surveying fish stocks at Martham Angling Club. Norfolk
Tricky lakes to net, we uncover what's going on in each water to help the club maximise the future potential of their waters.
Each venue has its challenges. Here we look at siltation, erosion, encroaching phragmites, water quality and stock adjustments.

On Location at Lodden Lakes for Gillingham and District Angling Association. See the amazing stocks of Bream and other species. We hope this gives anglers and fishery managers a true insight into a typical day netting club waters and the challenges involved. Thanks to the club for allowing us to film and show off the improving stocks.

The effects of increased leaf drop, siltation, weed and tree growth have negative effects on some venues. The second lake in this film highlight why action needs to be taken. I repeat myself too much, apologies but you get the idea. I repeat myself too much.

Managing fisheries effectively. In our modern fishery management practice we must realise that the climate is unpredictable. Heat, flooding and storms lead to many issues that those involved in the successful management of waterways need to take seriously And adapt. For the full film follow @fishwithcarl

More really interesting insights into fishery management 👏👏👍 these videos really showcase your hard work and passion, I’m sure they will be used by some fishery owners and clubs as a reference in making their waters better. As a much younger I was the chairman of a club not so far away from the fishery in this video and can relate to your frustrations with some club committees. 😬😥. Keep up the good work, look forward to the next video 😊

I'm finding these videos really interesting and i think it open's peoples eye's about how things should be done to better a fishery. As it's not all about putting loads of fish in and hope all goes well. As your pointing out that good maintenance around the lake is just as important. Great video's please keep up with the good hard work you and your team are doing. Thank you👍👍

You obviously know what you're talking about. Put a side anything else, you employ and run a sustainable business. Giving Fishery owners and clubs positive results. So I have to come to the sad conclusion that fishery owners and clubs that keep stocking their waters when you advise otherwise are only concerned about putting profit Before the fish, they pretend to care about. I understand the concept of a commercial fishery Ease of access etc. But the biomass thing needs to be questioned, match weights of hundreds of pounds in 4/5 hours. Win a match with 35lb or win with 350lb a win is still a win, and wonder why the fish have no lips. If Cattle that can be seen were crammed into a field in the same way. In days, the farmer would be having a visit from the R.S.P.A. As angling is now predominantly on managed, still waters behind fences, it's time to look at the morality of biomass or will the shilling win out. As I shout into the wind.

I'm not anti match fishing. I believe it's the one discipline in angling that shows who's the most skilful angler. I'm not talking about the angler who fishes the same venue each week against the same group of anglers, who become just venue experts. In Competition, does it matter if you win with 25lb of fish or 250lb of fish. A wins a win. If cattle were treaded like fish in venues Where the biomass was so dense that big fans (aerators in water) had to be used to circulate oxygen around a field, and cattle dropped dead through the stress of it after being lassoed, there would be public uproar and The RSPCA knocking on the owners door. But no, this all happens under water out of sight out of mind. I understand the value of easy access waters with on-site facilities for an ageing angling demographic. But these overstocked match commercials needing aerators and restocking regularly are no more than aquariums, there for vanity and profit. Where your luckily to catch fish with lips in tactic, that would eat turds on the hook because theres so many competing for food. Match angling needs a reality check before some external body does.

No matter how many fish in a lake the match anglers expect 100lb of fish these days When u tell them that theres 7000lb of fish in the lake they still say there needs o be more stocked If every match angler was to watch what you remove and put back theyd be totally shocked of the quantity of fish Pleasure anglers are happy with just catching fish Thank you for these vids your showin

Some fisheries have double standards, different rules for carp angers and matchman. Carp anglers are told to photograph in the water in summer and then you see small carp piled up in match buckets . My point being when do carp suddenly become more important?

Hey Andrew, met you at Shearsby Valley when you netted/advised and I shot a feature for the mag 👍 Interesting content as always. I'd love to know how we could improve the match fishing process. Something we could work together on to try and spread the word of best practice perhaps? I'm around it every day and would love to see the weigh in process changed somehow. I know you don't necessarily like match fishing but if there is something we could get out into the mainstream that improves it then it could benefit everyone 🤞

I totally agree with your comment with regards to angling in the future being for the restricted few. As a carp for 40 yrs it is clearly becoming a case of who you know with regards to getting into a decent syndicate. I honestly feel that Angling is destroying itself from within which is very sad.
