And this is EXACTLY why I hated running SBI with Carbonel. He never gave a shit about the smaller teams who traveled the same distance, raced in the same rough water, and beat up their equipment. The smaller classes, A, B, and C never got any recognition, let alone video coverage. He was a piece of shit. IMHO.

back when offshore was actually offshore....

Used to watch these boats come out of the Manasquan inlet as a kid

My EOD unit provided safety recovery divers for this race, we were in 28" Boston Whalers spread throughout the course. The boat I was on was initially in the middle of the course and when the first wave of boats came charging past us I remember the fear as the big boats flew past us at full throttle on both sides of our boat. We immediately pulled anchor and moved to get out of the path. Two of the Navy divers that were also my best friends from my unit, James Thomas (RIP) and John Bubenik, were on the USN boat to first respond to the Jesse James boat accident. They were the closest boat to us as well and we watched as they recovered Mark Lavin and worked with the SAR swimmer from the helo that immediately flew out to them to pick him up and get him to a hospital. My buddies both said he was gone when they got to him not breathing and with no pulse, he sadly died on impact.

When I was a kid, I remember this race and it was just amazing. I remember going to all these races in Marathon, Key West, and off of Fort Lauderdale. I believe it was at the time this was racing at its absolute finest. And then you find out certain personalities we’re doing certain things and it all kind of came together. This was just a very great time.

I was born in 94. But dam, this is so cool.
