watching.
Yep. We certainly are glad you publish these videos. Than you again. FusionPro is nice if you get into very complex vdp...that is if you can stomach that price as well.
@@Hadriaxit That's the hard part right. A lot of shops are in that in-between part of their growth; not yet big enough to afford the expensive software, but still needing it at the same time. That's the tough part.
Thanks for the tip
You got it. Let me know if there is anything else you’d like to see about this model.
This is the video im referring to. The profiles that you created for this video are you able to make a video on how you created the profiles
Yes, I think I'll do a follow up on this one talking about color conversion in Acrobat. I'll put it on my list. Stay tuned.
amazing video.. I was wondering if you can do the same but with the PDF fix up. creating the fix up for converting to pantone. from scratch
Thank you. Not sure exactly what you mean though. Are you talking about converting the gold foil pattern to a specific Pantone color? If so, no you can't because the foil pattern is going to have a CMYK mix and it's not a vector. If you export the PDF with layers, you could always delete the non foil layers and then print. I think I will do a future video on maintaining the layers in a PDF for print. Thanks for watching.
@@miketheprintman sorry. On the video that you made a while back regarding changing CMYK to Pantone, you made some FIx-UP profiles in acrobat. Just wondering if you can make a video creating those profiles from scratch. I'll reply on the video im referring to.
@@pacosanchez-tk3mf Ah, yes, I know the one you're talking about. Maybe I'll do an update to that one. I have several that cover similar topics on swapping colors in Acrobat.
Nice workflow//Thanks for the tutorial! What if you have a printer which uses a fifth toner, let's say white or metal, would your workflow/steps stay the same?
Thank you. There would be some tweaks to the way the files are set, depending on what type of press you have. For instance, the Xerox Iridesse has 6 colors, so you can do the gold in line with the CMYK. We have a Xerox 280 with the vibrant kit, so we can do CMYK in one pass and then come back and overprint gold, silver, white or clear. So it depends on the machine, but the process would be the same if you're doing to do this as a silver foil, regardless of your printer.
Fantastic. Thanks so much for putting this together, Mike
No problem. Happy to help.
great video, thank you
You’re welcome.
While you do general printing jobs, I work with making and printing business documents using a Canon color laser printer, using letter-size laser paper, and a "professional" Brother P-touch label printer for printing labels and signs on laminated label tapes in a few colors. Your shop impresses me and I wish you, Mike the Man, lots of success and a long endeavor in your new shop. And I hope your work will never be done. 🖥🖨
Thank you for the kind words. Oh yes, work will never end.
When I run this on some files, it makes the black text appear gray. Is there any way to make the black darker?
Is it just appearing grey, or is the actual output grey? Check the Output Preview to see what the color breakdown is. The conversion may have made the text a black mix instead of a true 100% black.
Mike, please make a short video detailing the scalloped card graphic frame - shape creation & clipping, masking, knockout (can’t remember the word) as well as the “placing” of the foil pattern in the outlined font. I only know that trick with gradient swatches
You got it. I’ll put it in the list for next week.
@@miketheprintmanMuch appreciated
Hi, i'm a newbie with Adobe products. Could you explain me why i cannot find a fixup called "Generate bleed at page edges" but i've got "create bleed" and "Generate bleed from page content"?
Are you looking in the Adobe Preflight area, like in the video? Should be in the fixups section (wrench tool). If you already have those preflights in there you can edit them.
@@miketheprintman Yes i did everything exactly like you did in the video :( I'm using Adobe Acrobat Pro DC from 2019..
@ try the generate bleed from page content. That should be a similar set up. I think maybe because you have an older version of acrobat, that’s why the naming is different
