Birding in the Eastern Cape. Karoo Secret
Karoo Secret offers the chance of Sclater's Lark, a much sought after bird in South Africa. It is difficult to find and I have only seen them once in 4 visits to this working farm between Beaufort West and Aberdeen - you need to time it well and have patience. There is nevertheless an abundance of Karoo birds and probably what I love most is the feeling of wide open spaces and there is just you and 10 000 hectares of nothingness to explore.

My attempt to use a Floating Hide which did not work as there is a sharp drop off between shallow and deep water. I will have to wait until he river mouth closes and there are flooded margins. Warmer weather too but I am still optomistic for results with this hide. I used my stabilised canoe and still got good watebirds.

West Coast Birding from Velddrif

I based myself at Kuifkopvisvanger camping just outside Velddrif. This is a birding paradise. Kliphoek Salt Pans are next door and you are situated right on the banks of the tidal Berg River. The birding was simply magnificent. Red-necked Phalarope were on display and on the one windless day, photography was sublime

Cape White-eyes are one of the favourites in the garden. They breed here, often close to the house, or under the veranda.

Benguela Long-billed Lark is best found in the Brandberg region. I was visiting the dry parts of Namibia in pursuit of 4 larks which are most readily found here - Benguela Long-billed Lark, Gray's Lark (which I also found here), Dune Lark (found in Sossus) and Stark's Lark (between Aus and Walvis Bay). A highlight here was the Ruppell's Korhaans which were common and very vocal.

Stanford Bird Club assisted Cape Nature in conducting their CWAC (Co-ordinated Waterbird Count) at De Hoop Vlei (a RAMSAR site) on 8 February 2024. We counted 12 243 waterbirds over 7 designated scanning points that included 41 different species. It is a massive undertaking as the vlei covers a huge area.
