Skiing through the apocalypse (Sierra at Tahoe, 1/5/2025)
A devastating wildfire a few years back has made Sierra at Tahoe one of the most unique ski resorts in California. I had a great day and can't wait to go back.

About as good as early-mid December gets! Remember to scout your landings, folks, and recognize the potential for sharks lurking just beneath the surface. Probably the longest of the (admittedly pretty few) snake runs I have encountered. Pretty steep too. First one was my second run of the day, second was mid-day (after I was much more warmed up).

These conditions are insane when I went hangman’s wasn’t even skiable and in this video the narrowest part of the chute was wider than a bus
@@Vince48758 Yeah, and this was still in January! You should have seen it in the spring
Yeah not a good season for the Sierra unfortunately. That was the last snow we've had. See you at peak house mammoth! I hope to get some tips from ya!
@@josephstratemeier8619 Dude can’t wait, its gonna be SICK! Yeah, thankfully we had a good December so hopefully we get some more snow in the forecast soon and we can get this season back on track!
What happened here why does it look like this? Is there a backstory
@@adamm3611 Big wildfire swept through the resort a few years back. Almost all of this terrain used to be glades
I was there Jan 4 and 5th as well - ended up doing mainline pocket a few times and it was pretty nice but there were definitely a few icy areas especially later in the day. Ended up in a similar position to 1:14 on a sheet of ice near Siberia and ended up sliding until i hit the soft snow 😂
What a shame. Was hoping to go back someday for nostalgia's sake, but nothing nostalgic about it anymore :(
Outstanding form! Super endurance. Revel in your time!
Even the apocalypse is fun so long as there is skiing.
When the apocalypse freezes over, I’ll ski there too.
Hopefully not all CA ski resorts will look like that someday. The snow looks freshhh though!
Yeah, seriously!!
What was the GCP line you did at 1:03?
I honestly have no idea what its called, its not in Squallywood but its just past Tight Wad and Robert Frost (far lookers’ right)
Wow, terrain looks super cool in the low-tide. Very excited to see you do the Huckleberry lines at some point!
It’s a neat place! I’m excited to check that area out too
Are you on the 104's or the 112's? Looks like the Deathwish.
@@vashusan1984 These are actually the Wildcat 108s!
@DaleySpam Oh nice!
Awesome!
You definitely have the "charging" part down. Youre aggressive and happy to push yourself over the edge. Thats a huge factor. To take your skiing to the next level, you might want to think about taking some advanced lessons to work on technique and aesthetics. In particular, optimal hip/knee angulation and proper pole planting. Youve got what it takes to be great, but its best to address some of these things earlier on before you develop subpar habits. It'll make your skiing more controlled and tighten aesthetics. Like golf, skiing is a sport where these is always room for improvement and new techniques - Its a lifelong pursuit. Not being critical... hoping to be constructive!
@@batman50ish Totally agree, and thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I know at this point I need to take a lesson to really level up. I have been working on my form recently and think I have improved a decent amount this year, but to really nail it I know a lesson would be invaluable
thanks for posting, especially the difficult part. I'm not sure what you were supposed to do from 1:14. Once you're standing across the slope, are you supposed to jump into the fall line and straight-line it? Or just get all weight onto the downhill ski, get the uphill ski out of the way, and just sideslip and pray?
@@KennethDuda If it were juts hard snow I’d say careful jump turns would be the best option, but this was so icy I legitimately couldn’t get an edge at all. Best move in retrospect would probably have just been to straightline, but I was at a bad angle to do that
One of the most overrated resorts in the West. Hope you guys get some decent snowfall. If not, fly into SLC and try Snowbird/Alta.
@@ghostpickle804 Have to disagree, I love it there, but Alta and Snowbird are amazing as well! Yeah, praying for snow
Ever think about trying the Sisters in Enchanted Forest area or is the runout too gnarly? Would also love to see a run on Oly Lady of you doing MCs
@@alexspreservationsociety Sisters is definitely something I want to check out, I’ve just never gotten to it early on pow day before. I actually did ski MCs last year but it was high enough snow to where I didn’t even find it video-worthy, maybe I’ll post something next time we get some new snow (which seems like it may be a while)
I swear Granite Chief has the most unpredictable snow conditions on that mountain. When you slid it reminded me of my past two tries up there.
@ Seriously! When its good it’s incredible, but then there are days like this where everything else is great but there’s just ice everywhere up there
Thanks for including the unsavory bits. Did you feel you went too far right in there? The previous person seemed fine on the left side.
Those were actually different chutes, the first one (that was my brother dropping in) was kind if chopped up but less icy. The one I chose was deceptively powdery right at the top before it quickly turned to solid ice. Couldn’t really tell from the top. The only good way to tackle it would have just been to straightline through the icy part, if I had known
13" of fresh powder wasn't enough to fully cover up a thick layer of rain crust, especially on the Granite Chief Peak. Very fun day, nonetheless!
Yeah buddy! Good shit as always.
I see the Enforcers are back. Rock ski duty?
@@claybrinkman533 yep, I did end up getting a deep gash up on headwall that day
PNW conditions is so accurate, that snow sounded super wet 😭
@@arjunski Yeah, we got lightly rained on a big that day. It was honestly quite fun, just very different than we’re used to out here
Soft snow asmr
This is from quite a while ago, but since I haven’t had a great day I NEEDED to make a post from in a little while and due to holiday business, I am very behind in uploads. I’ll have a few more similar videos coming out in the nearish future. Hopefully we get some more powder soon
Was just out today and yesterday and it was an ice sheet. I still have yet to post more videos about it though.
Nice, I was actually up there yesterday as well! Icy, but any day skiing is a good day
Yeah I was out at Sugar Bowl this weekends. Took my FIS GS skis out on Saturday and my SLs today, because blasting down hard groomers was all that was to be had. Fun nonetheless.
Watching your content has inspired me to put together my own content. I'd love to ski with you at Kirkwood sometime :)
@@SierraSkier-ln3pc Nice dude, your newest Kirkwood video is awesome! Yeah absolutely, I just have a one day epic pass this season so I’ll probably go in a couple months. I’d love to meet up!
@DaleySpam Do you mind if I use a screenshot from 0:41 as a reference in my video? I skied the chute and did the cliffs around it in similar conditions.

It took me 10 minutes to get down the dropout chutes, and I am astounded to see that you did Kiwi in 30 seconds lol
you gotta straightline it like he did cause there's mandatory air on the drop in and it's too steep and narrow to make turns at that speed
Adrenaline rock is rowdy. Go huck that doode.
have you ever skied at sugar bowl? Got some pretty gnarly stuff over there
@@GwendolynWeiland only once a long time ago. Yeah, I very much want to go again, they have some great terrain!
What DIN settings do you run at what height and weight if you mind me asking?
I'm 6'2" and around 175 pounds and my DINs are 10. They've popped off before, just didn't actually twist my legs much here (thankfully)
@ I have the exact same setup besides the wildcats being 179 and have my DIN at 8. Never had a twist release, maybe I’m not sending it hard enough. Similar height and weight to you too.
@@killingaurapvp3178 Yeah I guess its just all about the angle at which you fall

Back in my day we did not ski Climax as often b/c it kind of leaves you in no man's land at the bottom, unless you stay hard skier's left go get back to 3/McCoy, 23 or 1. But some great lines in there and easy to scope them from Gangholla.
Sick lines man! Glad you walked away unscathed. What are your dins set at? 😂

@@alexspreservationsociety they’re about the same, Hatchett might a a couple degrees steeper but Enger’s is narrower and more technical, I’d say
Always come back to this video to watch that Engerbretson’s run. My heart is pumping just watching it, normal people have no clue how deceptively steep that is.
I really like how you mentioned Squaw Valley; very cool and thanks!
Take a lesson man! You obviously shred super hard. It's so hard to improve at your level. Something that I have been working on this season is keeping my hands in front. Helps so much with charging the steeps.
