Plane spotting on Lord Howe Island - the airport boundary is close to the runway and ideal for watching the arriving and departing QantasLink Dash-8 Q200's. Here's some videos I took in early December 2022. Apologies for the bad audio quality as the weather wasn't ideal. The Footy Show - Street Talk - Bendigo (04/08/2011)

Bendigo shows off it's finest citizens as Sam Newman visits town to do Street Talk.
Beautiful place ………but now you have to sell a kidney to get there
It was a Short Sandringham Flying boat, not a Catalina, they were too small.
Mobile phones have crappy autofocus
The byline clearly states "Stunning Lord Howe Island"... which it sure is... landing" etc. Or maybe you saw that anyway?
When I was on radiance of the sea in 2011 coming back from New Zealand we stopped there briefly to transport a sick person ashore, it was a very grey day, the island sort of loomed out of the mist, a very impressive sight.
I tripped there on the Catalina flying boat in the early Seventies with our scouting group from Melbourne, taking off from Rose Bay in Sydney and landing on The Lagoon there. Nothing but fond memories.......
That place is amazing, indeed!😮 The video going in and out of focus is hard on the eyes, and difficult to watch. Just saying.
Sunderland flying boat Rose Bay to LHI, 1951. I was 12. Captain invited me onto flight deck - WOW!
“Told in Stone”………….wasn’t that a song by E. L. O. ?
STUNNING?? What in hell was "stunning" about a normal aircraft landing??
The prop is spinning too slow 😂😂😂😂
What does one do there? I know it's a wildlife sanctuary.
At 2:20, that's a blown volcano.
I remember flying there in a flying boat from Rosebay in early 1960 wonderful island
Cessna 208B Grand Caravan, in fact. ???
love to go there but flights by themselves are expensive ><
Indeed - I looked for a flight a few months in advance and was quoted 1300AUD return! For that price I could fly to Asia or Fiji etc.
Amazing that the plane stays in the air when props are rotating so slowly! Good design😂
They are spinning a lot faster than it looks..its the video speed.
Ha ha, that has something to do with camera capture speed "matching" rotation of propellers...not the first time I've seen this pop up.
Uhhh, the essence of planespotting is to see DIFFERENT planes, not fifty clips of the same one LOL .
I found this video unintentionally hilarious. I could never have been a real pilot, for many reasons, and so I consoled myself with being a pretend pilot on Microsoft Flight Simulator. Now I have done literally hundreds of landings of dash-8s on YLHI, and hilariously (well to me), everything in this landing looked so "familiar"! LOL
That strobing propeller is a little scary LOL .
The Australian Army constructed the airstrip in the 1970s.
...always will hold a special place in our hearts! We were there just a few days after HMS Nottingham hit Wolf Rock; and we signed the museum visitor book on the same page as the commanding officer of that vessel.
Brings back great memories from 1960 when I first went there from Rose Bay (Sydney) on the Ansett Flying Boat (Catalina). Thank you for posting.
Oh I love Catalinas...never been in one but a huge fan...they look fantastic 😊my mother/ aunt recalled them landing on the Swan River in Perth during WW2
@@NaturaBreeze I have a photo of the Catalina at Lord Howe Island, but I don't know how to send it to you.
I remember the same, I was about 5 I think.
I was born a little later, but as a kid I built the Catalina model
I believe it was the Sunderlands that were used by Ansett ..they were renamed Sandringhams ..they were discontinued in 1974
I have very fond memories of arriving in a flying boat back in 1971. Even then, there was talk of an airport. I found my first love there, too, but back in Sydney, with no driver’s licence and living suburbs apart, it didn’t work.
Really great views. Thanks for sharing! 😊
I wonder which company will take over the Sydney - Lord Howe route when QLink dispose of the last -200 & -300 Dash 8s Unfortunately needs a runway extension for the Dash 400 to be viable, be nice to continue onto Norfolk Is. return to Sydney or Brisbane
Spectacular approach to the airport, thanks. 🇦🇺
It's a great island. The last time I was there it was a grass runway and landed in a King Air that was skidding almost off the runway from a cross wind. Broke my arm body surfing at Ned's on the second day. At least I got a nice sponge bath from the nurse at the local hospital.
Well..... I guess that counts as a good memory 😂
Wonderful scenery on the approach
Do they have a lot of fresh water on the island? I dont remember seeing a reservoir on ground or on mt's?
desalination planr
God this is so old and shit
This is a MUST do…
I need to visit that island!
I just checked my logbook and that was me flying QF2262/3 in VH-TQX on the 1st December 2022 👍
Very cool! Thanks for dropping in and commenting. Glad I was able to capture your arrival and departure in the video. It was my first time visiting and I found the whole QantasLink operation there fascinating - from the tight weight restrictions to hairy approaches due to weather. It was a spotter's dream.
I wonder how big God fitzy is going a funny character
Whos here in 2023?
12 years later nothings changed.
Im glad im from west aus
Dash-8....the mighty mosquito 😑✊️
Superbe vidéo, merci 🙏
Can't believe this lot have their own bank lol
Bogan dero central lol
Loose units
beautiful place! runaway is too short, and dash 8 takeoff on half!
Where is this island 🏝️?
Hi there! Lord Howe Island is about 700km from Sydney, the flight takes about 2 hours or so.
Belongs to the mighty State of New South Wales!
A environ 600 km à l’Est de Sydney dans la mer de Tasman.
Thank you👏👏👍👍
It's due east of Port Macquarie on the NSW coast. So about 500kms east, 250kms north of Sydney.
Beautiful terrain and beautiful takeoffs+landings.
It's such a unique and stunning destination, and a really cool place to do some plane spotting 😊
Nice video mate
Thank you!
Nice capturing 😍 View is amazing 👏
Thank you for the feedback 🙌 it's such a cool airport to watch planes. Shame about the wind noise, will have to get a mic with a windshield at some point.
Loved this segment on the Footy Show! The Woke Brigade have stopped this humour… pity.
The Woke Brigade? You're just a sook mate.....society matures and Sam just became an offensive dinosaur. I'm betting you watch Sky News.....the biggest snowflake sooks on TV.
Sam is the best
