    I absolutely love this, the lot of it --- the music, the cinematography, the dramatic cut at the end. I played this for three classes of students today, using it as an example of someone (the poet, Seamus Heaney) detailing an experience of aesthetic arrest. There were a few of them who really got it, and I think seeing this short film helped them make the connection. Cheers, mate. Thank you.

    @monkeypeas, so often when someone on TH-cam adds video to someone reading it is, at best, a distraction; frequently it feels like a pretentious and self-important attempted hijacking of a piece of work. But this piece is absolutely wonderful in complementing the work. Each shot supports the poem without being maddeningly literal-minded. The music bed always remains in quiet service to Heaney's reading; never overpowering or grandiose. Well done, sir.

    mine is not as beautiful but I see from where it sprang. The same place. I can't wait to go back in May. I need to go back in August as well though. For Oistin, a shy singer Yes no one can be in two places at once Further, You can’t step foot in the same stream twice Yet I still feel the same centrifugal force sending My chest then head into the middle of this Peugeot Further Off the cliff and unto the sea Like a minute hand limping counter-clockwise But clockwise again. A gear given up its teeth The seaside blacktop weaving Dublin into Booterstown into Bray. The green line lolling off toward Greystones. I am there sitting upon the tidewet stones of the strand My chestnut boots halfwet from wave wash although I am here too Haunting this oil rig in the sage desert Where it is quite evident - a vacuum place where no one wants to be One of my better hands found a hideout in Gage, OK Free pool on Wednesdays folks sipping their way Through another workweek - a nurse from the old folks’ home - a codex of kindnesses and wear - Her expressions postures and laughs Kills a glass of cold gold beer Slaps four quarters in the old jukebox playing A handful of Meatloaf, Vince Gill A wobbly wispy haired feller in overalls announces he’s going to distract Barney Fife so we all better make our ways and means for home It’s not Tig Coili with Oisten’s timid grin proud song and gift pints But I feel like he’s standing there beside me The wool coat, guitar, and warmth periphery The cue ball clacks the six into an empty pocket but I hear fiddle cases clicking open the quick light metered chatter Friends make before taking up a song

    Transcript: And some time make the time to drive out west Into County Clare, along the Flaggy Shore, In September or October, when the wind And the light are working off each other So that the ocean on one side is wild With foam and glitter, and inland among stones The surface of a slate-grey lake is lit By the earthed lightning of a flock of swans, Their feathers roughed and ruffling, white on white, Their fully grown headstrong-looking heads Tucked or cresting or busy underwater. Useless to think you’ll park and capture it More thoroughly. You are neither here nor there, A hurry through which known and strange things pass As big soft buffetings come at the car sideways And catch the heart off guard and blow it open.

    Brobeans - get a couple of lessons. You need some veterancy to show you what you're doing wrong. Trust me, I was the same when I started snare drumming in a bagpipe band. I thought I was doing good - then I sat in with a Drum Sargent and he tore me to sheds. I got a lot better though - now I'm so thankful for his honesty. Now as a new fiddler - I am totally obsessed with getting the basics right first. You have some fast fingers - that's awesome - now get your bow grip looking good and your intonation better - even if you have to put a fret sticker on again - and you'll be performance ready. You're so close to kicking the beginner sound - it's inspiring Don't stop.

    Try leaning the fingers of your right hand inwards (so that your finger tips are pointing downwards away from the violin) this will help the pinky to stay curved on top of the bow stick, and will also help free up the right arm

    Great progress! Just make sure that you bow using your wrist and fingers going up and down instead of relying wholly on your elbow to give a smoother sound.

    • @monkeypeas
      @monkeypeas 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Yea this is definitely the part I'm finding the toughest. I'm used to playing guitar where you're told to use your elbow more, so its taking me a while to get used to loosening my wrist. Its great to know this will lead to a smother sound, thanks!

  • @smlacy
    @smlacy 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Some very simple things will improve your sound: - Play with the bow closer to the bridge. You look way up above the fingerboard, make sure you're pretty much right in between the end of the fingerboard and the bridge. - Try to keep your wrist straight on your violin hand (left). Don't let your palm touch the neck and don't squeeze! - Your bow hand looks a bit stiff. Curve fingers more, be more relaxed! - USE MORE BOW! Especially towards the end of the video you had very short bowing! Keep practicing!

    • @monkeypeas
      @monkeypeas 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for all the tips! Ive always found it tough to relax my bowing had without dropping the bow. I think I'm getting the hang of it recently. I definitely need to use more bow, its just the neighbours I'd be worried about!

    • @smlacy
      @smlacy 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't worry about being "too loud" because being "too soft" is way worse. One good bow hold exercise is to grip the bow without using your 1st finger or pinkie. The rest those two gently. Then lift & tap your 1st finger on the bow. Hold should still be firm. Try also tapping your pinkie. As others said, get a teacher! Need to eliminate "bad habits" early.

    • @smlacy
      @smlacy 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh also if you feel too loud, you could get a mute, but this will change your tone a bit, which isn't the best for other aspects of your playing. Can you practice somewhere else? Outside?

    • @monkeypeas
      @monkeypeas 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually tried using a mute but I hated how it sounded! So I'm slowly building up the courage to play loudly. The more i increase the tempo the harder I'm finding it to get in enough bowing. Thanks for the tips on balancing the bow will bear it in mind, this is the part i find the most difficult, to keep the grip relaxed but controlled. Ive a teacher now, and she's doing her best with me!

    Great progress and you got the talent :) However, I would recommend you to get a teacher. That will help you to fix wrong positions and you will improve much faster than you can imagine. You might not be holding the bow correctly and you are not using the whole bow... So a good teacher could help you with that. Good luck!
