Quail are getting attacked. Aggressive breeding behavior!

Finding some of my hens were scalped and I was surprised to find out it was my rooster. Sometimes you just need to cull from the flock and make sure you keep the ones that will workout best. An overly aggressive animal has no place on our property. There are plenty of roosters here to replace him. I really hope that some of this helps others. This feeder actually works and is very low profile. Takes up zero space inside my cage. I thought the gap was too narrow but it actually might be just enough. Quail figure it out very fast. #quail #quailfarming #selfsufficiency #diy #poultry #poultryfarming #gamebird #coturnixquail #japanesequail

We will get a little more in depth on that setup as well. Always some learning to be done over here. I’ll figure it out some day. Hope you all are doing well!!
How we get our 30 day weights for goats. Weighing the bucklings. Kiko and Kiko/Boer cross.
มุมมอง 64ปีที่แล้ว
ADG is Average daily gain and most breeders hold this number in high regard. For the meat industry, we want goats that will put on weight fast and efficiently. The faster to 50-60 pounds the better. There are many factors that go into a kid's growth. The heaviest at birth does not always mean that it will remain the largest or grow to be large.

get the camera on a stand!!! you make it hard to watch the video with it on your head

How big was the holes for them to feed out of??
I wish I could remember. Smaller the better though. 1.5” seems about right.
How do you manage to get them to eat and drink? Also, when do they need food and water (like how much time do I give them), I’m trying to get them to drink by touching their beaks to the water and tap my finger in their food but no luck, any suggestions??????
Honestly I don’t dip beaks. They will figure it out. Once a poult or chick starts pecking at something the others follow. They are curious and figure it out. No need to force it. They can go days with no food or water after hatching.
Anyway, if it was too dry your air sacks would be too big, and it's not the case...

I had a few quails that had pretty bad head injuries , I thought we might need to put them down but I wanted to try to save them In case. I cleaned the wounds and applied raw unpasteurized honey on their wounds daily kept it clean washed then reapplied more honey and they healed really well.
The scalped girls will make a comeback MOST of the time with isolation for a few days (so no one else will pick on their injuries) AND with application of Vetericyn spray 2X/day. Yes… always remove a roo that’s that aggressive and destructive.
I know one of the best reasons to give a dust bath, aside from helping the quail have that nice, smooth, well-kept look, is that it's one of the very few forms of fun they seem to have as birds. I have a litter setup in my cages (I use dirt from the back yard, which is the very fine, sandy-clay kind of stuff and just scoop it out with a mesh scooper) and I can tell you the instant I bring in fresh dirt for them, or even just start cleaning the dirt in there already, they throw themselves at it and just start grinding into it. It's sometimes rather annoying, though, because as skittish as they are, all inhibitions go out the door and I'll end up having to physically push them out of the way while I am cleaning because they're just so obsessed with the fresh dirt.
i have a tuxedo italian i thought was female i was wrong lol put with the others iv way to many males all in one hutch no fights luckily.
Pull the Male, clean the cage build up a bigger flock of girls put in a new male.put the old male into a established bigger flock he doesn't know .
You look like me trying to figure out if hens roos. Thank God I only have two whites and im confident they are both hens. I have a roo that crows all day and that cage has not layed any eggs. I think he stressing the hens. My roos all started crowing while looking at your video. Lol!
One in a while I’ll get a real bully for a rooster, never with my browns but definitely my white now and again. I’m not sure why but more so a White Rooster can really go for the eyes. I’ll watch them and pull him out and move on. Also definitely agree with the ability to tell the gender’s too, not as convenient as brown’s.
I have never heard quail make those noises, they sound almost like doves. Birds are such strange animals.
This looks like a really great scale I’m thinking about getting one for weighing all my scrap copper wire and non ferris metal
It’s a very good purchase. I use it to weigh myself. But can be used for many purposes. Livestock obviously. But good for weighing antler sheds, bulk items, etc. very accurate scale.
Hey my baby goat keeps crying and sounds like she is sick how do I know if she is dying are sick she is 3 months old
Hope you have some vitamins on hand. Vitamin b-12. Check eyes for color. Make sure they are red/pink and not white on inner eyelids. If so she is anemic and requires deworming. And best to hurry.
Now that you've been using it, how is it working? Is the 1/4" space for the food enough room? Great video, thanks for posting.
I would say my opening was too small. I sold it all and relocating as we speak so no updates. But I would have opened it up a tad more. Maybe 1/8”.
@@ThisNorthernLife, thanks for the quick response. So you're saying, more like 3/8"long? Also, may I ask, what length staples you use? Good luck with your relocation, will you still have Quail and will you be doing more videos? I hope so, just found your channel. Thanks again.
@@jeannienutter3015 as soon as I get settled in I may. Depends on a lot of factors. Not trying to rush into anything. But no, 3/8” is plenty probably. You should be good to go. Depending on humidity. Just check the feed every now and then and make sure it isn’t sticky. I think I had 3/8” staples to 1/2”. That is the longest I could find when I was at the store.
what staple gun type thing did you use? its so tiny!
It is an arrow pt50 possibly. Very nice little gun. When you have a lot of staples to shoot this is lightweight and faster than a battery operated. Think you can purchase these at Walmart actually.
Another one that works well is a narrow crown stapler. They are a little pricey because it’s a pneumatic gun, but if you do crafts like this frequently, you’ll probably get some good use out of it. Roughly $140 for a DeWalt narrow crown stapler.
Yup. Ours too. And here I thought I had finally made my fence goat proof.
It’s usually the same culprits too. Learn as we go. We are now selling them all and relocating. Have to see what we get for property before we commit to doing this again. I’ll make sure to be 100% set up prior to acquiring more goats though.
Camera staying more still would benefit the video, for sure. Still interesting
I can only get better. Thanks for the advice. I’ll keep aiming for improvement. Thanks for watching!!
When a kid is going back an forth tit tit that meaning that mom not letting the milk come down so the kid only getting a little milk when the kid is full you will see the sides of the kid not sunk in. most of the time when a mom not letting a kid eat its best to milk mom your self and give the kid a bottle that way you know how much milk the kid is getting. I could see when you put the camera close that the kid was not getting milk lips so mom was stopping the milk from getting to her tits . it don't mater what mom you put on the stand that goat will do the same and stop the milk her knows that not her kid so she not going to feed it
Love that you let nature do its thing.
Thank you for showing the birth of the goats but you have to learn how to make a video from other farmers. Please learn to focus the camera to film the mama goat and her kids. By Moving it around, you don’t accomplish anything. Thank you again.
Well….. something is accomplished. It’s all on how you look at it. Thanks for watching!
@@ThisNorthernLife lol I agree with you! It always amazes me what some folks have the nerve to say. You are sharing, FOR FREE, a successful goat birth...and get complaints and told to do a better job next time! I appreciate the video and hope to see lots more from your homestead. ❤🙏🏻🇺🇸
Geesh! Maybe you should show all the great editing and filming examples on your own channel. Oh wait...🤔🙄
@@mllee2008 I do need to work on my camera skills. I also have a baby in my arms a lot of the times. And this stuff kinda happens on the fly. I definitely do not beat myself up over the criticism. I am thankful for any interaction. You are right, I do not make a dime and I probably never will. I don’t intend to make the bank from the channel. Only here to help. If it blows up then that is ok as well. Everyone is welcome to like or hate. I come from a place where everyone should be able to say anything they want. It’s how one perceives it, and up to that person to process it correctly and hopefully in the best way. I do appreciate your kind words !!
I'm attempting the dry hatch as we speak. My problem is the only place I have to set my incubator is my kitchen. I'm finding I can't hold the humidity due to my concrete countertops. The temp is fine but any suggestions for raising the humidity a bit? Right now I'm spending all day dampening a towel and laying it over the incubator.
You said dry hatching? So you shouldn’t add any water. Let it be dry. I only add water the last 3 days. During the lockdown period. I think mine would be around 17-20% naturally without me adding any water. With the water method you’d want around 40-45%. So dry method. No water. Lockdown full water. Humidity should be 60-75% during lockdown. Worked for us anyways.
Great help video but if you have a spare passenger seat take the cushion or bottom piece and install it on the driver

flying your drone sideways like this you are number 1 in crashing it
Thanks. I can see that.
Dude the beeping
Yes. Incubator beeps. When it’s turning the trays and probably when drops below temp. The squeaking is what I am annoyed with. Unfortunately I cannot get up that high to lube the vents. I have to rent a lift. It’s about 20-24 feet up I think. And in the middle of shop so nothing to lean a ladder on. Lots of windy days lately.
Oh yeah wish I had one of them!!!!! I got the first comment!!!!!!!!
You are making me jealous!!!! cool video!!!!!
You got a drone yet?? We are in a restricted zone so it’s tricky learning the rules.
@@ThisNorthernLife no not in the budget this year, but I'm not in a restricted zone!!!
so cute and i love chasin you and morgan wallen in general
Why didn’t you put her in a barn
We will provide shelter but we do not usually force them to go into shelters. I am not sure which goat you are talking about.
@@ThisNorthernLife I’m talking about the girl that gave birth in the video I understand that you don’t want to force them into the shelter we put our go to the shelter before they go into labor because we have Nigerian dwarf goat and usually it’s an overnight birth and we have coyotes in our dogs chase the coyotes and then you go into the goat pen to get away from the dogs like they’ll jump in and go pan or something and eat baby goats twice so now we put them in the pans at night and when they are giving birth
@@addywalker477 I understand. We don’t have any predator problems here. We have a neighborhood that have people and routinely shoot them. So our biggest predator is just owls picking off our chickens. I routinely check our fence line and besides cats and skunks, we don’t have any canine coming under or over. We even set trail cams out and never see anything but skunks and cats.
So far we have never lost a goat to predator. We understand that our situation and location is different and expect that our methods of care will change if we relocate.
Do you have a video to build the first part?
That is all I have. The bottom portion is the same as top portion. The only difference is the height from floor. Angles and measurements are all the same.
I am sorry but that is not a Boer goat. Maybe a cross but not true Boer.
He is 87.5% registered with ABGA. Thanks for watching! You can probably look him up as SunFlower Farm Polar Express. Registration# 10865156
@@ThisNorthernLife The other 12.5% would be nubian? nice animal
@@Johanneskl66 I do not have any record of what the remaining percentage is. A lot of time with registration they only recognize the primary breed. Kikos for example are considered New Zealand (100%) kiko. Purebred(93.75%) kiko and anything under is cross. Unless a person had the goat born on their farm it is difficult to say. DNA can verify parentage as long as their dna is also on file.
@@ThisNorthernLife It is a nice looking animal and if his offspring is of good quality then that's what counts
I currently have few Kikos and a few Boers + some others and some mixes.. I am in the process of finding by myself works for me.. so far i notice Boers seems to be more scare of rain is that true with yours? Thank you
How is it going?- Like-really incredible drone~:))
So far so good. I haven’t crashed yet!
The spy balloons are 3 full school buses and that is not even close near the size as the spy balloons
Thanks. I wasn’t trying to fool anyone. It was a joke in light of the current events. So please…. Laugh
Those things r so dangerous for animals n the environment. Should be illegal 😤
I agree. And I feel like it probably is against the law. But probably hard to enforce that one. I get enough trash from around the area on windy days. I don’t need the extra. Haha
? What is this?
Just some balloon that finally decided to land. Somebody proposed to someone. I’m just wondering if they said “I do”.
