So you want to play Mono-Blue Terror... | Beginner's Guide to Pauper
Welcome back to "The Beginner's Guide to Pauper". This series is meant to be the absolute best starting point for a new Pauper player - it's what I would've wanted when I started playing. In each video, I'll cover a different deck in the Magic: the Gathering Pauper format, the common man's format of Common cards. Each video includes a detailed deck tech and other useful resources to get started. Today's video covers Mono-Blue Terror, a Tempo deck with a balance of aggressive and controlling tools.

Happy New Year, Pauper players! In today's video, we're bringing Mono-Black Devotion to a Pauper League. This is an old school deck that used to be a powerhouse in the format. It aims to play a controlling game plan while simultaneously developing permanents to the board with black pips in their mana cost. Great content 👌 much, much better than pfp hate tirades.
@@DonDee123 I usually leave those conversations to people smarter than me. I just wanna play the game :)
A few months ago, I think pre MH3, most lists did run Snap over Boomerang. Why did they make the switch when both cards were part of the pauper meta for a long time? Why now, and what is the advantage of one over the other?
Unfortunately, that's kind of a blind spot for me. I first got into Pauper about a year ago, and when MH3 came out, I wasn't super knowledgeable about the meta. I think the main value of Boomerang over Snap is hitting lands. What's strange is that hitting lands was stronger pre-MH3 when people played more bounce lands (Azorius Chancery, Boros Garrison, etc.) So if Terror decks made the switch, I don't know why it happened then. Snap still gets played in Faerie decks, where speed is of the utmost importance - you want to be able to bounce a Flying or Reach threat, get in with your Faerie, play a Ninja, and maybe even have Counterspell open after that. For Blue Terror, I guess there's a little less urgency to do things at the very beginning of the game as with Faeries, so the mana rebate from Snap is a little less important. But that's just my best guess - maybe someone else can chime in to help answer.
Wow amazing video!!
@@albertorozco3652 Thanks, Alberto! :)

Hyped that you're doing this deck guide. Probably my second favorite deck, just below Dimir Faeries. Would love to see you cover that. Though, I have a gut feeling that Mono-Red is up next haha. Excited for more in this series!
@@paragrog I think I'm gonna prioritize these based on play rate, so Red and Glee are probably coming up soon. Not sure after that, but I've got a running list of requests! Thanks for watching :)
Literally just started playing Terror last week! Perfect! Loving this series
Let's go - let me know if you have any questions! How are you liking it?
@@RoyceCCG Loving it! I think I need a bit more practice with it as I went 1-3 at my most recent tournament with it but I enjoyed every game so that's good! I'm an affinity player so dipping my toes into Terror took a bit of getting used to! How do you think it pairs against the current meta? Especially Mono U Faeries?
@HonkLord Search up the video "Pauper Matchup Analysis - Duskmourne Edition" by Kirblinxy on TH-cam. He's got all the matchup stats listed out. I think Fae wins because of its speed, go-wide ability, and flying creatures. It's not always able to completely stop snakes from coming down, but it can chump block pretty effectively for long enough to win. Artful Dodge probably helps that matchup.
i like "toxin analisys" to use with wiches and rats.
@@Lucas92791 Tbh I never noticed the Toxin/Witches synergy! I'll keep that one in mind for the future - thanks :)
Hi, nice mbc video. Its my favourite deck. Hugs from Brazil.
@@gabrielmeira5424 Thanks Gabriel, glad you enjoyed!
As a new player, I'd also love to see a quick sideboard guide:)
Quick sideboard guide below: Got it, will include in the future! FYI, this is a simplified and possibly subjective overview. You can check my personal deck list in the description for a complete round-up. Hydroblast/Blue Elemental Blast is usually the top priority against Kuldotha - you probably need 4-5, especially if you're playing online. Pyroblast/Red Elemental Blast is also very strong - you probably want 3-5 of these vs. Terror and Faeries, primarily. (7-10 total slots.) After that, there's a little drop-off. A lot of folks go deeper into Krark-Clan Shaman and Toxin Analysis with the final copy of KCS and 1-2 Toxin in the sideboard. (1-3 total slots.) I really like playing some kind of additional sweeper to clean up flyers and provide some redundancy with KCS. Electrickery and End the Festivities are okay if you're only worried about Faeries, but I prefer Breath Weapon for flexibility. (0-3 slots.) You can play some more removal, especially if you're light on it in the main deck. I like Cast Down for flexibility (Instant speed is important against Broodscale), but Extract a Confession comes in handy against a few cards (Tolarian Terror, Guardian of the Guild-Pact, Bogles). (0-3 slots.) You can also play some kind of negation, mostly to protect against Dust to Dust from White decks. I've seen players use Negate, Turn Aside, or Metallic Rebuke. (0-3 slots.) You can also play some Artifact hate for the mirror. I'd go with either Cast Into the Fire (since the ping mode can help against Fae) or Gorilla Shaman (for high impact.) (0-3 slots.)
Oh god, this video found me just as I was pondering if I should go into Pauper. I'm really excited to see what's coming next!
I hope it helps! I added a sideboard guide as a reply to your other comment btw :)

Hey, great video. I think it would be very advantageous for new players if you included a matchups section in the video. What the deck is good against, what it struggles against.
@@omegaduckie I'll see what I can do! I'm a little worried about spreading misinformation or representing my own feelings on matchups as fact, but I'll see if I can find a resource that aggregates them.

@@chenyanai8983 Thanks!
I like how you mentioned on my video where I said that "a beginner's guide to pauper" was needed in the TH-cam space and you had this already in the works (If you made this within the week then you are a wizard). Editing was what I wished my videos would be like. Couple of things I would have liked: A whole deck image at some point - It felt just random cards being thrown at me and I'd already forgotten what other cards were in the deck by the time the 3rd card was shown to me. Sideboard Options - Just show a generic sideboard or show particular cards for the most common matchups. This is what most people look for with these kinds of guides I have found. If you aren't confident on actual sideboard plans that's fine, just general cards for general matchups (like Pyro, Hydro etc.) you don't have to mention what to take out.
Yep, I was already almost done with the video when you posted yours, haha. Just a funny coincidence. Good call on the deck list and sideboard options! I'll definitely get those included for the next vid.
Love this new series! If i can add or suggestion something.. perhaps u can share with the new players on some of the popular sideboard cards? I think most fairly new players tend to struggled alot when it comes to sideboarding. 😊 Its just a suggestion! Understand that its alot of work to write, record and edit these videos already. So kudos to u man!

@@HarborMastr I can relate to that! I partially got the idea after bringing my battle box to Christmas with the in-laws and seeing the kind of information they needed to know first-hand. Altar Tron will be further down the list since I've never played it, but I'll put in a vote for Kuldotha!

I'm actually currently building a gray merchant pauper deck, though. Good guess. Lol.
It's a sweet deck! I hope you like it :D
I'm playing quite a bit of off beat cards in it. But pestilence, for sure.
you should also play 4 trolls of khazad dum and 4 exhume, the combo when starting with turn 1 swampcycle and turn 2 exhume is just too good to be left out of a mono black imho :)
@@wanderingdoggo Cool idea! If you go for this, I'd probably cut a tap land or two to increase your chance of starting with a basic Swamp.
I personally love Wildfire as a card, but I think this deck can't perform in this historical moment without Deadly Dispute... Going all in with artifact lands exposes you to all the collateral hate from all the side cards against affinity, and you can't even run post sideboard counters for that, because of our colors, and except for wildire and a better overall situation with the Mouse, Metalcraft and Munitions, you don't get too many advantages. + I think not having Dispute in such an artifact packed deck is a missed opportunity. By the way, great gameplay as always, and I would love to see even more Mardu action from you in the future, even though it would mean a third video on it :D
@@marcoceredi80 Yeah, I think if I post another video on the deck, it will be more in the Boros Synth, low-to-the-ground style, with fewer tap lands and, as you mentioned, Deadly Dispute. Thanks for your support and very insightful comment :)
Feels to me like, when playing against Grixis Affinity, you should always use removal when oppo is tapped out
Yeah, I do my best. Sometimes, you just have to point your removal and pray, haha.
Really enjoy your videos. Thanks for the post
Just the video that I needed today!! ❤
@@coborodrii Let's go! Have fun :)
Ahá! The most handsome Pauper players is back! I'm about to be back too, but this end/beginning of year was really full of things for me, and made me kinda lazy XD Also, nice to see MBC again, I guess the deck is bad against Affinity(unless you answer well the Fountains), but with a okayish hand you can go over the top of Glee and Mono Red, and U Faes with Cuombajj, Rats and good blockers for Ninjas the matchup can be easy, thou some of the midrange similar to Affinity are all bad matchups too. But MBC need some love and can make some results :B
Yeah, I felt like Faeries would be pretty doable if I ever ran into them. Mono-Red seemed...fine? Maybe a Tendrils of Corruption or something would come in handy vs. that deck...

Woohoo, let's go, Antonio! Here's to an awesome 2025.
@@RoyceCCG heck yeah man! Thanks for all the good pauper videos, your gruul chrysalis video is what finally got me into the format!
@@antonioarrendol2655 That's awesome, Pauper evangelism is my number one goal in making these, haha.
Keeping g3 vs mono R in match 1 with no white source and two tapped lands was a super sus keep. No sideboard cards in hand anyways, this hand is 100% a mull
I have been resistant to building ub control because i play it in edh, pioneer, and ive been working with it in pdh, but i think its time to give it a go in this meta. Good content! Always love to see more pauper content
@@BulkBoxBandit That makes sense, I'm also a big fan of variety. If it helps, there are a lot of different Dimir techs available in Pauper. There's Augur of Bolas, Fallaji Archaeologist, Crawl into the Cellar, Sneaky Snacker, Thorn of the Black Rose...plenty of directions to go!
@RoyceCCG yeah in going to explore a few different builds and see what happens. I've been playing gardens forever, now jund gardens with crys but I do agree, it's everywhere.
The fact that there are a bunch of jund decks and other decks splashing to use chrysalis shows how busted the card is and honestly it makes pauper too uniform. It needs to go.
@@joaomarcoscassiano5330 Yeahhhh, that's the direction I'm leaning, too. It's always tough when a card doesn't do any one thing in a particularly broken way but culminates into something that may be overall too powerful for a format. I wonder if opinions on Chrysalis would differ based on how frequently you play the format. It seems like those grinding a bunch of games are especially sick of it because it's just so ubiquitous.
I just moved and my new shops meta is mostly this deck. There also green tron, madness, faeries, and elves. Been having a tough time with MonoBlue Terror and Dredge. Do you think switching the Terror to the Dimir build would improve my winrate? Or should I stick with Dredge and maybe cut the Rays in the board for Snuff Outs? I’ve also got everything for Jeskai Ephemerate but it probably takes even more reps to learn that and it doesn’t seem like it’s well positioned
@@MetalCoreHog131 Hey, good question! I don't have the data in front of me or anything, but intuitively, I'd rather play Dimir than Mono Blue against all of those matchups except maybe Green Tron. For Dredge, I think it all comes down to your average clock and whether you can win faster than Madness, Fae, and Elves. Snuff Out will definitely help against more of the meta than Ray of Revelation would, but maybe you could find a way to keep both if anyone plays Bogles.
Happy holidays to you, Royce! Glad to have you in the Pauper scene.
@@paragrog Thanks, Para! Happy holidays to you, too :)
Mono blue is boring
I think snuff out is a must in this meta with my broodscale combo running around
@@colinsickels8013 Do you think we play enough Swamps and ways to access Swamp?
@ I think if you run cleansing wildfire, you can search it up, if no navigator’s compass TURNS any land into a swamp, so you can bluff super hard that you don’t have it
@@RoyceCCGnot as is but it might be worth skewing either the manabase or the strategy of the deck
Commentary is excellent, I'm enjoying your content! Only constructive criticism on the gameplay is that you delayed deployment of your Fireweaver too long when early deployment would have helped you end the game much sooner. This list is intended to be more proactive in that sense, but you played it like the durdly Grixis version. At the worst the Fireweaver eats a bolt and you "gain" 3 life. At best you crank a lot of damage on your opponent and convert your card advantage engines into putting opponent on the back foot. Instead you prioritized drawing more cards when you already had your lands and you had more cards than you could deploy. Card draw to refill and reload makes most sense when you're out of cards. Keep up the great narrative commentary and gameplay, love it
@@RyantheGumby That makes sense. Would you go as far as playing Fireweaver on 2 before Wellspring (assuming I have my land drops planned out)? Also, I appreciate it about the analysis! I've been trying to improve this year by putting most of my attention into good micro decision-making. Something I want to think about for next year is improving my macro, and I think the Fireweaver situation is a good example of that.
Great vid! So glad to see this deck back in action! Would definitely love to see the jund affinity list sometime! 👀 👀
Thank you! Spoilers, but I have a video coming out next week with some decks I'd like to try early next year 👀 Whether or not Jund Affinity made it onto that list, I'll probably give it a look now that I've seen all the interest in the comments.
28:43 I couldn’t agree with this sentiment more. Mtgo is constantly testing my ocd.
