On December 5, 2024, the IVAN workshop was about Breaking Investigative Barriers with DNP: Targeting Solids in Biological and Engineered Materials.
Sensitivity has long been viewed as the Achilles heel of NMR spectroscopy, limiting its use to elucidate (macro)molecular structure and dynamics. Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) is a partnership between electron and nuclear spins that was introduced by solid-state physicists in the 1950’s, but high-field solid-state applications to structural biology, nanoscience, and pharmaceuticals required powerful microwave sources, versatile biradicals, and sweat labor that came to fruition only in the 1990’s. In this interactive workshop, three DNP experts will highlight their approaches for challenging targets and clarify both concepts and practicalities, helping you to decide if this approach is a good addition to your spectroscopic repertoire.
