The time to put an emergency kit together is NOW
Disasters can strike at any moment, and when they do, the last thing you want is to be unprepared. The time to put an emergency kit together is before a disaster happens.
An emergency kit is a container of essential items your family might need during or after an emergency. Most of these items are already in your home. The key is to gather them in one place where everyone knows they can find them.
You’ll need enough water, food, and supplies to last three to seven days for each person-and don’t forget about your pets. In the aftermath of a disaster, you may be on your own for hours, or even days. Being ready helps ensure your family’s survival and allows first responders to focus on those in immediate danger.
So, what should go in your Emergency Preparedness Kit? Start with these suggested essentials:
"Water - 1 gallon per person per day, for 3 to 7 days"
"Non-perishable food for 3 to 7 days"
"Battery-powered or hand crank radio, and a NOAA Weather Radio"
"Cell phone with a charger"
"First aid kit and a first aid book"
"Flashlight with extra batteries"
"Manual can opener"
"Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities"
"Blankets or sleeping bags"
"Prescription medications and glasses"
"Seasonal clothing, sturdy shoes"
"Toiletries: toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, feminine supplies"
"Extra keys for your house and car"
"Important documents: insurance policies, IDs, bank records"
"A fire extinguisher"
"Cash and change"
"Entertainment: books, games, or cards"
And in today’s world, don’t forget to add these items to help prevent the spread of viruses:
"Face coverings or masks"
"Hand sanitizer"
"Sanitizing wipes"
Once you’ve built a kit, take time to update it as your families needs change, removing expired food items, adding or changing out products as needed.
Taking the time to prepare now means peace of mind later. Remember, when disaster strikes, it’s too late to start planning. Be ready, stay safe, and protect what matters most-your family.
