@@richardkudrna7503 Usually every 14 months. - Will include a check inside the boiler with a camera, inspection of thread and general condition followed by seeing the engine in steam to witness the safe operation of the boiler and ancillaries. Long ago I had a boss who was a formally trained British steam engineer. A few things I remember are very interesting. One was how pressure relief valves were improved to have two spring settings, the safety pressure and then a lower pressure to allow regular cycling of the valve so it wouldn’t stick. Another was two pressure gauges instead of just one. Then passive safety. Example was Stanley steamer. By using softer metal on some rivets then increasing their diameter and orienting down, the rivets might deform and eject down before bursting the boiler.

Another interesting thing he told me was about the steel. How “boiler plate” came about. In the early days of mine pump steam engines, steel mills would make steel plates but not control the amount of graphite. They would roll or hammer the steel plate so it had at least some ductility, but some would have too much graphite and be brittle. When these had their rivet holes punched, micro cracks would form leading to burst boilers. As metallurgy matured, standards came about and “boiler plate” with known strength, ductility, and proscribed mill rolled grain flow direction became standard and boiler safety greatly improved. Elasticity or strain to rupture is a key attribute.

Another 45 years ago lecture was about water conditioning. How chemical additives became available to slow corrosion. Additives to set slight alkaline (too acid or to alkaline eats the metal), then the almost magical sodium silicate that deposited a thin layer of glass like material onto the wet surfaces actually preventing the water from even touching the steel.

Still more trivia!! Proof and burst testing concepts came from cannon and boiler knowledge. At a certain point it was decided to proof test guns and boilers at a pressure value well above service. Say 1.25 to 2.5x service pressure. Deformation was sometimes allowed or not allowed. Then came the use of burst testing to show a design was good, not just quality. So boilers and guns were deliberately over pressured to burst. But, in time, incoherence was observed. Fatigue understanding increased and this explained why failure was happening soon after a repeated proof or “reproof” test. Some cannons now had a required “round count” or “equivalent full charge ledger” kept as fatigue concepts became understood. Engineers could now predict a pressure cycle life and metallurgists could cut and etch a piece of meta and point to grain separation due fatigue. For pressure vessels, bulge with advancing fatigue was observed. In some cases, measurements of girth change with pressure could estimate state of fatigue.
