With her low freeboard this small ship should have stayed within harbours. It was a poor design for sailing on a sea. It seemed to have a spooky rather skeletal image, and it had a mysterious end.

I grew up along the beach south of Ludington. We have a portion of a ship’s wheel that was found by my relatives after the storm and have tried to determine if it was from the Minch or Davock.

In regards to the numerous mishaps aboard the Anna, perhaps it would have been easier for you to list the days that nothing happened. It seems like the Anna was cursed from the get-go given the crazy levels of danger. I wonder if the pay was commensurate to the degree of threat to life and ? Especially during the month of November

Hunters in the Midwest froze where they stood, if I remember correctly it was duck season.

It was fascinating learning that the same system which brought the Tacoma Narrows Bridge down went on to wreak such havoc on the lakes. Although it doesn't behave the same, the modern bridge looks enough like the fallen one as you drive across it, that it makes you think. I'd still rather cross it than the floating bridges; sea spray joining the rain on your windshield isn't cool. Thanks for the great content.

Considering the number of ships and lives lost over the years, there ought to be an official closed season on the Great Lakes. I have no doubt that the shipping companies would scream blue murder at lost revenue. Even more pertinently, the SCOTUS would invariably side with business over lives, shooting down any attempt at having an official sailing season of, say, April to October. That there is the issue that the USA needs to resolve: dollars always come before lives. 😢❤😢

Did they not have life boats or any flotation devices back then. It seems like they had a high rate of mortality. Im sure the cold would have killed many, even if they had life jackets on, but it sounds like the crews often sank with the ship and were never found.

The cases of apples stored on her deck give the inference she was top heavy in boiling seas.

The captains and pursers of these ships were under a lot of pressure to keep the pace and make money. If a voyage was delayed or cancelled their very jobs were on the line if they didn’t have a bullet proof reason. So sad!

The story of the Alpena and her captain, Nelson Napier, rates a deep dive. A paddle wheeler did not belong on that lake, ever. Even Napier reportedly said so.

You wouldn't think a side wheeler would do the best in a bad storm. I imagine the cargo shifted to one side and she toppled over.

The music you use to open your videos really sets the tone. I cant wait for the next one,great video. I believe there was a ship similar to the Alpena called The Wolverine. Its bow used to sit by the public dock in Erie PA. There's a story there, too, regarding the Wolverine

Ive looked up this paddler before, not a ton out there on it ( that my amateur self could find anyway). These videos are top tier in my opinion you deserve sooo many more subscribers!

2:21 that song unsettled me when i first heard it on another ship channel talking about ships lost on the great lakes. The dissonance creeps me out so much.

Interesting that 1 of the crew was from Pequaming Mi! Henry Ford had a mill there that supplied parts for his cars! You don’t hear that place mentioned very often!

I’m not sure how you missed it in the dozens of news articles, online posts, etc about it, but the Cleveco was not just “spotted floating upside down”….she was actually RAISED TO THE SURFACE in 1961….as was shown by news articles you even put in this video but obviously never bothered to read… and was supposed to be removed from the area and pumped out….but she sank again during another storm. They never tried raising the barge again, but they did finally pump the remaining oil out of her in 1995.

Certainly tragic with the men on the Clevco being in communication with potential rescuers and even glimpsing each other, but still completely alone when the time came.
