Making Our Own Norton Model 18 Parts
Welcome to a brand new Andover Classic Motorcycle Workshop video. This time we’re taking a look at this beautiful Model 18 Norton that came in to us for a re-commission.
So from day one we knew this wasn’t going to be a simple service and the bikes back on the road. It was missing parts that no longer exist as well as other jobs.
We got the bike on the ramp to find that on the fuel tank the right hand side tap was leaking so fixed that issue quickly by tightening the washers and totally replacing the fibre seal.
We also checked the old battery which wouldn’t re-charge so we replaced this with a brand new one.
After few other easier fixes we delved deeper into the bike. We found when we removed the carb that the mono bloc housing was cracked and split, and also the float and needle wern’t locating correctly. Sadly the part is now discontinued by Burlen so we found something as close as possible to the original spec and made this work for the bike.
When it came to the oil pipes we actually found a number of these where missing completely and we spent our time painstakingly creating these ourselves to fit the bike, and then had to also remove a perished t connector and replace that.
The gearbox adjuster rod was loose and had worn locating pin holes making it hard to find first gear so rather than trying to replace anything we adjusted it and refitted the rod and pin adjustments which meant the rider could now select all the gears……which is handy.
We gave the bike a quick test but found the clutch was really grabbing so on investigation we found a number of foreign parts throwing the alignment out. We had to re set the clutch with parts.
The bikes gone back to the owner and he’s happy to have a safe and running bike again, all be it with a list of other jobs he will need to chat to other suppliers about, like the speedo only working in reverse.
As always, if you’re struggling with anything on your classic motorcycle, please do get in touch. We work on all bikes, specialising in work on and parts for the Nortons and triumphs so hopefully we can help you.
Until next time, safe riding.
The Andover Classic Motorcycle Workshop team is proud to offer full service for your Classic Bike. Our team has over 40 years of experience with motorcycles and we have all the original parts available directly, as we are also operating the world's largest Norton spare parts shop.

Sometimes The Easiest Jobs Take The Longest - Triumph Street Scrambler
มุมมอง 466หลายเดือนก่อน
The Triumph Scrambler 900 modern retro may carry a name associated with off-road riding, however this is far more an urban scrambler than a true off-road bike and while it can handle the odd gravel path thanks to its 19-inch front wheel, that’s about your limit. Although not as popular as the Street Twin, the Street Scrambler is a really cool bike that makes for a wonderful retro urban adventur...

This is the commando 750 hi-rider, there’s not many of these around the world, in fact only about 50 or so of them where ever sold before the rest where converted into roadsters to get them sold. It has a 9 litre tank with a huge one man one hobbit seat with the sissy bar on the back, it’s fantastically finished off with the ape hanger handlebars. This particular bike was brought in for quite a...

Wow those top triple clamps are a dead ringer for the triple clamps on my 49 matchless G80 , the Teledraulic , I hope they have something better inside than cone and shuttle dampening , are these the roadholder that norton copied AMC , I hope they have the damper tube/rod assembly. Cheers
Sounds like the owner used it as a REAL scrambler lol
Nice looking bike.
Piece of art, from the time that motorcycle were motorcycles, with a kickstarter and feeling from the rider.
Just got one question,i have had it since the 60's Why ,norton ???? What a hideous bike
Looks like a leg scorcher off road.
Marketing exercise that just didn't work. From the outset they looked daft and sold in numbers accordingly. Never actually seen one. NVT were I expect,. desperate by then. BSA Hurricane got the look right.....but still went down the pan unfortunately.
It's surprising how many we've seen out and about now this one has come into the workshop.
Lovely job
thank you, it took a lot of work
Hideous in the extreme
LOL, we thought it was quite an interesting one
Nice machine. However, this example is an early model (1967) and not a 'Ranger'. These were to be called 'Cheetah', but the name never really stuck and are usually simply referred to as 'P11'. The next version was called the P11A (1968) and later some were called P11A Ranger. The final version, which were nearly all titled as 1969 models (although built in late 1968) were called simply 'Ranger 750'. There are significant identifying differences in these three versions.
Saw one on the road back in the day, travelling into Blackpool and caught in traffic on a warm Summer day. Don't remember if it was a gnome or a hobbit on the back though. 😁😁
Did they have a bright red hat on
NVT's answer to the Raleigh Chopper!
You hit the nail on the head with that description :-)
I have 69 and love this bike . she now is in cafe trim & is a great street fighter😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Awesome, would love to see it
So the P11 got a $5000 turneup!
These British bikes from the 60s are really a reflection of the 30s Fantastic machines the BSA Firebird Scrambler of about the same year fantastic
Of course there is more work in the future to come it's in Norton.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Nice bike and one for the lounge at home during the winter months . 🤔
Imagine using a nice bike like this for OFF ROAD!! It has been mistreated by punks that should only be allowed to use bicycles!! 😣😣
🤯
Never seen this model before! So damn nice!!!
More popular now then then . Internet brought info to millions that didn't know it existed .
We agree
My buddy had one in the '80s, but we were riding Commandos and the P-11 was just for kicks.
They are lovely and great fun, this one probably had too much fun
Looks like brakes suck.
Disc brakes were still half a decade down the road
What a beautiful old British bike
It truly is, and safe now too
Should be ok when you've tuned the carbs.
Project 11 is a fabulous looker and this unit does not disappoint. This one is an exceptional example. Respect for the rebuilders and a little envy directed towards the owner. Very nice.....
it will be a good bike when you get it running right
Yep. It still could use a little timing/jetting solution. Almost there.
All sorted before going back to it's owner
left side looks way lean
Beautiful bike
It really is now it's back to safe and running
Beautiful, and rare. I worked at a Norton dealership in Los Angeles (Jack Baldwin's) when the P-11s were being superseded by the Commandos. My job was to pick up the crated bikes from the docks, wipe away the cosmoline and assemble them. Always wanted a P-11 though.....
Sounds like a great gig
It's quite beautiful
It really is now it's up and running again, and safe
I have had this happen in my shop many times. The worst are those with a shiny paint job sold to an unsuspecting buyer for a rather high price. Well done on this one.
thank you, a lot of hard work but the final result is totally worth it
Looks good.
thank you so much
In my umble opinion, The Norton P11 Ranger is one of the most desirable motorcycles I've ever seen.
they are something different and lovely to look at
I have never heard or seen one of these P11 s before was it a factory product?. What a good looking bike, the frame looks like a BSA unit. After seeing this, why oh why did the British motor cycle industry die on its feet?
@@davidclegg3554 I've seen and sat on one that was in ridable condition. I think they were made for the US market as a desert sled-type bike.
As a life long bike owner, it offends me to see soo many riders stamping on the gear pedal to engage first gear. I have never done it and see no reason for it.
How do you put the first gear? In time?
Each gearbox is to be treated with respect and caution. Easing first gear in without stamping or graunching should be the aim. Maybe I am old fashioned, but I don't care.
Well I'm not sure why, but he stamped on the footpeg, NOT the gear lever!!! Then at 3:52 he LIFTED the gear lever to put it into gear.........
@@frankibabi1agreed but this gb is 1 up, 3 down.
He’s a stamper
Who counts
the wife usually ...............
LOL
@@raymondo162Ha. We're not alone.
. . . apart from that it was in good nick!!!! What a fantastic job you've done. A beautiful beast of a machine.
Tis but a scratch
How much money did the guy spend fixing it up?
3 4 times what bike cost now , 10 times what it was new !
Looks and sounds amazing.
thank you, it certainly took some doing
Total respect for guy. I’m 75 and a grumpy old git and I’m fed up of all the two faced to****s around the country and on tv. Everybody loves Guy, our new hero. Just give him and his chimp space if you meet them.
Stunning bike but from what I remember they couldn’t measure the size if the Engine because it was a rotary…
that's correct, because it could be firing on all three sides at the same time, it's essentially why it was banned
Bloody antisocial engines!
They need to give Guy more respect he’s proved not to be just a truck mechanic from Lincolnshire, I think he will be a future Fred Dibnah character.
Beautiful
Love Guy Martin great to see him doing what he loves best thanks for sharing this 👍❤️
He was a top guy too, and so interested in learning about everything
Steve spray lived down bottom.of my road had a family garage called sprays
Good old sparking plug was mis firing. Rev Tune it my friend!!!
Can I ask why your concerned about the compression stroke when the Pazon is a wasted spark system?
My thoughts exactly.
Would love to have heard the conversation when Guy was on the bike revving it and talking nuts and bolts with the guys. thanks for this vid!!
He was just massively passionate about everything. Keen to learn on all the bikes on show
I 💗 A NICE WANKEL 😂
Don't we all
Come on, you're better than that!!!! lol
Hi, is possible translate to Spanish subtitles? Thanks
You can set the captions to auto translate to Spanish, we don't do perfect captions for our videos as yet
Love the bike ,rocket 3, and trident look good aswell 👌
there where some incredible bikes there this time
You have ruined it with the music pity.
We find it a bit dull having nothing when you're walking about and nobody saying anything, the music isn't on when the guys are talking about the NRS though so hopefully you where able to enjoy those two sections of the video
