Today I thought I would go back to 1984 and review a game that is not the biggest commercial success and to be honest I am not too sure if it's the best game. But it's fair to say that I was a big fan of the movies that this is game is based on and that game is The Evil Dead.
he Evil Dead is an adventure game produced by Palace Software for the Commodore 64, BBC Micro, and ZX Spectrum. Based on the 1981 horror film of the same name, it was the first officially licensed Evil Dead video game. While the Commodore 64 and BBC versions of The Evil Dead received a stand-alone release, the ZX Spectrum version didn't. It was released as the B-side to another Palace Software game called Cauldron and advertised as a "free game. So I wanted to start by looking at the ZX Spectrum version first.
Were these games any good? Let's find out!

I like the Movie references. Cinema heavily influenced 80s games
Classic game
Love this video. I played it on ZX Spectrum as a child but never got too far. Didn't know of the remakes and now I definitely want to play them!
Thanks 🙏
Шикарная игра, прекрасная музыка. Motoi Sakuraba навсегда в моем сердце
I had no idea Sega the company who owns Sonic has made Disney games makes sense because Sonic has made cameos and appearances in Disney movies
Brilliant video, i got 1 wrong on guessing the top 5 lol (ms pac man) , really enjoyed that, thanks
Thanks for watching 🙏
this game would be good as a graphic adventure.
Excellent and I was famous also (in my own head) as I co-wrote Armourdillo on the C64
Wow. I need to check out your game. Might even do a video on it.
@@retrogamerdiaries Its not brilliant but great times working with Giulio
The Evil Dead AKA Nicola Sturgeon lol 😂 sorry about that happy new year mate
Happy new year to you too 👍

Nice work you have done here!!! I didnt know a spectrum or an amstrad user back in the day who hadn't played harrier attack! Iconic early game from durell! Then sabouter 1,2....what can i say about them.....brilliant games!!! I think that the second one has the best title cpc music ever made although broken in your video for some emulator reason i guess... I wish you a happy new year!
Thanks for watching and a happy new year to you too 👍
KLAATU BARADA... COMMODORE 64 😹😸😺👍🕹️!
Amazing 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
That's a pretty fair review. 🙂 Despite the Spectrum's technical limitations, the programmers still managed to outdo the Sega Master System version in a couple of areas - the bonus levels are included - so too are the rear attacks by missiles and enemy aircraft. These were omitted on the Sega Master System, which is a way more powerful machine.
Thank you 🙏
BBC's Mineshaft = ZX Spectrum's Manic Miner.
Same idea I looked like yeah
Mike Richardson was an ace programmer
Cant get past you saying Trans form *A* tive instead of transform a tive and Heedy days instead of Heddy. WTF man? AhhhHHhh you were an Oric owner. Now I understand.
Perhaps my Scottish accent! Thanks for watching though. Nothing wrong with the Oric!
Comprehensive and accurate. Brought back lots of memories. Thank you!
Thanks 🙏
The Spectrum version of Critical Mass was surprisingly good relative to its other machine versions! C64 of course had better sound but the Spectrum was more detailed and smoother. Thanatos is similar in that it looks so much better on the Spectrum. Who knew we could get such large characters on our beloved Spectrums! In respect of Turbo Esprit, I used to just enjoy driving around, stopping at lights, and just chilling to whatever I was listening to on my Ghetto Blaster. I loved that the brake lights would come on when you, erm, brake lol :) I still think Turbo Esprit's natural successor wasn't GTA but Chase HQ.
The Guys also behind the Game Combat Lynx for the Spectrum.
I pre ordered both Lunar Jetman and Atic Atac. The latter was delayed so Ultimate sent me a UPTG baseball cap.
That’s pretty good. Do you still have it?
I wish I could find the background music they used in this. It's been stuck in my mind for years.
Great video. Would have preferred more info on Sabre Wulf but hey, can't have everything!
I am actually thinking about doing a video on all the Sabre Wulf games. Thanks for watching the video. Appreciated
Really good informative video i really enjoyed it .I'm a big fan of the the games and Matthew apparently he lives not far from me in the Wirral .
Thank you 🙏
Loved this game <3 <3
My favourite game at the time. Those damned Octopus and that floating spiky urchin thing though……
Great fun game, I had the cartridge for the ZX-Interface 2 !
Wow. I bet that is worth something today
Wait a minute i think i know this game
Pissed was a Awesome Game
My Scottish accent
😂
Mega cd best looking console ever 👍🏻
I agree and I have quite a good Mega CD collection also.
@ I wish I held on to mine along with the Amiga nes jaguar saturn Dreamcast lol ..list goes on . Nice channel btw I’ll be watching when I get the time .
Zilog z20 lol
Great work and very in-depth look at one of my favourite companies. Love to see one on Elite (Airwolf, Dukes of Hazzard etc)
Thank you for watching. Great idea about Elite. Leave it with me
Great video! It must've been a huge amount of work, researching and editing this. Many thanks for the hard work.
Thank you for watching my video. I did take some time to pull together but it was fun to do too.
The Donkey Kong series of games are timeless retro classics
Sure are
Thank you for doing this, I moved to America and this video brought back so many memories of my life in the UK. I've just received my "The Spectrum" from Amazon - I'm so thankful to be part of what video gaming is today and that I personally saw this evolution. The early days were really rather magical, a distinct part of my childhood.
Thank you for your good comment. Enjoy your Spectrum. It will surely bring back nostalgia memories.
It took me a bit to notice but the song in the background is stairway to heaven
I like the Class of '99 better than the 2018 version.
I liked both but the 99 version felt closer to the original version
This isn't an accurate list. More useless s w i l l.
Great video. What an exhaustive list. I had no idea that there were so many ports of this game. The NEC PC 6001 port was a real shock to me. I like how the developer completely abandoned graphics for decent playability. The algorithm mysteriously brought this video to me now. Definitely Liked and Subscribed.
Thank you for watching my video and great that you subscribed 🙏
Now that's serious value for money!😊
Ahem, 27 minutes into the film, an Amstrad CPC is shown. The year this scene is set in is 1980, the year the Acorn Atom appeared on the market. Amstrad CPC computers hit the market three years later in 1984.
Fair comment
Hell even earlier than that, when Clive and Chris are in the pub in 1978, there’s a Tempest arcade machine that wasn’t even in US arcades until 1981.
I loved this game, I'm fairly sure it must've been on the SNES that I played. I hadn't even realised there was a Master System version!
That Genesis and SNES versions were much better but I was always impressed that the 8-bit version was as good as it was.
A near 2 hour retrospect?? Sign me in!! 👊
Thank you. It’s one of my earlier videos.
@@retrogamerdiaries Just finished it, superb job bro 👊, feel proud of what you did with this.
Populus the game that started it all. While PC to console is the norm now, back then it wasnt and one of the reasons the master system maintained dominance of the british/european market was SEGA managed to get ports of hit games on the PC of the day, known as the amiga thanks to having the same british developers or publishers that were behind those amiga games . Shadow of the beast, SpeedBall, Lemmings and Prince of Persia were the earliest examples of a PC to console pipeline. Not enough is looked into this aspect because everything is viewed by american eyes and the master system wasnt popular over there. Ignoring the fact that the UK is historically the worlds third biggest games market and what happened there ended up having an impact on the american and japanese markets. SEGA tried to do this pipeline themselves with the saturn by creating segasoft which was a PC games developer and publisher. That also prompted SEGA japan to start producing PC exclusives o certain saturn games on windows in japan which started SEGA's path as a pc publisher and developer. The saturn failed as did segasoft but the idea continued with the Dreamcast in having its own PC to console pipeline which unfortunately a lot of the games didnt come out after the DC was discontinued. But that of course inspired bill gates to do his PC console aka the X box and rest is history. But it all started on the master system or should i say SUCCESFULLY on the master system. So i am glad you shone a light with one of the games that was part of that.
Great comment and thank you for this 👌
What a shit commercial. Lol. Why the hell is he wearing a crown of thorns at the end?
Top tip: Set the tax rate as low as possible while you build, to encourage growth. Then, just before the budget, put the tax as high as possible. Nobody will have time to leave, so youll take a fortune. Then put it back down again for the next year. (Can I be Chancellor of the Exchequer now?)
I need to try that! Good tip. Thanks
Great game, and a lovely conversion. (Was the music in the game, or did you add it?)
I added the music. The master system had no music so I added music from Populous A New World. I think the video would have been boring without some music. Just me perhaps
I never understood it when I rented it as a kid. I have now in my collection but not been back to it. I know a few people who absolutely love this version and at least one who has completed all 5000 levels.
Worth a try!
I never understood how to play this game. I have the instructions but I don't have the courage to learn how to play it. I find it ugly but it's impressive that the Master system manages to manage all the parameters because there are many of them.
It takes a little bit of time to get into but it’s quite enjoyable once you grasp the controls on that Master System pad.
What a fantastic video. I wish I had your confidence buddy. Extremely informative and delivered really well. Its absolutely brilliant to see master system content still being put out there. I still haven't actually played this game much so must get around to it but a couple of my mates have and love it. Keep up the great work with these fantastic videos
Thanks for watching. Your videos are really good too mate. Watched 3 of your latest videos this morning while going to work. Enjoyed your Street Fighter one with all those hacks. I think you must be the master when it comes to the Master System. Brilliant and an inspiration for my videos. Big fan mate.
🙏
