I am currently an executor of an estate. This song has been going through my mind as I try to figure out what to do with all the stuff.

I have seen Cheryl several times and always gives a great performance with very nice interaction with the audience. I absolutely love this song.

Thought of this song again while reading news from back east from family emptying out our mother's apartment.

I heard this once or twice when it got radio play when it came out, and both time I was half-asleep and missed the beginning, and SWEAR TO GAWD I thought it was about sneaking into homes of recently dead neighbors and taking their stuff. It made it seem so joyous and wholesome. Not knowing the title, it took me literal decades to finally find the video and hear the song in its entirety.

My Granny Bessie had the right idea. She called the Antique Man when she was leaving her house for a small apartment. She got as much money as she could out of the things she didn't want, then packed up the rest and took it with her. Then, when she moved again a few years later, she got rid of some more. She put everything she didn't need in boxes, and when we grandkids came to visit, she would tell us to go through the boxes and take what we wanted. Oldest kid got top priority. After she got cancer, she loaded off some more stuff. She knew she wouldn't be taking it with her. I still have a few things that were precious to her, that she could never bear to part with. I've hauled them around with me to three different houses. I suppose my kids will either keep them or get rid of them, but they never knew Granny--she died before they were born. When I'm gone, it won't matter. The things probably have no real value, but a few of them are books, so maybe they can bring joy to someone else someday. Just think of that, Janet. Maybe someone else can treasure your treasures for a while. I've always loved this song, from the first time we heard it. My kids love going to estate sales. Somehow, without my even telling them, they seem to understand that these things they are looking through, once belonged to someone else, and they love finding a "treasure" that the owner kept in good condition because they valued it. They don't rummage like greedy pigs. They love and appreciate old things, especially old books. My son and his girlfriend have furnished their house with estate sale finds, and they love each one.

Of all the insensitive songs! I hope when you get old and your son or daughter shunts you off to a nursing home, that all of your possessions are sold off for a dime on the dollar. May a bunch of greedy pigs force themselves through your front door. After all, why should you care if everything you owned in this world was sold off to a bunch of tacky people like you.

Except it specifies "dead people" who presumably don't care to be buried with their possessions. I think it's a nice song to find the silver lining and bring a bit of levity into a necessarily sad situation. And it even owns the fact that all of us will in time be parted from our stuff too.

Estate Sales are a respectable service that surviving members of families depend on. The people who buy things at estate sales help to support those family members. Calling them vulgar names is worse than any tongue-in-cheek song.

Geez, Janet, lighten up, already! Whom do you think would like to have your JUNK? What a grouch!

They are looking forward to much the same fate-or did you get too upset to actually bother listening to the song, Janet? Just because the song’s tone is lighthearted and fun doesn’t mean it’s making fun of the situation, in fact I find that giving someone’s possessions a second life (or third or fourth etc, as the case may be) is a beautiful way of honouring them and respecting the life they lived. Far better than shutting everything they ever touched up in a box forever and ever simply because they died and you’re sentimental or overly sensitive about material things. They exist to be used. Let them be, and honour their last owner in their use.

Oh Janet, if your dead who cares. This is meant to be toung and cheek.
