This is the right way to play the main version but not how Elliot played the acoustic version. I like both ways. This way is a little more intricate.

very cool. the reason why the guitar part is tricky as hell is the rhythm. It goes against the piano notes, meaning that the key notes of the phrases are rarely on the downbeat. Those who struggle with the studio version - start with the simpler 1999 acoustic version (with a great tutorial from Tasteinmusic). That's the Acoustic b-side and how Elliott played it in 1999 before embellishing it even further as seen here. It would give you a much clearer idea of the chords used thus allowing you to concentrate on the fingerpicking aspect only.
